Neuroptera, Raphidioptera and Mecoptera of the Podyjí National Park (Czech Republic) Jan Š e v č í k Neuroptera, Raphidioptera and Mecoptera of the Podyjí National Park (Czech Republic). – Čas. Slez. Muz. Opava (A), 59: 103-112, 2010 A b s t r a c t: A total of 48 species of Neuroptera, 6 species of Raphidioptera and 6 species of Mecoptera are recorded from Podyjí National park in southern Moravia. The material was obtained mainly during dipterological research in the years 2001 – 2004 by means of Malaise traps and also by individual collecting by the author. Three species, Coniopteryx drammonti Rousset, 1964, Dichochrysa abdominalis (Brauer, 1856) and Chrysoperla mediterranea (Hölzel, 1972), are for the first time recorded from the Czech Republic. Introduction In the recent checklist by Jedlička et al. (2004), 85 species of Neuroptera were reported from the Czech Republic, of which 78 are from Moravia (including Czech Silesia). A total of 10 species of Raphidioptera and 10 species of Mecoptera are currently known from the Czech Republic (Zelený 1977, Chládek 1985, Ševčík 1997, 1999). Species composition of these insect orders in the territory of Podyjí NP has not yet been systematically studied and only several records of conspicuous species were published (e.g. Kačírek 1995, 1999, Zelený 1971). During the years 2001 – 2004, an intensive research aimed at the order Diptera was carried out there by prof. Miroslav Barták (Czech Agricultural University, Prague) using various collecting methods (Barták & Kubík 2005). The residual material from Malaise traps contained also many specimens of Neuroptera, Raphidioptera and Mecoptera, and that material was the main basis for this paper. Study area and methods Podyjí National Park (63 km2) is situated in southern Moravia along the Dyje River valley on the CzechAustrian state border, between the towns Vranov nad Dyjí and Znojmo. The park comprises a wide range of habitats, mainly steppe grasslands, thermophilous oak forests and also submontane beech forests (for details see e.g. Chytrý et al. 1999, Chytrý & Vicherek 1995, Grulich & Chytrý 1993). Material for this paper was collected mainly during dipterological research in the years 2001 – 2004 by means of Malaise traps (M. Barták & Š. Kubík leg.) and by sweep netting by the author in 2004 – 2005. Several specimens collected by other entomologists are also included. Descriptions and photographs of localities where Malaise traps were operated are given in Barták & Kubík (2005). All the specimens (unless otherwise indicated) are deposited in the collection of J. Ševčík (Ostrava). The identification of the Chrysoperla carnea complex was made according to the morphological characters described by Thierry et al. (1992) and using the key by Thierry et al. (1998). Abbreviations: NP = National Park; 1/3 = 1 male and 3 females; MT = Malaise trap (M. Barták & Š. Kubík leg.); SW = sweep netting (J. Ševčík leg.); * = species new to the fauna of the Czech Republic.

MECOPTERA Boreus westwoodi Hagen, 1866 Material examined: Konice, Trauznitzké údolí Valley, 16.1.2006, 1/0, 21.10.2007, 0/1, on mosses Hypnum cupressiforme, Brachythecium velutinum and on snow, J. Ševčík leg.

The identification of this species is only tentative as it has been demonstrated that the shape of dorsal abdominal plates in males and other morphological characters used for specific determination show considerable variation (Ševčík et al. 2008). The systematics of the genus Boreus Latreille, 1816 has not yet been clarified and all European forms may belong to only one species (cf. Ševčík & Hudeček 1994, Ševčík et al. 2008). Boreids are usually associated with mosses but they may be found also on snow (Fig. 4) due to their autumn and winter activity. Panorpa alpina Rambur, 1842 Material examined: Široké Pole, 3.5.-2.6.2003, 2/0 (MT).

A principally montane species, sometimes occurring in lower altitudes. Panorpa cognata Rambur, 1842 Material examined: Hnanice, along Daníž brook, 10.8.2006, 1/0 (SW).

