Emlenton Lights Up the Holiday Season Picturesque. One word is all you need to describe the little town of Emlenton on Friday, December 6th as the snow was falling, children were gathered, the tree was lit, and Santa was on his way. Emlenton’s Light Up Night was in full swing and you could feel the excitement in the air as Santa Claus rode in on a fire truck to greet all of the children. The jolly old Saint Nick stopped at the newly lit Christmas tree in town to wave to all the onlookers before going to the social hall to await all the boys and girls that wanted to tell him their list of gifts desired this Christmas. But first, families ushered their young ones to all of the businesses listed on the “Passports to The North Pole”. Around one hundred children were in attendance and each one was able to see all of the sights and visit all of the shops, making this first Light Up Night an enormous success for Emlenton. 15 businesses participated and each one had a very special treat to give away including hot chocolate, candy, hot dogs, coloring books, treat bags, a commemorative t-shirt and much more. The social hall in the Presbyterian Church had Santa stationed where children could get their pictures taken by Identity Studios, have an elaborate balloon animal made, grab some cupcakes, decorate their very own ornament and complete their passports to be entered into the drawing for the i-pod nano, won by Gunner Heeter. A special thanks needs to go out to the Emlenton VFD,

Venango College S.E.E.D. Club Provides Fleece Blankets for Shelter OIL CITY — Studying, Exploring and Engaging Discipleship (S.E.E.D.), a student organization at Venango College of Clarion University, hit the ground running this year with a full slate of campus activities and service projects. S.E.E.D. members learned of the PPC Violence Free Network and Shelter – a program of Family Service & Children’s Aid Society of Venango County – and its services after studying domestic violence issues for World Day of Prayer last spring.

The PPC building flooded this year and the damage resulted in the loss of half of their pantry of canned goods. S.E.E.D. club members are helping to clear damaged goods and reorganize items in the basement. “The club members were very touched by people they met at the PPC building and decided to change plans for the use of their budget to purchase fleece to make up to 20 blankets for the shelter,” said Ms. Casey McVay, club advisor. God, Music and Forgiveness for Christmas

