CHRISTIAN MOTORCYCLIST ASSOCIATION AUSTRALIA (VICTORIA)

National Run Centre of attention What is it about a National Run, be it the one just held or any other that makes me want to go? This is a very personal question. Of the 100 or so people that go to a National Run there would be a dozen different reasons of which three or four would perhaps be common. I think attendance at the National Run is part of my DNA as a member of CMA. It’s like going to church, which is something that Christians do as a matter of course. Going to the National Run is, for me, an obligation of membership of CMA just as going to church is an obligation for me as a Christian. Hebrews 10:25 is pivotal to my thinking about my relationship with God. It is a relationship nurtured and built up by my relationship with other Christians “Let us not give up meeting together as some are in the habit of doing, but let us encourage one another – and all the more as you see the Day approaching” The previous verse 24, is even more applicable to the National Run “let us consider how we may spur one another on towards love and good deeds”. How encouraged Victoria has been by Bikes for Pastors support from Queensland and South Australia. This has spurred us on to even greater effort. Continues page 4

Chairman's Chat Well the National Run has come and gone – what a great weekend with 105 registrations / good fellowship / setting in the picturesque Adelaide Hills / and accommodation at an old Baptist campsite which was ideal with dormitories, huts or camping facilities. Specific highlights included the State Leaders Meeting (actually 2 meetings) where agreement was reached between all states to form CMA Aust – a significant step as this has been coming for about 10 years !!! Equally significant was an agreement to affiliate with CMA International for those who wish to – a stipulated requirement for any individual to join with CMA Int. is that Are we so they must be a preoccupied member of CMA Aust (member state) before with the journey, that joining. On the journey over, John Krause led a small group of us through the Adelaide Hills via a visit to Goolwa (and saw a paddle steamer built by Echuca craftsmen), and viewed the Murray River actually flowing out to sea! Fantastic! The scenery was incredible and a generally dry and pleasant ride in all. (Ask John, Cass and Neville about the rain through Bendigo and Maryborough, en route to Ararat!!!)

we miss the essential message God has for us?

So it’s home again. Last Sunday night we watched a DVD titled “Everything is Spiritual” narrated by Rob Bell. Rob detailed the incomprehensible size of the galaxy and universe, right down to the tiniest particles known to quantum physics (Quarks?) and expounded upon

everything in creation having a spiritual aspect to it. Towards the end of the DVD, he gave the illustration of Moses being called by God up to the mountain to stay there. Rob suggested Moses probably used a lot of energy climbing the mountain, and would then be focussed on how he was going to get down. But he really needed to put aside these thoughts and focus on just “being there” and experience the occasion, the wonder of God’s presence. Do we do that? Are we so preoccupied with the journey, that we miss the essential message God has for us? There is a saying that: “We are only here for a short time, so we’d better make it a good time.” I suspect the author may not have been thinking of God in this context, but can I suggest it makes good sense to indeed make of our lives a “good time” under God’s authority. Let us experience the occasion and really be there, and not miss the opportunities that God provides. Happy and safe Riding – may God bless you. Regards, HAROLD

National RUN—South Australia Some reflections on the National Run Barry Huggett I am confident that the S.A. Bikers Bible project was spurred on by the support received from other States. Being encouraged is a wonderful byproduct of National Run attendance. Not the prime reason for going but an assured result.

Just because I regard attendance as a duty doesn’t mean I am not going to have fun – in fact I cannot think of any National Run that I have attended that hasn’t been fun (mind you the Sat afternoon ride one year in Tasmania’s sleet and cold came close). I cannot think of anywhere else that grown men and women act like complete idiots. What is the attraction in water filled balloons? Where, apart from CMA would you find a blind man riding a motorcycle?

Apart from my sense of duty, my most powerful motivation in attending, is building and reinforcing relationships which have been nurtured over many years. It is a joy to Let us not give renew contact with many people with whom I have formed close friendships. up meeting I know that because of geography I will together as not see them from one year’s end to the next but I consider them my some are in the friends and would like to think that habit of doing, they might consider me in the same way. but let us encourage one Obviously it takes time for real friendanother ship to develop but the process has got to start somewhere. I remember at my first National Run I only knew one person and had a nodding acquaintance with a couple of others.

