Brief discussion of (Neuromusculo-)
Skeletal disorders of Australian livestock: from Bulldog calves to Sonic Hedgehog mutants Why integrated system approach & importance? Acquired disorders: what’s old & Australian? Congenital disorders: what’s old, new & global? Conclusion: pathogenesis just keeps getting better!

Why are livestock skeletal disorders important? Global food security challenge: 9.5b Australian ag. 80m sheep, 30m cattle, feeds 60m; our science feeds 0.5b Our ancient soil environment produces important & interesting entities Global food security concerns needs increasing livestock product trade; global sharing of elite germplasm…..& mutations Need for improved surveillance programs BUT laboratory cut-backs; some disorders are important scientifically; which ones? Now improved display of genomes of infectious & inherited disorders; how diagnostic & informative is this without pathology? Our challenge: improve pathological surveillance with less resources? better tools; information transfer & sharing international collaborations more important

4-5 months old Merino or 1st -cross lambs, weaned at ~ 3m, Riverina Grazing on winter cereal crops; oats, lush pasture, ?cloudy weather Lameness, fractures, respond to injections of vitamins ADE +/- calcium Prevent by grazing clover pastures & supplementing with Ca or roughage
