COUNTABLE ATHLETICALLY RELATED ACTIVITIES Countable Athletically Related Activity (CARA) Documentation and Monitoring Procedures Each week, coaches are required to submit a CARA Log to the Office for Athletics Compliance. This form is available in two formats depending on the defined week declared by the head coach prior to the start of the academic year and are available on the compliance office website. The compliance officer responsible for monitoring countable athletically related activities will review each CARA log once it is submitted to the compliance office and ensure that all hours recorded are in compliance with NCAA regulations. At the end of each month, a compliance officer will randomly select 1-2 student-athletes from each sport to stop by the compliance office and verify that the CARA Logs submitted by their head coach are accurate. Any issues found throughout this process will be reported to the Assistant Athletics Director for Compliance and investigated further. If discrepancies arise between the head coach and student-athlete(s), a larger pool of student-athletes will be randomly selected to review the CARA Logs. Any and all activities determined to be a violation of NCAA rules will follow the violation process outlined in the IUPUI Institutional Compliance Manual. Student-Athletes are encouraged to talk to their coach, sport administrator, or an IUPUI compliance officer about any questions/concerns regarding countable athletically related activities. Permissible Hours of Countable Athletically Related Activities During the playing season, NCAA Bylaw 17.1.6 determines that a student-athlete’s participation in countable athleticallyrelated activities shall be limited to a maximum of four (4) hours per day and twenty (20) hours per week with one (1) required day off. In addition, there are no hour limitations or day off requirements during official vacation periods.

During the off-season, however, studentOut of Season athletes are limited to eight (8) hours per Maximum 8 Hours Each Week week of countable athletically related activities. Furthermore, ONLY required Maximum 4 Hours Each Day conditioning, weight training, and individual skill instruction (two hours Maximum 2 Hours Skill Instruction Each Week maximum) are permitted. In addition, At Least Two Required Days Off Each Week there shall be two (2) required days off during the off-season. No countable No CARA Allowed During Official Vacation Periods athletically related activities may occur No CARA Allowed During Finals Week and One Week Prior. during official vacation periods while the sport is out-of-season. Finally, the NCAA prohibits all countable athletically related activities outside of the playing season beginning with one (1) week prior to the start of the final examination period through the conclusion of final exams.

Definition: Voluntary Activity The following conditions MUST be met for an activity to be considered voluntary: • The student athlete must KNOW it is voluntary and must NOT be required to report info related to the activity back to the coach. • NO staff member may report info back to the coaches about the activity. • The activity must be initiated and requested solely by the student athlete. • The student athlete’s attendance may NOT be recorded and the student may NOT be subject to penalty if he/she does not participate. • IUPUI coaches/staff may NOT provide any incentive or recognition based on attendance or performance in the activity. • Safety exception sport coaches may be present and supervise but may not conduct voluntary workouts (all aquatics, field events). In all other sports, coaches may NOT be present at voluntary workouts.
