The Coretta Scott King Award The Coretta Scott King Award’s stated purpose is to encourage the artistic expression of the African American experience via literature and the graphic arts, including biographical, social, historical, and social history treatments by African American authors and illustrators. The Award is designed to commemorate the life, works, and dreams of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., and to honor Mrs. Coretta Scott King. Award books are chosen by a seven-member national award jury. No illustration award was given in the years 1985, 1975 through 1977, and 1970 through 1973.
