Exercises are written predominantly in French to reflect the style of the examinations.

Fabien, Faly, Brieuc, Gabi et André parlent du week-end dernier. Ils utilisent le passé composé (the perfect tense).

In this exercise, you need to look at the pictures before the test, to see whether you can remember the words for what is represented in them. In the example, it is a good idea to think about what the three numbers are in the boxes.

It is important to look at the rubric before each picture. In the example, did you know what Julie va au collège… means? If not, it should help you to look at the pictures. The pictures show means of transport, so it is likely that the question is asking about how Julie goes to school.

The following is an example of a grid-filling task that is found at the beginning of the paper.

Exam tip

Some of the questions you meet in the examination are multiple-choice tasks. These questions normally target grades up to E. If you are aiming at grade C or above, you should be able to select the correct answers without difficulty. Before you start, make sure you look closely at the title, the rubric and the specific questions that you are being asked to answer. Work through the sample question below.

The title indicates the content of what you will hear. What vocabulary items will be key to finding the answers? Use the pause time to read carefully through all the questions.

Lee lo que dicen estas personas. ¿Qué dice esta chica?

What does this girl say?

Put a cross

This question is key to finding the right answer. What does se lleva bien con mean? B

(iv) Me parezco a mi madre ……… (v) Soy moreno ………

C

Enrique

Work with a partner. Why is Gloria the right answer to this question? To answer this question you will need to think about words which link to tía. Which person has no brothers or sisters? You’ll get this right if you know your family vocabulary. To answer this question about ‘attitude’, look out for the two statements that contain the link word madre then deduce which of these fits the sentence. Watch out for phrases that denote attitudes.

Think about the vocabulary you have learnt related to personal descriptions.

Make sure that the job you listen for is connected to Maruja’s father. B

No están mal del todo mis padres pero no estoy de acuerdo con la actitud de mi madre. Piensa que tengo la culpa de todo y no es verdad.

Look for phrases in the text related to personal relationships.

(Total for Question: 5 marks)

Note: in the exam paper this question is linked by theme (‘Family’, in this case) with the next question, a short writing task. Be aware that some of the vocabulary in the reading question could be useful when tackling the writing task.

Dia is Muire duit, a Róisín.

The names you have heard so far all begin with ‘l’, ‘n’, ‘r’ or a vowel and the ‘a’ used to address people doesn’t affect these letters. However, when names begin with other letters of the alphabet this ‘a’ changes the sound of the letter by softening it. This is called ‘séimhiú’ (lenition). In writing we show séimhiú by putting ‘h’ after the letter, for example, ‘a Mháire’.
