Our graduates say

There is information that you will find useful on our website:

“I found the MSc Human Nutrition programme very intensive but thoroughly enjoyable giving me a broad nutrition knowledge and nutrition research training. Having entered the course with a strong science background in chemistry this course has opened many doors for me, in particular within the field of nutrition research. On completion of the MSc, I worked in a nutrition research post near London. I am currently in the 2nd year of my PhD within the same research group that I completed my MSc project.” Michelle Clarke MSc Human Nutrition (graduated December 2009)

Masters

Dietetics, Human Nutrition

“I thoroughly enjoyed my time at the University of Ulster, I found the course both challenging and rewarding. I particular enjoyed my final placement whereby I gained practical knowledge that facilitated an easy transition into the working world as a dietitian. In addition to this, experience gained in research and presentations have developed my skill set and confidence. The staff were friendly, approachable and helpful, and I made some great friends along the way.” Mary-T Casserly MSc Dietetics (graduated June 2009) “I started the Postgraduate course in Dietetics upon completion of a PhD in nutrition having a background in biomedical sciences. The course was very enjoyable although fairly intense. What has been most valuable to me personally is the strong emphasis that this University puts on evidence-based practice. Now that I am working as a dietitian in Southampton General Hospital in a split clinical and research post I use both my research and clinical skills that I developed during my time at the University of Ulster.” Paula McGurk PgD Dietetics (graduated June 2010)

About our Human Nutrition Course

This course provides pre-registration training in Dietetics.

This course leads to excellent employment opportunities both within UK and the island of Ireland or abroad. Career prospects are mainly in the National Health Service, food industry, education, research, health promotion, sports nutrition and the media. There are also opportunities for suitably qualified graduates to pursue higher research degrees (PhD) or further taught studies (MSc, MRes, MPhil) at both this University or at other institutions of higher education and research.

Human Nutrition is the scientific study of the foods we eat, the nutrients in foods, the fate of the nutrients when they are eaten and the effect of diet on health and well being. As a graduate nutritionist you will have the skills to elicit, disseminate, and apply knowledge drawn from the relevant sciences to promote an understanding of the effects of diet on human health and well-being.

Entry Requirements for Programmes

Studying Human Nutrition

Registered Dietitians (RDs) are uniquely qualified to translate scientific information about food and nutrition into practical dietary advice in order to treat disease and ill health. The programme is an intensive course designed to enable science graduates to undergo the practical and theoretical training necessary to gain eligibility to practice dietetics. The course provides a scientific base in the study of food and nutrition and the effect of diet and health on well-being. The MSc course also provides research training by developing advanced skills in conducting an independent research project.

Studying Dietetics The two-year programme consists of five semesters. The first year of the course provides study of core modules in human nutrition and dietetics. Students study Nutritional Biochemistry, Applied Nutrition, Research Design & Statistics, Food Science & Microbiology, Public Health Nutrition, Diet and Disease and Professional Practice. Year 2 students undertake two separate approved clinical placements (both 14 weeks). The majority of clinical placements are in approved healthcare settings throughout Northern Ireland although a small number of placements may be in healthcare settings outside Northern Ireland approved for the training of Dietetic students. On successful completion of PgD students can proceed to register for MSc and undertake an independent research project.

Professional Recognition Eligibility to apply for registration with the Health Professions Council (HPC), the Statutory Regulator for Dietitians is obtained on graduation following satisfactory completion of the course, which includes clinical practice placement and subsequent examinations in Year 2. Graduates wishing to work in Republic of Ireland are eligible to apply for validation of their qualification with the Department of Health and Children if they successfully complete the course and are eligible for HPC registration. Graduates who complete the programme and wish to be eligible to apply for registration with the HPC must be able to communicate in English to the standard equivalent to IELTS level 7, with no element below 6.5. Further information regarding the Dietetic profession can be found on the British Dietetic Association web-site www.bda.uk./com

Applicants should normally have a BSc Hons (science based) degree in biochemistry, chemistry, physiology, human biology, food science, nutritional sciences, human nutrition or related science from a recognised institution. Course