By Chris Henderson

With Dick and Mike

Tony Rossi, Director of Communications, The Christophers Dick’s Thoughts: Pitt’s Aaron Donald won the Bednarkik, Nagurski, Outland, and Lombardi Trophies, a clean sweep for a defensive lineman and yet was not invited to the Heisman Award ceremony. If a player sweeps every major award and can’t make the Top 6 for the NY Athletic Club, a defensive player will never win the Heisman. I just remembered the great Manti Te’o finished as the Heisman runner up last year. Urban Meyer in 2 seasons is 24-1 at Ohio $tate. He is also 01 against teams ranked in the Top 10 during those 2 years. Michigan State has a good team, but they did not really beat anyone this year and lost to Notre Dame. Auburn beat 2 teams in the Top 5 in a 7 day period. Thank heavens we were spared of having to watch Urban and his Buckeyes in the National Championship Game this year. The 5 touchdowns scored in 2:01 of the Vikings Ravens game were the fastest 5 touchdowns since 1983. None of the players scoring in this 2013 game were born back in 1983. In the recent Philadelphia Eagles win over the Detroit Lions 34-20, there was a not a single point scored by a kicker. Which Pirates off season move has you the most excited? Extending Charlie Morton’s contract, bringing back Clint Barmes, signing Edinson Volquez, or trading for Chris Stewart? Charlie has some potential, Barmes and Stewart each hit 211 last year, and Volquez had an ERA of 5.71 of last season. It looks like the Bucs might be trying to catch lightning in a bottle again. The minimum salary in MLB is $490,000 while Obama is paid $400,000. In 1963 JFK was $100,000 and only Willie Mays at $105,000 made more. As the weather continues to worsen and we are again reminded of global warming, I thought of one of my favorite quotes. Former Steeler great Bubby Brister once said about playing at 3 Rivers Stadium, “It’s hard to play at 3 Rivers because the wind blows off the lake.” Bubby was not a geography major. Dicks’ Pick STEELERS @ Green Bay: Will Aaron Rogers play or not that is the question. A battle of 2 teams going nowhere fast. I hope it snows so there is a reason to watch this one. Rothleisberger is pretty good in meaningless games. Steelers 16 Pack 13 Thought of the week: Always be yourself because the people that matter don’t mind, and the ones that mind don’t matter. Well, it’s that time of year yet again. It’s time once again to look at Christmas shopping for the outdoor people on your list. This is, in fact, one of my favorite columns of the whole year, so here goes. Of course, we can’t cover all of the possibilities, or even most of them. Hopefully, however, these ideas will be useful, or at least serve as a springboard for ideas of your own. A good, rugged outdoor watch makes a wonderful and useful gift. The fact of the matter is that hunting in the rain, as well as fishing, is just too much for a a really cheap watch. A good one may cost fifty bucks or more, but it’s worth it. Make sure the one you choose is water-resistant to at least fifty feet. While, true, it will probably never be down that far, this rating shows that it’s really sealed well. I’ve had one of these for several years. It’s been submerged countless times, had gasoline and other chemicals spilled on it, and been abused just about every way possible, yet it still runs just fine. Vise-Grip adjustable locking pliers make a great gift. Around this time of year, you can buy gift sets featuring various size and styles. These are amazingly sturdy and versatile. When out in a boat, they’re about the only tool you really need. You can replace a cotter pin, use them to remove the nut to replace a shear pin, tighten a loose fuel fitting and a variety of other little jobs. They’re also great if the cylinder on your propane lantern is too tight, or for changing the gas tank on your outdoor grill. There’s just no end to their uses. You can even use them to pinch on split shot sinkers. Vise-Grip also markets a multitool which features pliers plus a number of other handy tools all in one. Fishing-oriented gifts are available to fit almost any budget. Rod and reel combos are what usually come to mind first, but the price tag for good ones is often a bit intimidating. Many lure companies, such as Mepps, market gift packs of lures, usually geared toward a certain type of fishing, such as trout, panfish, etc. Jewelry with an outdoor theme to it can make a truly unique gift. For women, I have seen a lot of earrings and necklaces in the shapes of various animals and birds, while for men, cuff links and tie tacks are perennial favorites. A lot of hunters are pretty big on collecting knives, so there we have yet another gift idea. There is, however, an old superstition about giving a knife as a gift. You’re supposed to make the recipient of the gift knife give you a penny, or, in effect, buy the knife from you. Depending on which legend you listen to, a variety of unpleasant things can happen if you give a knife to someone for free. In fact, some knives come with a penny in the package to deal with this custom. Books make great gifts, too. Most outdoor folks thoroughly enjoy reading about their favorite pastimes. How-to books, “Me and Joe” nostalgia works and humorous books are all available at reasonable prices. Pat McManus’ hilarious books are guaranteed to make any outdoor man or woman chuckle. Magazine subscriptions rank right up there, too. It’s really great, on a cold winter day, to go to the mailbox and discover one of your favorite magazines. Well, I hope you find some of these ideas to be useful. It seems impossible that Christmas is so close, but it is.

