the dane community anaerobic digester

farm tour

Tuesday, September 24, 2013

11:45 a.m. – 2:45 p.m.

In conjunction with the 2013 WCA Annual Conference, join us for a unique opportunity to explore the Dane Community Anaerobic Digester. Built as a public-private investment to minimize the agricultural runoff in Dane County, the facility came online in April 2011 and is owned and operated by Clear Horizons, LLC. The digester is connected via pipeline to three local dairy farms that process 80 to 100 thousand gallons of manure a day. The plant ferments the manure for 28 days creating enough methane to drive two, 1 Megawatt gas reciprocating engines; this produces enough electricity to power over 2,000 homes. Similar to European plants that have been built over the last ten years and number in the thousands, these plants employ over a half a million people worldwide. Monte Lamer, director of biogas with Clear Horizons, will walk attendees through the plant sharing details of operating a successful plant, as well as talk about the challenges that face the American farmer and communities whose fresh water resources are being compromised by the run off of excess nutrients. A persistent problem this innovative digester program helps to curb in Dane County. The farm tour is brought to you free of charge, thanks in part to the generous support of the Professional Dairy Producers of Wisconsin. If you are interested in attending the tour on Tuesday, September 24, 2013 from 11:45 a.m. – 2:45 p.m., WCA must receive your RSVP no later than August 2, 2013 for you to be included. Space is limited. Registration will be on a first-come, first-served basis. The bus will load at the Exhibition Hall at the Alliant Energy Center of Dane County (East entrance - 2nd set of doors from the hotel) at 11:30 a.m.
