Abstract

The larva of Psephiocera modesta is described based on four larvae and seven puparia, collected under the bark of fallen trees in a tropical rain forest at Santa Cabeya Farm, in the city of Cachoeira Paulista, State of Silo Paulo, Brazil, (22°39'54"S - 45°00'34"W, 521 m above sea level). Morphological features of Psephiocera modesta are compared with those of other larvae described by the authors elsewhere. We also present some biological notes.

Introduction Twelve subfamilies of Stratiomyidae occur in the Neotropica1 region, with approximately 1100 described species (WOODLEY2001). Knowledge of larval forms of South American stratiomyids is scanty when compared to what is already known for the other continents. The most recent contributions to the South America larval forms are those OfPUJOL-Luz & XEREZ (1999), XEREZ& PUJOL-Luz(2001) and XEREZet al. (2002). The subfamily Pachygastrinae is represented in the Neotropical region by 54 genera and 136 species (WOODLEY2001), of these 28 genera and 34 species are endemic to Brazil. Of the Brasilian Pachygastrinae only 6 species have the larvae described: Eupachygaster alexanderi (BLANCHARD, 1923), Zabrachia stoichoides (JAMES,1965), Chalcidomorphina aurata(PUJoLLuz & XEREZ,1999), Vittiger schnusei (XEREZ& PUJOL-Luz, 2001), Cosmariomyia argyrosticta and Dactylodeictyes lopesi (XEREZet aI., 2002). Herein, we describe the larva and puparium of Psephiocera modesta (LINDNER)1949 based on four larvae and seven puparia. The larval features used in the description are those presented by, PUJOL-Luz& XEREZ(1999), XEREZ& PUJoL-Luz (2001) and XEREZet al. (2002). The terminology employed in the description follows JAMES(1981) and ROZKOSNY & KOVAC(1994). The studied specimens are deposited in the "Cole