Great songs are often inspired by difficult times, even great Christmas songs. Yet music has a way of turning pain into a relatable way of connecting with others, a form of consolation, and even an opportunity to create a more hopeful situation. When former “American Idol” finalist Brooke White released her Christmas album—called appropriately enough, “White Christmas”—she didn’t just include her favorite joyful hymns and carols; she also included a new song, “Christmas Card,” that has the potential to impact people in a positive way because it contains a message of reconciliation. During an interview on “Christopher Closeup,” White explained, “I’d like to say that every relationship I’ve had is peachy and dandy and there’s never been any sort of contention. But that’s just not life. There are always a few people that something happens with or you lose touch with. So that was on my mind and my heart.” When she sat down to write an original song for the album, the idea of opening her address book to start working on Christmas cards popped into her mind. She thought of seeing the name of a person with whom a relationship had been severed and wondering if she should send them a card. White said, “There’s that thought that maybe this is my chance to reach out. It doesn’t mean that everything’s fixed or back to normal, but it’s an attempt at either forgiving another person for being hurtful or apologizing to a person for, even in the most innocent ways, hurting them. I think every human being has a few people that they wish they could make things right with. So this song is my opportunity to put that into words.” One of the motivations for White’s recording “Christmas Card” and other songs on the album, like “O Come All Ye Faithful” and “Silent Night,” was her faith. She said, “I wanted it to be, not just a fun Christmas record, but one that celebrates Christ. ‘Christmas Card,’ even though it doesn’t necessarily bring up Christ, it’s about forgiveness which is a strong Christian theme.” The traditions of home are on White’s mind since she grew up in Mesa, Arizona, in a family that cut down its own Christmas tree (and still does)—and went for twice-weekly rides in their Aerostar van to look at Christmas lights in the neighborhood. However, White is no longer just a daughter, sister and wife; she’s a mom. In May 2012, she gave birth to her and her husband Dave’s first child: a daughter named London. And just like Jesus came as a gift of love for all of us, London has been a divine blessing as well. White said, “I had just gotten home from New York and performing at the Rockefeller Center tree lighting. I laid London down to take a nap and she locked eyes with me…I was stressed out at the moment and a little overwhelmed— and she looked at me and, truly, it was like the face of God. It’s like she was telling me, ‘This is what’s important, and it’s okay.’” White concluded, “Since she was born, everything shifted in my mind. I know most every parent goes through some sort of transformation, but for me it was instant with London. She came out not crying; her eyes were open, and she was this alert little person ready to live. I can’t wait to see this little person blossom and grow. I love her. She’s perfect. She is love.” For a free copy of the Christopher News Note, MAKING CHRISTMAS HAPPY AND HOLY, write: The Christophers, 5 Hanover Square, New York, NY 10004; or e-mail: [email protected]

"Baby" (or deciduous) teeth may begin to fall out and be replaced by permanent teeth starting at approximately six years of age, but that does not mean that they are expendable. Baby teeth play an important role in aligning the spacing of subsequent permanent teeth. They also serve to support the upper and lower jaws in proper alignment. Thus, parents will want to join the dentist in doing everything possible to preserve the health of their children's baby teeth. If these place-setters are lost prematurely to injury or decay, it may adversely affect the position-

ing of the teeth that will replace them. For this reason and others, children should adopt healthy oral care habits at an early age. P.S. As emerging permanent teeth push against the roots of overlying deciduous teeth, the roots of the baby teeth dissolve and become absorbed by the forming permanent teeth.

Former Emlenton Residents Write History of the Adam Berlin Family A book about Clarion, Venango, McKean, and Forest County Families is now available. The book is called Adam Berlin Family 1598 to 2013. It begins with the birth of Adam Berlin in Niederbronn, Alsace, France in 1598. His grandson, Jacob Berlin came to America in November 1738, with his two Brothers, Abraham and Frederick. Their parents died aboard the ship “Charming Nancy” during the trip and were buried in the Atlantic Ocean. The book centers mostly on John Josiah Berlin, born 1864 and married Rosa Catherine “Kate’ Exley. They lived in Clarion County. It traces all of their families to 2013. The book contains stories of their struggles to settle in this area. Many pictures of all

Post of Cherry Valley wish everyone a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!

★ NOTICE ★

The Progress News - December 17, 2013 – Page A-5 What invokes Christmas for you? For most Christians it’s foremost about celebrating the joy of Christ’s birth and then, yes, other pleasures do come to mind. Pleasures such as the smell and taste of various Christmas treats - cookies, candies, cakes, pies or the camaraderie of the annual family feast redolent with good cheer as well as roasting turkey or ham. For others added joy comes from the pleasure of shopping and finding just the right gift for those on The List. Yet others enrich their Christmas experience by working with a charity to help provide for those who are in need. Then there are those for whom Christmas also means a getaway to a sandy beach or favorite ski resort. We are, all of us different from each other in the ways that we enjoy the pleasures of Christmas. In Rimersburg there is a home on Baker Street where Every Day is Christmas. And for Michael Goughler and Lindsley Dunn their Christmas spans the religious and secular - they always attend Christmas Eve church services; but the ‘icing on the cake’ is all about - Decoration! All of us who celebrate Christmas have early memories of those tinselly, shiny, bright objects that our family collected and displayed. Maybe we remember the ritual of stringing up lights outside, or going to choose a tree, or trimming that tree or placing an angel or Santa in just the right place. But for Goughler and Dunn the entire year, every year, is given over to displaying, acquiring and curating a tremendously varied collection of Christmas ornaments. In fact, their entire basement is a “Christmas Cave’ where all year long an everchanging display of Christmas decorations of every kind are on constant and ever-changing display. When the Christmas Season starts a larger display takes over the entire house, including the bathroom, bedrooms and kitchen. Everywhere one looks there is a thoughtfully placed and carefully arranged grouping of decorations - perhaps santas or angels, or elves, or a particular type of glass ornament, or a small themed tree, or wall display of various santa faces, an archival grouping of Shiny Bright ornament boxes, a clever montage of coiled ropes of lights beneath a wooden ‘Christmas Lights’ sign are some examples. The permutations and groupings are fascinating and endless. Both men, from earliest childhood, were obsessed with Christmas decorations and

