[email protected] - + 258 82 518 5956 Quisine Queen writes……..What must be the best kept secret in Maputo, is the fact that Hotel Terminus now has a fine dining restaurant called L’Orange, which quietly opened its doors a few months ago. A partner in the business is GT Lundie, chef patron of Orange Restaurant in Nelspruit, and he has a strong influence on the menu which changes every couple of weeks. Managed by the energetic Patricia Camoes, she projects such passion when describing the dishes on the menu, that it becomes difficult to make a choice of what to eat. There is a good selection of starters and salads on offer, including a yummy Gorgonzola Salad with Roasted Nuts, Olives, Crispy Bacon and Avocado, and Smoked Warthog Carpaccio. The roast artichoke risotto with mortadella sausage and Cajun Grilled Prawns with Masala Foam has proved to be a favourite with diners. Main courses are well represented with fish, seafood, pork, beef, lamb, chicken and even vegetarian dishes. We were served a small portion of mushroom foam with a fresh bread roll as a complimentary starter. For mains I had the Stuffed Calamari with Mussels, Prawns and Line Fish, served with a Basil Risotto and Lemon Cream. The calamari disappointed somewhat as we had been told that the portions were very large. My portion was small and the calamari had been pre cooked a few days earlier. However my dining companions raved about the Grilled Fillet with an Oxtail and Mushroom Spring Roll and the Moroccan Lamb Curry. We were beaten by the large portions so declined desserts. However the Warm Apple Crumble with Vanilla Crème Anglaise, is on my list of desserts to try the next time. Service was unobtrusive and it was obvious that the staff have received some training. Our wine was poured for us by our waiter, who kept his eye on our wine glasses. The wine list is the best I have seen so far in Maputo. It has a good selection of mainly South African wines with a few Portuguese wines at the end of the list. The wines are listed by champagnes, sauvignon blancs, chardonnays, chenin blancs, other white blends and roses wines. The reds are divided also by cultivar being cabernet sauvignon, shiraz, pinotage, merlot, pinot noir and a good selection of red blends. The prices are high, but I don’t mind paying to get a decent selection of wines not otherwise available in Mozambique. We had a well chilled bottle of the Haute Cabriere Chardonnay/ Pinot Noir blend, which is a particular favourite of mine. Recently at L’Orange I attended a brandy tasting where six different brandies were tasted with six courses, and a wine tasting with the owner & winemaker of Devon Crest Wines was held on Monday 10th November. Wine tasting dinners will become a regular feature at L’Orange. The chef, Cletos, hails from Zimbabwe, and trained with renowned South African chef Darius de Angeli at his restaurant “Yum” in Johannesburg, and later at “Salt” in White River.
