Craig Michael Berg I enlisted in the United States avy shortly after high school (April 24, 2001) with one reason in mind, I needed money for school. A few months after I graduated from boot camp at Great lakes on June 31, 2001, I realized the true obligation, importance, and responsibility of my decision and choice to join the United States Military. On September 11th, I was going to “A” School in Pensacola, Florida, when the base began to lock down. one of us had any idea yet of what was going on, however we knew we would soon find out. As we all know, the terrible things that happened on that infamous date. I learned one other lesson. There is no other organization in the world that can pull together and operate as a team better than the United States Military. It was an impressive moment in my life and I can honestly say I am a better man for it. I graduated “A” School on December 20th, 2001, and shipped out to aval Air Station Lemoore in California for more schooling until finally ending up at my final duty station, aval Air Station Oceana (Virginia Beach, Virginia), one year after my enlistment date on April 24th, 2002. I served the remaining four years in Virginia Beach except for the multiple deployments I made on the USS CV-71 Theodore Roosevelt. The USS Theodore Roosevelt was a nuclear powered aircraft carrier that held over 6000 men and women. It literally was a floating city and the most impressive ship I have ever seen in my life. In Oceana, and aboard the Roosevelt, I served as an “I” level avionics electrician technician. I repaired communication, radar and defensives systems for many kinds of aircraft, including F-18 and F-14’s. During my deployments, we spent most of our time out to sea time in the Persian Gulf, running regular flight ops where jets left full of ordnance and came back empty. These missions supported the Marine Corps, Army, and Air Force in their fight against terror in Iraq and Afghanistan. I was lucky enough to visit many countries including Spain, Italy, Greece, Turkey and the United Arab Emirates. During my five years in the service, I learned many lessons, made many friends, and most importantly, made many memories that will last a lifetime.