Yes, I had a great time in Adelaide. Having, in obedience, made the commitment to go I was rewarded in so many ways, not least of which was the sense of adventure. The fact that I could do Adelaide to Melbourne in the day was a surprise to my aging bones as much as a tribute to the comfort of the Harley.

So make sure Queensland is in your calendar for 2011. You too will be rewarded!

Gippsland Snowy Ride - 6/11/2010 This was the 10th year of the Snowy Ride, it was started to raise awareness (& money) for Centre For Children's Cancer and Blood Disorders at the Sydney Children's Hospital. The Steve Walter Foundation run this ride, which has corporate support from Honda, Snowy Hydro, QBE, Echoice loans, NSW Parks and many more supporters. So far they've raised $3 million. This year also making an $80000 donation to the Children's Cancer Centre Foundation at the Royal Children's Hospital, Melbourne. The Steve Walter Foundation host 4 families each year (from Sydney clinic) to give them a weekend away in Thredbo. The Navy flies them down by helicopter and the Goldwing Club take them touring and look after their transport needs. The last 2 years there has been over 3200 bikes entered for this ride. Colin Hardy and his family So far they've & friends have been raised $3 supporting the ride for million. This many years, and last year year also John Krause & I went along for the experience. making an $80000 This year Colin & John organised the trip and the Children's accommodation (thanks Cancer Centre guys). Six of us left South GippsFoundation at land early on the Royal Thurs4th. Colin Children's on his Hornet & Steve on his Yamaha, riding naked bikes. John on VFR, Peter on his FJR, and my Sprint ST, and Paul on his GSXR750. Morning tea was at Bairnsdale and as the sky looked threatening we put on wet weather gear. Around Bruthen it started raining but was all clear by our lunch stop at Cann River. We stopped at Nimmitabel for a breather and decided to take at shortcut to Dalgety (over 10kms of good hard packed dirt). We arrived in Jindabyne just before 5pm and picked up the donation to

key for the house. $8 Schnitzels at the pub was the go for early tea, and John did some shopping for breaky stuff. We were joined later that night by some other riders from NSW and Shaun and his family from Leongatha. Friday morning was wet but we had Mr. Honda's bikes to ride at Thredbo, so we got going early. Arriving at 9.00am Thredbo Village was quiet and we have first choice of the bikes. This is a good way road-test new bikes on an interesting road for a 28km loop (pity about the rain). By lunchtime we had had 4 or 5 rides each. Honda brought 12 bikes - Goldwing down to CB400 including the new VFR1200. John & I headed back towards Jindabyne and found the road had dried out and the weather was better, so instead of turning right back to the house we turned left and headed for Charlotte's Pass. The road was clear, but the temperature dropping to 3c quickly as we climbed up through Perisher, and arriving at the car park @ Charlotte's Pass there was still fresh snow. Back home for afternoon tea and a shower and dry out the gear for next day.

Page 7

Saturday dawned fine & sunny (thanks Lord) - this was the Snowy Ride day. We chose a 300km loop taking in Berridale, Dalgety, Cooma and Adaminaby - late lunch, and back to the house by 2.30pm. 4pm we were back at the Skitube car park (on the way to Thredbo) in the mass ride - led by the police and the Goldwing Club. Just as we are getting ready for the presentations, speeches and the all important prize draws it starts raining. You wouldn't believe it - the VFR1200 prize goes to a young bloke standing just behind us in the crowd, he isn't even on a full licence yet ( Suzuki 250) but his dad was fairly happy! We headed out fairly quickly as many bikes head back towards Jindbyne and it can be mayhem. Arrived home and settled in for the night. Peter informed us that the shop owner had travelled to Bombala on the Dalgety road this week andfor advised himCass thatjoined the road headed home. John us for works dinner evening we were able to way chat and learn were nearly complete, so we decided to take this roadthat the next and morning on our home. more about CMA UK and CMA International. This road cut 45kms off son’s beingsign busywas with home renovations and John only 500mtrs was Melbourne. Bikes for Pastors Robert Ouku of Mbale, Uganda, pastors a local church and is also active in conferences, evangelistic crusades, and follow-up visits. As well as pastoring his own church he is part of a team which planted a new church 80 km from his home village. Robert visits this 3 times a week pedaling over 240 km a week on his faithful ‘treadly’. Poor roads, dangerous traffic and danger from armed nomads made this a time consuming and dangerous exercise. The successful completion of the 2010 appeal to provide a Yamaha motorcycle has made a huge difference to the effectiveness of his ministry.

