BERGAMO FILM MEETING

32nd edition, 8 - 16 March 2014

DIRK BOGARDE The retrospective of the 32nd edition of Bergamo Film Meeting 24 features films will constitute the large retrospective dedicated by Bergamo Film Meeting to Dirk Bogarde, a diversely talented man: he had been a narrator and a cartoonist, but he liked to simply define himself an actor and he claimed that it was enough to use the eyes (dark and magnetic) and to express what lied behind.

«I love the camera, and she loves me. Well, not always, to tell the truth… but we are still very good friends» (Dirk Bogarde) Born in Hampstead, London on 28th March 1921 with the name of Derek Jules Gaspard Ulric Niven van den Bogarde, from a father of Dutch origin who worked as graphic designer for the «Times» and a Scottish mother who came from a family of artists, the young Dirk had an artistic education which he soon left in order to pursue his passion for acting. His career on the screen can be divided in three periods: the beginning from the end of the 40’s through all the 50’s where he starred as a protagonist of melodrama, war and historical dramas, and noir films; the 60’s where he is the main face for British auteur cinema, from Victim (1961) through the collaboration with Joseph Losey ( The Servant, 1963; King &

Country, 1964; Modesty Blaise, 1966; The Accident, 1967), to many other very important collaborations such as the one with Schlesinger (Darling, 1965); in the end there’s the period of the “continental” auteur cinema with directors like Visconti ( La caduta degli dei, 1969; Morte a Venezia, 1971), Cavani (Il portiere di

notte, 1974), Resnais (Providence, 1977), Fassbinder (Despair, 1978), Tavernier (Daddy Nostalgie, 1990, his last film). In his performances Bogarde has always been recognized for his elegant, precise, fascinating and ambiguous stage presence, sometimes even slightly terrifying and intensely sensual behind the apparent and relaxed detachment; he was able to show a blasée intelligence which was at same time sharped as a knife.
