Mu'mineen Ali Abi Taleb knew it to be his duty to wage war against Aisha, Talha ..... Abu Ya'lee al Mawaslie al Tameemee, Ahmad ibn Ali ibn Al Mathanie (died ...
Did The Messenger of God (S) Predict the Wars of Jamal, Safeen, and Nahrawan? Response: The Messenger of God (S) with the knowledge that was bestowed upon him by God Almighty gave the news about these wars and predicted the occurrences surrounding them. He often times gave Amiral Mu’mineen Ali (A.S.) the order to fight against Aisha, Talha, Zobayr, and Moaawiya. He also at times gave orders to his companions telling them that they had a duty to fight against the nakatheen, the unjust, and the apostates. He at times too, when in the company of his wives would speak to them of the occurrences concerning the battles of Jamal, Safeen and Nahrwan. He warned them to avoid getting involved in these seditious occurrences. This tradition is a clear and absolute proof of Amiral Mu’mineen Ali (A.S.) righteousness and the falsehood of other claimants.

The War of Amiral Mu’mineen Ali (A.S.) Against the Nakatheen, Ghasateen, and the Maragheen was by the order of the Messenger of God (S): According to traditions that are entered from the Ahl Sunnat sources Amiral Mu’mineen Ali Abi Taleb knew it to be his duty to wage war against Aisha, Talha, Zobayr, and Moaawiya; moreover, this duty was placed upon his eminence (A.S.) shoulders by the Prophet of God (S). It was even to the extent that Amiral Mu’mineen Ali (A.S.) felt that not fighting against these individual was considered unbelief. There are many traditions with correct chains of transmission concerning this subject in the books of the Ahl Sunnat related by Amiral Mu’mineen Ali’s (A.S.), Abu Ayub Ansari, Amar ibn Yasir, Abdullah ibn Ma’soud, Khazimeh ibn Thabit Ansari, and Abu Sa’eed Khudree; which some of these traditions we will only point out here in a brief way.

Most of these traditions according to opinion also have no problem with their chain of transmissions; as with the case where Ibn Abdul bar Ghortabee writes concerning this matter the following: .‫ولهذه األخبار طرق صحاح قد ذكرناها فِى موضعها‬ ‫ أَن َّ ُه أمر بقتال‬:‫ي‬ َ ‫ ومن حديث أَبِى أَيُّوب األ َ ْن‬،‫س ُعود‬ ْ ‫ ومن حديث ا ْبن َم‬،‫وروى من حديث على‬ ّ ِ‫صار‬ .‫ والمارقين‬،‫ والقاسطين‬،‫الناكثين‬ ‫ه ُدوا فِى‬ ِ ‫جا‬ َ ‫ « َو‬:‫ وهللا أعلم قوله تعالى‬:‫ يَ ْعنِي‬،‫ َما وجدت إال القتال أو الكفر بما أنزل هللا‬:‫ل‬ َ ‫ أَن َّ ُه َقا‬،‫وروى َع ْن ُه‬ .»‫ج َها ِد ِه‬ ِ ‫ق‬ ِ َّ ‫الل‬ َّ ‫ح‬ َ ‫ه‬

“Furthermore, for these traditions which their line and the chains of their transmissions are correct were taken by us from their original sources; meaning traditions from Ali (A.S.), Ibn Ma’soud, and Abu Ayub al Ansari wherein they relate that his eminence was delegated to fight against the Nakatheen, the Ghasateen, and the Maragheen. The following is narrated from his eminence (A.S.), ‘between me and war with them and blasphemy in connection to them God did reveal that I was at liberty.’ The meaning implicated by his eminence (A.S.) was this Qur’an verse, “Fight in the way God in the most appropriate manner.” ،4‫ ج‬،‫ االستيعاب في معرفة األصحاب‬،)‫هـ‬364‫ يوسف بن عبد هللا بن محمد بن عبد البر النمري (متوفاي‬،‫إبن عبد البر‬ .‫هـ‬1311 ،‫ األولى‬:‫ الطبعة‬،‫ بيروت‬- ‫ دار الجيل‬:‫ ناشر‬،‫ تحقيق علي محمد البجاوي‬،1111 ‫ص‬ Ibn Abdilbar, Yusuf ibn Abdillah ibn Muhammad ibn Abd al Bar al Namary (died 436H), Al Asteeab fe Ma’rafat al Ahsab, Vol. 3, page 1117, research Ali Muhammad al Bajawie, Publisher: Darol al Jill- Beirut, al taba’at, 1412H