Bikes for Pastors Wangaratta raises the generosity bar. Our last service was held at Wangaratta Salvation Army on Sunday November 7. We raised $644 for bikes for pastors.

Hospitality and generosity are the two words that best describe CMA’s visit to the Wangaratta Salvation Army. Some months ago CMA member Neville Weeks, who is a member of the church, approached Envoy Robert Bridgfoot with the suggestion that CMA might visit. This was eventually arranged for Sunday November 7 and on that date 11 CMA members, including four Hendersons, met in the car park. Jim Veitch and I rode up from Melbourne on Saturday and Stephen Cleverdon brought Jim’s keyboard and the display gear that has become part of CMA’s public face. We three were offered hospitality at Robert and Cheryl Bridgfoot’s home where, after an excellent dinner and a good yarn, we enjoyed a restful night’s sleep. Sleep was made possible because the ‘one who snores’ was able to be locked away at one end of the house thus ensuring peace for the other two. Next morning 11 CMA members assembled in the church car park to go over the fairly ambitious programme we had been invited to lead. Neville began the service by introducing Harold Major who, as Chairman, described CMA’s ministry. Jo Henderson spoke to the children and Jim, as well as playing all the music, gave the Bikes for Pastors presentation. The offertory came as a complete surprise to us and is the reason I used the word generosity in the opening paragraph. After consulting with the pastor of the other church that had combined with the Salvos for the morning worship it was decided that the entire collection would go to Bikes for Pastors! Subsequently we received over $650, which from a congregation of around 70 people is a truly generous response. (A further generous donation has since been received from someone present.) Stephen led the prayers, I read 2 Timothy 1: 8-12 and preached, focusing on the assurance of salvation as shown in Paul’s “famous last words”. “I know whom I have believed and am convinced that he is able to guard what I have entrusted to him for that day” Then after the enthusiastic singing of “Blessed Assurance” it was outside so the successful ‘win-a-ride’ contestants could get their reward. Neville, Harold, John Cassidy, Butch Henderson and Colin Maxwell made sure it was an experience they would not forget. But it wasn’t over yet! Back into the hall for a lunch which was another example of the hospitality which marks this church. It is to be hoped that we were as much of a blessing to them as they were to us. Barry Huggett

National Scene Happenings CMAAUS - Memorandum of Understanding between CMA Member States!!! At the recent National Run, all member states signed an historic agreement that we would be collectively known as the Christian Motorcyclist’s association of Australia (CMAAUS) It was exciting to hear from the other state delegates regarding their feelings on finally being joined together in an association, and I believe a significant step in being prepared to accept the differences in minor operational matters between states, but being soundly grounded in our common resolve to live lives that are true to Scripture and therefore honouring to God. A copy of this agreement is published elsewhere in this newsletter and I commend it to you for your perusal. Colin Berris & Harold Major.

Harold Major

CMA Australia - CMA International – Memorandum of Understanding!!! Again at the National Run, a second agreement was signed between the Australian state representatives, and Johan Claassens, the Australian Representative of CMA International. This agreement provides us with an affiliation with CMA International, without losing any of the autonomy we enjoy both as individual states, and as a national body. It allows for CMA Australia members to join CMA International, without the requirement for any fees, badges or other identifying insignia, but membership only continues while the individual remains a member of CMA Australia. I appreciate over the years there have been some passionate opinions expressed over this particular matter, and I encourage you to carefully consider the wording of the Agreement printed elsewhere, to see the specifics of the arrangement agreed upon. We are now linked to other like-minded Christian bikers around the world, and I believe it sends a powerful message that we have the ability and mind to join ranks with other men and women outside Australia, who seek to actively put their love of Jesus “out there” to spread the Gospel message to all. I look forward to what God may be preparing us for, in the future. Harold Major.
