Course Title: Forty Hadith of Imam An Nawawi Course Faculty: Faculty of Authentic Spirituality Studies Course Description: This course will cover the study of the renowned 40 Hadith of Imam An Nawawi which cover the most comprehensive Hadith in our religion. Issues, of Imaan, Aqeedah, Sunnah/Bid'ah, morals, manners, heart softeners etc will be covered extensively throughout this course. A great deal of research will be conducted based upon the various commentaries available in order to maximize the amount of benefits derived from these precious Prophetic jewels. This is an ideal opportunity to study and understand the Deen in a comprehensive manner. Course Overview: In this course you will learn:               

What are the virtues of studying the Hadith? What is the difference between a Hadith and a Hadith Qudsi? Why is this collection of Hadith so famous and studied? What is meant by ‘comprehensive speech’? Why is the intention considered so important? What is the significance of Jibreel ‘Alaihissalaam appearing in the form of a human? How do we define the concept of innovation (Bid’ah) in Islam? Did Islaam spread by the sword? How should Muslims treat their guests? What is more stressed upon: doing good deeds or refraining from sin? What is the correct way of slaughtering animals? How can a person become a friend of Allah? Does asceticism really mean that a person abandons the dunya in totality? What are the higher objectives of the Shari’ah? What are the five main legal maxims?

Author’s Biography: The author of this collection of Ahadith is the great Imaam, Muhi Ud Deen Abu Zakariyyah Yahyaa Ibn Sharaf alHuzaam An Nawawi. He was born in Damascus in the year 621 AH and died in the year 676 AH (1233-1277). Imam An Nawawi was always known for his serious approach to life and his dedication for seeking knowledge. Having completed his memorisation of the Qur’an at a young age, he then went on to study other sciences of Islaam such that it is said that he would have twelve lessons on a daily basis. He was also known for his written works and over the course of 20-25 years, he wrote over 50 books in the fields of Fiqh and Aqeedah. Some of his famous works include his Explanation of Sahih Muslim which is the -1-

most commonly used, Riyadh as Saliheen, and his Majmoo’ (30 volumes) which despite the fact that it is predominantly based upon Shafi’i Fiqh, is used by scholars of all schools of thought. This is a sign of the acceptance that he received from the entire Ummah and Inshaa Allah it is a sign that He has received acceptance from Allah. Course Duration: This course is taught over a 3 month period, each week’s lesson consists of 3 hours class time. Course Materials: A course pack containing the translation of “The Forty Hadith of Imam An Nawawi” will be provided. You should also bring a notepad and pen to take notes. Homework: For 3 hours of class work you will need to do at least 2 hours of homework (rewriting notes and assignments set by your tutor) and revision each week. Examinations: The final examination for what you will have learnt throughout this course, takes place on week 11, this consists of a 90 Minute written paper. The pass mark for this course is 50%.
