Crocodile Shawl

The Crocodile Shawl Designed by Cristina Mershon One Size Fits All This crocodile stitch shawl, has a modified version of the standard crocodile stitch. Instead of showing the wrong side of the double crochet forming every scale, we modified the stitch so you get to see the more beautiful side of the right side of the double crochets. It’s a more sophisticated version of that classic stitch. The Casablanca yarn showcases every scale, creating a very lively garment that is sure to turn heads and keep you warm. Yarn: Cascade Yarns Casablanca (57% wool, 24% silk, 19% mohair). 100 gr/220 yard skeins. Color: 20 (Farmers Market), 10 skeins. Hook: Size D-3.25 mm. Adjust hook size if necessary to obtain correct gauge. Notes: The shawl is constructed in one piece, starting from the bottom tip up to the top, then creating a top edging and continuing crocheting the dangling fringe.

STICH GUIDE: V-Stitch (v-st): dc, ch 2, dc on same st. Beginning V-Stitch (beg v-st): Ch 5, dc on same beg st. Scale: 6 dc on the first dc post from v-st on previous row starting at top of the post, 6 dc in next dc post from v-st on previous row, starting from bottom to top of the post. Scales are worked along the posts of the double crochets from the previous round of v-stitches. Once you are done working a round of v-st, turn your work 90º clockwise, then working along the posts of the dc from the previous rnd, work 6 dc, starting at the top of the dc post, so you will have 6 dc in a post sideways. Turn your work again 90º and crochet another 6 dc on the second dc that forms the v-st from previous rnd, but this time starting at bottom of the dc post. Beginning scale (beg scale): Same as a regular scale, but start with ch 3 for the first dc. Ch 5, 5 dc on the first dc post from v-st on previous row starting at top of the post, 6 dc in next dc post from v-st on previous row, starting from bottom to top of the post.

Scallop cluster (scallop cl): Ch 3, 2 unfinished dc (this means to hold back last loop on both dc on hook), yarn over, pull through all loops on hook. INSTRUCTIONS: Ch 6, close circle with sl st in beg ch to form a ring. Row 1: Ch 3, 11 dc in ring. Do not close the ring and do not turn, just rotate your work 90º clockwise. Row 2: At the end of row 1, work a beg v-st (see stitch guide) on the top of the last dc from the previous row, skip dc (this dc will be sideways), v-st in chain loop, skip 3-ch from previous row, v-st in third beg ch, rotate your work 90º clockwise. We will have a total of 3 v-st in this row. This will be the foundation row for the scales on next row. Do not turn over your work, we will keep working on the same right side of the garment, adding dc on the post of the v-st’s dc we just created. Row 3: Working on top of the previous row, beg scale (see stitch guide) on first dc post from first v-st on previous row, skip next v-st, scale (see stitch guide) on next v-st. Row 4: Beg v-st, skip dc post, v-st on middle of v-st from previous row, skip dc post, v-st in middle of v-st from two previous rows below and in between scales from previous row, skip dc post, v-st on middle of v-st, skip 3-ch, v-ts on 3rd last ch, rotate work 90º clock wise. Row 5: Working on top of previous row, beg scale on first dc post from first v-st, *[skip next v-st, scale on next v-st], rep from * across until the end of the row. Row 6: Beg v-st, *[ skip dc post, v-st on middle of v-st from previous row, skip dc post, v-st in middle of v-st from the previous rows below and in between scales from previous row], rep from * until the end of the row. Row 7-80: Repeat rows 5 and 6. At the end of row 80, do not fasten off, we will continue creating a top border, and then a fringe.

Row 81: Working along the top of the shawl, work the first scallop cl in beg ch, *[ skip dc post, sc on middle of v-st from previous row, scallop cl in same st, skip dc post, sc on middle of v-st from two previous rows below and in between scales from previous row, scallop cl in same st], rep from * across until the end of the row. Do not fasten off and do not turn, we will continue creating the fringe along the sides of the shawl triangular shape. Row 82: This row will be the fringe that goes across the triangular sides of the shawl. *[ Ch 24, 18 dc in fourth ch from hook, ch 3, sl st in beg ch (it creates a scale similar to the ones on the shawl), ch 20, skip 3 scales sideways and attach it with a sc in between the third and the fourth scale], rep from * across until the end of the two triangular sides, fasten off, weave in ends and block.