The First Group: Traditions that are personally related from Amiral Mu’mineen (A.S.): This tradition is related with numerous chains of transmission in tens of books from among the collection of Ahl Sunnat books; we will here narrate a few of these brief traditions. “It is narrated from Alqameh and Aswad at the time when Abu Ayub came back from Saffeen I hurried to go and see him. I said to him,‘ O’ Abu Ayub! God the Most High holds you so dear that Prophet Muhammad (S) stepped into your house and his camel lay down on the ground beside your home; furthermore, all of this was because of your special position while others remained deprived of the benefit of this status. So what has happen now that makes you place your sword upon your shoulder and fight with those who say “There is no God but God”? (This was not expected from you.)’ Abu Ayub retorted to this sarcasm with the following proverb: ‘The guide of the caravan does not lie to his passengers. In the same way the honored Prophet (S) gave orders to us to fight with three groups who battled against Ali (A.S.) “the Nakatheen”, “the Ghasateen”, and “the Maragon”. We fought against those who spread the flames of war the Nakatheen the followers of Talah and Zoybar. Also we fought against the Ghasateen the followers of Muawiyah and Amro A; moreover, we are now returning from the campaign against them and with the Maragon who cross our path and they lay in wait for us in the plantations and by the river sides we will fight against them too.’”

He then threw his shawl aside and said, ‘I heard from the Messenger of God (S) say, ‘Accompany Ali (A.S.) in the battle and fight.’ ‘I am Khazimat ibn Thabit Ansari.’”

In conclusion these traditions with their credible chains of transmission which can even be claimed as successive have been verified by several methods. Nevertheless these traditions prove that this war was ordered by the Messenger of God on behalf of Amiral Mo’mineen (A.S.) and his friends. Therefore, the circumstance of someone who is considered as the Messenger of God’s (S) companion and given orders to fight against these individuals has become perfectly clear here.

According to Anesheh one should avoid warring with Amiral Mo’mineen (A.S.): A tradition has been found with a correct chain of transmission from the sources of the Ahl Sunnat which state that the Messenger of God (S) was sitting with his wives when he predicted the “Battle of Jamal”. He told them to avoid being present in the battle of Jamal. He specifically spoke to Aeshia saying,“O Hamiyar!, I hope under no circumstances you are that individual.” However, in this circumstances Aisha ignored the Messenger of God’s council and therefore was not grant its value. Her eminence in contradiction to those orders fought against the lawful Caliph of the Messenger of God (S). Ahmad ibn Hanabal writes in his authentic documents,

Of course the same tradition is also narrated with its creditable documentation through Ibn Abbas; likewise Ibn Hajjar Asgalanie wrote in the description of Saheeh Bukhari,

“Zahree says, at that time Aisha, Taleh, and Zoyber left along with seven hundred of the Qoresh; any time Aisha reached a house she would ask the occupants name, until it happened that the dogs of Hoe’ab started barking at her. She then said, ‘Take me out of here; it is not necessary for me to continue this journey. The Messenger of God was right when he dissuaded me and told me, ‘how will you be O’ Hamira’eh at the time when the dogs of Hoe’ab bark at you and the people of Hoe’ab are following you on your journey and they want something from you which is not your right? (If, such a thing happens under no circumstances should you continue your journey.) Abul Ibn Zoyber then said, ‘Isn’t this that same place which the Messenger of God (S) spoke about.’ Abdullah then scouted the area until he found fifty men and made them bear witness and swear that this water was not the water that he imagined to be forbidden. When they had borne witness concerning the water, he accepted their confirmation and continued on his journey until he reached Basra. When the Battle of Jamal began, a camel litter that was made of steel entered the arena. She (Aisha) observed the battle from a hole that had been made in the steel of the camel litter; she said to the man who had hold of the camel’s rein, ‘do you see Ali anywhere?’ That person then said, ‘he is the same person standing with his hands raised toward the sky.’ She looked and then replied, ‘Wow, he looks so much like his brother!!’ The Zebby man said, ‘Whose brother is he?’ Aisha said, ‘The Messenger of God (S).’ That man then replied, ‘I won’t fight someone who is the brother of the Messenger of God;’ he then relinquished the reins of Aisha’s mount and joined Ali Ibn Abi Taleb’s army.”

There is a strange point concerning this tradition, the iron camel litter of Aisha draws special attention, because if Aisha really did not have any intention on fighting then why did she ride in an iron camel litter and want to reach the battle arena? Furthermore, if her intention was to contract a peace with the warring factions of the Muslim community then why did she need an iron camel litter? The story of Aisha’s iron camel litter has also been narrated by numerous other Ahl Sunnat Ulema; among them is Gortabeh Daynawary he writes the following in “ Al Imamat Wal Seeyasat”, ‫فلما أتى عائشة خبر أهل الشام أنهم ردوا بيعة على وأبوا أن يبايعوه أمرت فعمل لها هودج من‬ .‫حديد وجعل فيه موضع عينيها ثم خرجت ومعها الزبير وطلحة وعبد هللا بن الزبير ومحمد بن طلحة‬

“When the news reached Aisha that the people of Damascus had rejected the allegiance with Ali (A.S.) she ordered them to make a camel litter out of iron and that a place for her two eyes to peer out should be taken into consideration when making the litter. She then left while being accompanied by Taleh, Zoyber, Abdullah Zeer, and Muhammad ibn Taleh.”

