The remains of Sebastian Michener, grandfather of Frank Michener of the Monessen hotel, were recovered from the Monongahelia River yesterday after the river had been dragged, where the aged man was in the habit of fishing. Mr. Michener, who was 88 years of age, is one of the oldest men who have spent their entire career along the Monongahelia river. For his age he has been in good health, but very nervous and feeble since the death of his wife eight months ago. He had

12

been fishing daily from the rear of his daughter's lot. he wandered to the river Wedensday at noon. No attention was given the return of the aged resident until supper time when he failed to put in an appearance at the table. A thorough search was made through Fredrickstown for him, and then the fishing plank, whe he had been frequenting for the past week. Friends who had seen him with the rod in his hand, secured hooks and dragged the river at this point, and the body was recovered. It is thought that Mr. Michener either fell asleep and toppled into the river or was leaning over the end of the plank too far and fell in. The river was too swift for him to battle the current although he was an excellent swimmer. His death was a sudden shock to his many acquaintances in the neighborhood and also in Charleroi, where three of his sons live and where he formerly made his home. Washington Reporter Aug 17, 1916; FELL FROM FLOAT AND WAS DROWNED; Body of Sebastian Michener,Aged 89 years, Taken from River at Fredericktown. Special to Reporter: Charleroi, Aug 17 - The body of Sebastian Michener, until about two years ago a well known resident of this place, was found this morning about 1 o'clock in the Monongahela river at Fredericktown. It is presumed that he had gone fishing yesterday afternoon and had falen off the float where he was accustomed to cast his line. He was missed before 6 o'clock last evening and a search was made for him, but it was not successful until the early hour this morning. His cane was found floating in the river and this gave the clue that he had probably been drowned. Mr. Michener, who was 89 years of age, had been making his home with hs daughter, Mrs. S. E. Hill, at Fredericktown. Notwithstanding his pen he liked to fish and had a float on the river bank at Fredericktown, to which he often went. It is thought he probably became dizzy and fell into the river. His body was not far from the float. Mr. Michener had lived practically all his life in the Monongahela valley. He for years was located in the Coal Center and California section, where he drove a meat wagon. For a number of years he had resided at Charleroi, where he was very well known. About two years ago he and his wife went to Fredericktown to live. Mrs. Michener died on February 4 of this year. Mr. Michener leaves these children: E.J. ichener of Pittsburg; C.E., J.E., and S. A. of Charleroi, the latter being a councilman, and Mrs. S. E. Hill of Fredericktow, and Mrs. Gregg, of Missouri. Wash. Co., Washington Reporter Aug 17, 1916. Same article as Observer.

Charleori Mail 1 June 1910: Article about George's return to meat market in area. Charleroi Mail (Charleroi, PA) Dec. 8, 1911, 1:3/4 George L. Michener dies at Noon today. Well known Meat Dealer Expires at his home here from illness developed from Severe attack of Grip: George Lawrence Michiner, aged 45 years, a pioneer of Charleroi and one of the best known residents of this section, died today shortly before 1 o'clock after an illness lasting barely more than two weeks. Coming as a distinct shock to the community where he was a familiar figure his death has cast a shadow of gloom that was keenly felt among the business men and citizens who composed his circle of friends. Mr. Michiner two weeks ago last Tuesday suffered an attack of the grip, but did not consider it dangerous. The attack grew more and more aggravated but not until today was there any thought of danger among his family or friends. Cold had settled in his face and caused a complication which together with exhaustion resulted in death. When the town was in its infancy Mr. Michiner came here and erecting the building on Fallowfield avenue now occupied by Jos. Iroe's barbershop, started a meat market. He conducted this business for some time and went to Arizona. Returning to Donora he was in business there for a while and then went to Swissvale, coming from that point here a year and a half ago. Since that time Mr. Michiner has conducted a meat market on Fallowfield avenue. He would have been 45 years old next March. A widow and two sons Edward S. and George L. Jr., survive. Funeral arrangements had not been made. Dec. 9, 1911 1:1 Funeral Services to be held Monday: The funeral services of George L. Michiner, who died Friday afternoon at his home, 736 Washington avenue will be held Monday morning at 10:30 o'clock, with services at the late home. His body will be taken to Howe cemetery for interment. Dec. 11, 1911, page 3:3: Funeral of George L. Michiner Held at the Late Home: The funeral of George L. Michener who died on Friday afternoon suddenly was held tihs mornign at the late home on Washington avenue. Scores of friends of the deceased attended and paid their last respects to his mortal remains. Interment was in Howe's cemetery. Dec. 12, 1911, page 2:4: Resolutions of Respect. in which we feel a great loss, but bow submissively to His will, therefore Resolved, That the sudden removal of such a life from our midst leaves a vacancy that will be deeply realized by all members of our Circle. Resolved, That with sincere sympathy for the bereaved wife and relatives of the deceased we hereby express our hope that even so great a loss may be over-ruled for good by Him who doeth all things well. Resolved, That a copy of these resolutions be spread upon the minutes, a copy printed in the local paper and a copy forwarded to the bereaved family. Charleroi Circle No. 303, Protected Home Circle.