The Collectors by jae Brown Jobb

have always collected ornaments and related items. Both men, in early childhood lived next door to women who were committed Christmas Decorators who showed them what to look for and sometimes how to make the decorations themselves. And both of these neighbor ‘Christmas Angels’ also, later in their lives gave to their beloved young friends the ‘pick’ of their extensive collections. Not only is there not a space in their Rimersburg home that is not occupied with a Christmas display or tree or hanging but there is not a speck of dust or disorder. The place is lavished with ornamentation but the attention and care obviously expended on each and every item is evident. When Christmas if finally over in the

Goughler/Dunn household each item is washed, dusted and/or brushed and carefully stored - if possible in its original box. The entire front of the attic is reserved for Christmas display items and these items, just as in a museum, are rotated so that each ornament has ‘its moment’. When not curating their collection, Goughler/Dunn are avidly adding to their trove. One of their most treasured sources are gifts from beloved friends and relatives, each item has an inherent story and a time-line. Then there is the constant drive to expand the collection that involves shopping everywhere from Goodwill, to eBay (“eBay is my downfall says Goughler.”) to pricey antique stores in pursuit of MORE!

Northwest Commission Receives Grant Award

Thanks to a grant from the Pennsylvania Department of Conservation and Natural Resources, The Northwest Pennsylvania Regional Planning & Development Commission is able to continue to fund and coordinate the Greenways Block Grant (GBG) Program for the northwest region. Since 2009, this program has been successful at targeting funds to projects that focus on the agency’s priorities of Sustainable and Green Parks, Trails, River Projects, Land Conservation, Statewide and Regional Partnerships, Heritage Areas, and Conservation Landscapes. The GBG program helps implement those smaller projects which may not be eligible or unable to compete for alternative funding. Emlenton readers will be intrigued to know that many of Michael Goughler’s ornaments and objects were given to him by early role models such as Rita Uber who, along with her mother, Laviniaa Wimer, first introduced him to shopping at Kraynak’s and inspired him with their love of beauty. Another source of inspiration for the young Michael was Myrna Graff whose display of candelabra so impressed that to this day her original window candelabra, along with others that were acquired later, are a fixture of every year’s display. Then there are Emil Long’s wonderful miniature buildings, crafted from paper, that once were used as Christmas display items in his store. And, of course, treasured Goughler family heirlooms are particularly prized and a Christmas plaque hand painted by Goughler’s son, Zach, has pride of place in the home. And longtime friend Kay Flores of Foxburg gifted the collection with, among other things, an overwhelmingly cool and authentic 50’s aluminum tree complete with color wheel. Although Lindsley grew up in Pulteney, New York his early mentor a Mrs. Lucille Shettler not only inspired the young boy with her beautiful decorations but in later life told him, when asked if she would give him any of her ornaments - “You go to the attic and take whatever you want.” (This tactful woman had first made a call to his mother to be sure the ornaments would be welcome.) And, he remembers one of his earliest Christmases vividly; and the image is immortalized in a beautifully framed snapshot of himself and his father beside the family tree. In a time when many people are no longer interested in the past - it is pleasurable to see the enthusiasm with which Goughler/Dunn embrace their own past, the past of friends and family and our culture’s past. It is touching to see them revel among their trove of decorations that create their ‘Christmas Tapestry’

park facilities, create trails, and conserve open space. "Our grant investments work to bolster our vision for the strength of our economy, the vibrancy of our communities, the health of our families and our quality of life in Pennsylvania," DCNR Secretary Richard Allen said. "These grants allow us to partner with communities so that they can expand and improve the assets that We Carry All Your make the places we call home viEquine Needs! tal and attractive."
