Introduction The CDM COL Android Player is an Android application that takes advantage of Adobe AIR technology to provide COL lecture viewing capabilities on Android devices. It is designed for use on Android tablet devices. It displays the lecture video, the whiteboard contents, and the lecturer’s computer screen. Once accessed, lectures are stored on the user’s Android device and can be viewed without an Internet connection.

Installation The COL Android Player is currently unavailable in the Android Market, so you must follow these steps to install the player on your Android tablet or smartphone. 1) Install the Adobe AIR Runtime In order to run the COL Android Player, you must first install the Adobe AIR Runtime from the Android Market. Open the “Market” application and search for “Adobe AIR runtime” – click it to install the application free of charge.

2) Enable unknown sources for application installation Before attempting to install the COL player, you must allow applications to be installed from non-Market sources on your device. To do this, navigate to the “Applications” item in your Android device’s “Settings” application. Check the box marked “Unknown Sources.” The screenshot below is an example from a Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 running Android 3.0.

3) Install the COL Android player Option 1 (may not work on all Android devices) Open the web browser on your Android device and navigate to https://col.cdm.depaul.edu/players/android/COL.apk. You will be prompted to download and install the software. Press “Install” to complete the installation.

3

Option 2 (should work on all Android devices) Since Android does not natively come with any method of browsing the file system on your SD card, you will need to install a file browser from the Android Market. Open the Android Market and search for “file browser.” There are a lot of file browsers available on Android; we recommend ES File Explorer because it is free and easy to use.

Once you have installed the file browser, connect your Android device to your computer using a USB cable. Download the COL Android Player application from https://col.cdm.depaul.edu/players/android/COL.apk on your computer and copy it to the SD card on your Android device. Open the file browser on your Android device and navigate to the location where you saved the COL.apk file. Tap the COL.apk icon to install the application, and press “Install” to confirm the installation.

4

Login & Load Lecture List When you open the COL Android Player, it will prompt you to log in. Enter your Campus Connection username and password to populate your lecture recordings. If you wish, you can save your credentials for automatic login by checking the “Save user information for auto login” button. The application will show the available lecture recordings for the current quarter.

Lecture List Interface

The main page of the application lists all lectures available to you at the current time. There are several icons that indicate the status of each lecture.

This icon indicates that the lecture is available, but has not yet been downloaded. This animated icon indicates that the lecture is in the process of being downloaded. This icon indicates that a lecture is queued up for downloading. It appears when you try to download an additional lecture while one lecture is already downloading. This text appears when a lecture is being downloaded. The percentage indicates the download progress. This icon indicates a lecture that has been downloaded and is ready for viewing. Pressing this icon will delete a downloaded lecture.

6

Download and Play a Lecture Select a lecture recording by tapping on its title. The lecture will begin downloading, and a percentage will appear to indicate how much progress the download has made (see the icon reference table on the previous page). When the lecture has completed downloading and displays the proper icon indicating that the download is complete, tap on it again to view the lecture. Please note that having your tablet plugged in to the power adapter will increase the download speed.

7

Lecture Viewing Interface The lecture player view displays the recorded lecture, first whiteboard, second whiteboard, and the screen of the lecturer’s computer. To switch between these views, simply tap the thumbnail of whichever view you wish to enlarge and make primary.

  

Tap “Pause” to pause the lecture recording. The button will change to “Play” – tap that to resume playing the lecture recording. Tap “Done” to return to the main menu. Note that your position in the lecture will not be saved once you exit the lecture playback screen. To move throughout the lecture, drag the circular playhead along the lecture’s timeline.

8

Deleting Downloaded Lecture Downloaded lectures take up a lot of space on your device, so at times you might like to delete them in order to free up space. In order to delete a lecture, simply tap the trash can icon next to the lecture that you wish to delete. The lecture popup will appear with the option to “Clear” the lecture. Tap “Clear” and the app will prompt you to make sure you want to delete the lecture – tap “Yes” to delete.

Submit Error If you require any technical support with lecture playback on your Android device or have any comments/suggestions regarding the application, please contact us by submitting an Error Report using this form: http://colsupport.cdm.depaul.edu/ErrorReport.aspx