Doesn’t this narration show that Aisha’s intention to create reconciliation among the members in the Islamic community was instead to fan the flames of rebellion? Rather from day one she also had the intention to fight with Amiral Mo’mineen (A.S.) and stage a rebellion against the Islamic government; moreover, if this was not her intention then why was it necessary for her to have a camel litter made of iron and enter the battlefield. Another tradition the Ahl Sunnat Ulema write that is narrated by Hazifeh in which Hazifeh years before was given the news of the “Battle of Jamel”, Aisha’s movement, and her plans of war alongside his children. When people heard this tradition they were severely shaken and they could bring themselves to believe in the matter.

“It is narrated from Khaythameh ibn Abdar Rahman that we were with Haziefeh and some of us say the following, ‘Narrate for us a tradition that you have heard from the Messenger of God.’ Haziefeh then said, ‘If I tell you the tradition that I heard from the Messenger of God (S) you will stone me.’ We said, ‘Glorified be God! We would we do such a thing?!’ Haziefeh then said,‘ Will you believe me if I tell you that one of your mothers is coming towards you with an army that has numerous soldiers and great strength?’ They said, ‘Glorified be God! Who would believe this?’ Haziefeh then said, ‘Well, your mother Hamiyareh will come towards you so that the unbelievers are driven ahead in such a way that it makes your face fill with worry.’” Hakim Neshboury says after narrating this tradition, .‫جا ُه‬ ‫ط‬ ِ ‫ش ْر‬ ِ ‫ص‬ ٌ ‫ح ِد‬ َ ‫الش ْي‬ َ ْ ‫م ُي‬ َ ِ‫خر‬ َ ‫ح َعلَى‬ َ ‫يث‬ َ ‫هذَا‬ ْ َ‫ َول‬،‫ن‬ ٌ ‫حي‬ َّ ِ ‫خ ْي‬

“It is narrated from Zaid ibn Waheb, that at the time when we surrounded Hazieh he said, ‘How will it be at the time when the relatives of the Prophet (S) rises up against you and you are divided into two groups; Such that one group will draw their swords against another group and they will spill each other’s blood?’ We said, ‘O Aba Abdullah! Really will such an event take place?’ He said, ‘I swear by the one who rightly chose Muhammad that this incident will eventually happen.’ Some of his companions said, ‘O Aba Abdullah! What is our responsibility when such an event like this really takes place?’ He said in reply, ‘your responsibility is to accompany the group of people whom Ali (A.S.) commands and invites and there is no doubt that it is the path of guidance which is the same path of Ali (A.S.) and Ali (A.S.)’s helpers.’” :‫ تحقيق‬،1814‫ ح‬،146‫ ص‬،1 ‫ ج‬،)‫ البحر الزخار (مسند البزار‬،)‫ هـ‬191‫ ابوبكر أحمد بن عمرو بن عبد الخالق (متوفاى‬،‫البزار‬ .‫ هـ‬1349 ،‫ األولى‬:‫ المدينة الطبعة‬،‫ بيروت‬- ‫ مكتبة العلوم والحكم‬،‫ مؤسسة علوم القرآن‬:‫ ناشر‬،‫ محفوظ الرحمن زين هللا‬.‫د‬ Al Bazar, Abu Bakr Ahmad ibn Amrou ibn Abd al Khaliq (died 292H), Al Baharal Zakhar (Mosnad Al Bazar), Vol. 7, page 236, 2810‫ح‬, research: D. I here swear to God it is so incredible because you will fight with him while oppressing him!’ Zoyber then said, ‘Yes, I swear to God! I forgot that I had heard that tradition from the Messenger of God (S) and now I have just recalled it. I swear to God! I won’t fight you.’ Speaking these words he changed his mind concerning the decision he had made and he went back. His son Abdullah then said, ‘Why have you turned away from you initial decision?’ Zoyber said, ‘Ali (A.S.) reminded me of a tradition that I had heard from the Messenger of God (S) in which he said’, ‘you will do battle with Ali (A.S.) while you are oppressing him.’ So I now relinquish fighting with him.’ His son then said to him, ‘did you come to fight and put up a resistance?! (No, rather) you came to arrange a compromise between the people, (you imagine that) God will also help you and that an agreement can be concluded between the people.’ Zoyber then exclaims by saying, ‘I remember that I swore I would not fight against Ali (A.S.)! Abdullah then proposed, ‘(for the expiation of your oath) free your slave boy Jarjees and show a little bit of a delay in making an agreement for a compromise between the people.’ Zoyber agreed to his son’s proposal by showing restraint and freeing his slave boy.
