Appendix IV: Q-set in English 1. Poor and marginalised communities must have control over the environmental resources on which their wellbeing and livelihoods depend 2. Inequality undermines sustainability so redistributive policies are necessary (e.g., agrarian reform, fiscal transfers, progressive taxation or other public spending mechanisms) 3. Gender equality is an essential requirement for environmental sustainability 4. Governments have a responsibility to move workers out of unsustainable jobs and assist them in moving into fair and sustainable work 5. The standard working week should be reduced to share the benefits of employment more widely and reduce consumption 6. Progress should be measured not by GDP but rather in terms of ‘wellbeing’ and ‘happiness’ criteria like education, health, leisure time, spiritual and emotional fulfilment, community cohesion, and environmental sustainability 7. The concept of happiness is too subjective and problematic to pursue as a policy goal 8. Strong economic growth in all countries is necessary for transitioning to a fair and sustainable global economy 9. Rather than move away from a growth-based economy, we should focus on decoupling material growth from resource use and pollution 10. Wealthy countries need to move away from growth-based economies because continuous growth in production and consumption is unsustainable and not improving people’s wellbeing 11. Economic growth is a major problem; it tends to generate inequalities, deplete nonrenewable resources, and provoke conflict 12. Economic relations based on cooperation and sharing are more sustainable than marketbased economic relations 13. Our economic system should be less anthropocentric by prioritising the long-term preservation of nature over people’s short-term needs and desires 14. Poor people and low-income countries need to be safeguarded against potential impacts and costs during the transition to a sustainable global economy 15. In countries with ambitious environmental policies, energy-intensive sectors should be compensated to ensure that they don’t lose competitiveness or relocate to other countries 16. The most effective way to protect nature is to put an economic value on ecological resources and services 17. Putting an economic value on nature is necessary, but we should be wary about extending this to market-based mechanisms that allow nature to be commoditised and traded 18. Putting a price on nature is dangerous and undesirable; protecting nature is too important to be left to the whims of the market 19. We need to accelerate the pace of technology transfer from the North to South to facilitate climate change mitigation and adaptation 20. We cannot rely on ‘technological fixes’ to reconcile economic development with planetary limits 21. ‘Green growth’ should be promoted by reducing barriers to international trade and foreign investment 22. Some countries are using environmental standards simply as an excuse for imposing restrictions on international trade 23. To move towards a fair and sustainable global economic system, we need to abandon market liberalisation which damages the environment and exacerbates inequalities 24. Leading businesses are already integrating sustainability into their corporate culture and decision-making

6

25. Small and medium enterprises are better suited to promoting sustainability and human wellbeing than multinational corporations 26. Capitalism is the only viable economic system so we must find ways to make it work more sustainably 27. Sustainable development cannot exist within a capitalist system 28. We need policies to reduce the power of transnational corporations because they are obstructing the transition to sustainable economies 29. Governments need to eliminate subsidies for environmentally damaging activities and use these funds to invest in new clean technologies 30. No more fossil fuel energy infrastructure should be built anywhere 31. Low-income countries will need to continue to use fossil fuels for the foreseeable future to reduce poverty and promote development 32. Human nature is a major impediment to living sustainably; people are greedy, selfish, competitive, and short-term in their thinking 33. The only sustainable economy is a steady-state economy, based on maintaining a stable level of resource consumption and a stable population 34. People should be legally prohibited from engaging in behaviour that damages the environment 35. Industrialised countries have an ‘ecological debt’ which must be paid to developing countries to finance their sustainable development 36. We don’t need to choose between environmental sustainability and economic growth; it is possible to reduce pollution and preserve ecosystems while increasing jobs and profits 37. We should be aiming to consume less rather than just use resources more efficiently 38. The Earth is a living sentient being and deserves the same rights as are accorded to human beings 39. Our economies should become much more regionalised and localised. Obtaining goods and services from local markets is good for people and the environment 40. Collaborative governance including governments, business, and civil society is essential for envisaging and implementing a sustainable economy 41. Democracy is an impediment to transitioning to a sustainable economy 42. All forms of life, nature, and scientific knowledge should be considered common property and not subjected to intellectual property rules 43. Ideas like ‘green economy’ promoted by Western governments only benefit the rich and big business 44. By greening our economies we can accelerate growth, generate new and decent jobs, and reduce poverty 45. We can integrate ecological and social sustainability concerns into modes of production without abandoning markets or free trade 46. Developing a truly green economy is probably not possible so it makes more sense to aim for ‘greener economies’ 47. Everyone contributes to environmental degradation so each of us should take responsibility for reducing our individual impact 48. The global economy is slowly but surely becoming green

Appendix V: Q-set in Spanish 1.
