Design and Technology KS4 - Curriculum Content (At GCSE there are two specifications taught – see below for details.)        

Materials, their properties, processing and applied finishes Modelling and prototyping Control system - inputs, processes, interfaces and outputs for both electrical and mechanical systems A range of components and their properties The Design Process from Task Analysis to Evaluation Social, Cultural, Moral and Environmental Issues Health and Safety Issues Industrial Processes and Manufacture

Knowledge, skills and understanding          

Be able to take a design brief and write a detailed Task Analysis Analyse and evaluate existing products and systems Carry out relevant Research and produce a detailed Specification To develop creative and innovative designs To use a variety of communication techniques including ICT and CAD Develop a chosen design by considering a range of suitable materials and joining methods Plan the detailed manufacturing using appropriate tools, equipment and processes including CAM where appropriate Work accurately and efficiently within time constraints See design as a cyclical process with testing evaluation and modifications to arrive at a final solution Produce a comprehensive evaluation of the final outcome

Assessment Opportunities    

Project outcomes Year 10 1.5 hour End of Year examination Year 11 2 hour Mock examination Year 11 Assessment of Controlled Assessment Project practical and folder

Unit 2 is internally assessed and externally moderated

KS5 Curriculum Content    

Physical and mechanical properties of a broad range of materials and components Design and market Influences Processes and manufacture including CADCAM for a range of materials Finishing of materials and processes

Knowledge, skills and understanding             

Unit 1 concentrates on the detailed knowledge of the above curriculum that is further developed in the Unit 3 synoptic written paper Be able to develop a Design Brief with reference to the client’s needs Write a detailed Task Analysis Analyse and evaluate existing products Carry out relevant primary and secondary Research Develop a detailed Specification in consultation with the client To develop creative and innovative design ideas that meet the specification Develop a chosen design by considering a range of suitable materials and joining methods To use a variety of communication techniques including freehand sketching, ICT and CAD Detail the manufacturing methods using appropriate tools, equipment and processes including CAM where appropriate Plan the making ensuring suitable quality control measures and within time constraints See design as a cyclical process with testing, evaluation and modifications throughout the manufacturing stages to arrive at a final solution Produce a comprehensive, detailed evaluation including client feedback of the final outcome

Assessment Opportunities   