A rare thermophilous species. In the Czech Republic, it is known only from one locality in Bohemia and from several localities in Moravia (Ševčík 1999). Panorpa germanica Linnaeus, 1758 Material examined: Braitava – letohrádek, 21.5.-12.6.2004, 0/4, 26.6.-31.7.2002, 1/2 (MT); Čížovský rybník, near pond, 29.4.-17.5.2001, 1/0 (MT); Horní Břečkov, near pond, 27.5.-26.6.2001, 2/2 (MT); Liščí skála, 27.5.28.6.2001, 2/0 (MT); Nad Šobesem, 3.5.-2.6.2003, 2/0 (MT); Pod Ledovými slujemi, 13.5.-1.6.2002, 7/2 (MT); Pod Šobesem, 8.-22.5.2002, 3/1, 22.5.-11.6.2002, 4/3 (MT); Terasy, 3.5.-2.6.2003, 0/1 (MT); Vraní skála, 20.5.5.6.2003, 7/1 (MT).

A common and widely distributed species. Panorpa communis Linnaeus, 1758 Material examined: Braitava – letohrádek, 26.6.-31.7.2002, 0/3, 21.5.-12.6.2004, 2/0 (MT); Horní Břečkov, near pond, 27.5.-26.6.2001, 0/1 (MT); Pod Ledovými slujemi, 13.5.-1.6.2002, 5/7 (MT); Pod Šobesem, 8.22.5.2002, 1/0, 22.5.-11.6.2002, 5/2 (MT); Terasy, 3.5.-2.6.2003, 2/1 (MT); Vraní skála, 20.5.-5.6.2003, 1/0 (MT).

A common species, mainly in lowlands and warm places. Panorpa vulgaris Imhoff & Labram, 1836 Material examined: Pod Ledovými slujemi, 13.5.-1.6.2002, 3/0 (MT).

A common and widely distributed species, formerly confused with the previous species (cf. Ševčík 1999). Conclusions A total of 48 species of Neuroptera belonging to 7 families, 6 species of Raphidioptera and 6 species of Mecoptera have been recorded in the Podyjí National Park up to the present. Podyjí NP thus belongs to the most species-rich areas in the Czech Republic with regard to the fauna of neuropteroid insects and Mecoptera. Both steppe and sylvicolous species are well represented. Three species are reported here as new for the Czech Republic and have not yet been recorded from any other Czech locality. One species (D. pantherinus) is treated as critically endangered according to the recent Czech Red list (Zelený 2005), four species (D. tetragrammicus, H. elegans, S. terminalis, V. nigricollis) as endangered and three species (E. nostras, M. styriaca, O. fulvicephalus) as vulnerable. Two additional species were recorded from Znojmo (without any details) by Zelený (1971), Chrysopa pallens (Rambur, 1838) and Ch. commata Kis & Újhelyi, 1965, but as there is no recent and well localized material I have not included them into the fauna of Podyjí NP until a new material is collected. Several other species have not yet been recorded but may occur in the park. For example, at least one species of Bittacus Latreille (Mecoptera: Bittacidae) could be found there in the future as two species of this genus are known from several localities in southern Moravia (see e.g. Tajovský & 109

Lauterer 1986). At least two species of Wesmaelius Kruger, 1922 (Neuroptera: Hemerobiidae) and Nineta flava (Scopoli, 1763) (Neuroptera: Chrysopidae) certainly occur in the area as they are widespread in central Europe. Also Inocellia crassicornis (Schummel, 1832) (Raphidioptera: Inoceliidae) should be recorded there as its larvae develop under the bark of pines (Pinus spp.) and larch (Larix decidua), see Ševčík (1995). On the other hand, the occurrence of Libelloides macaronius (Scopoli, 1763) is less probable although the steppe areas in the eastern part of the park may represent suitable habitat for this species. A c k n o w l e d g e m e n t s: The administration of Podyjí National Park provided permission for this research. I thank V. Křivan and M. Škorpík for additional information and material. I am also grateful to J. Holuša and Ľ. Vidlička for useful comments on the manuscript.
