Basically I got an email one day asking me if I was interested in doing the show as I was doing Gay Rodeo in the states, and that Gay Cowboy thing was a big deal. The official parties kicked off on Friday July 16th with a Welcome Drinks Reception at Novotel London Waterloo - the official Fetish Week London host hotel - and guys came out to mix and mingle and get a sneak preview of which other hot guys would be out this weekend. Fortunately it was discovered that the steam room in question had been awarded four out of five stars by a gay website which recommends places to pull. Suddenly the story had an angle along the lines of “man bites dog.” The shock, horror and anger were fabricated. The novelty was that the steam room of a family swimming pool is so popular with gay men that it has a star rating. Whoever heard of such a thing? Well, actually if you’re a gay man it’s still not such a big deal. But if you’re a Daily Telegraph reader, that seems to be another matter. Subsequently the story was dissected in the letters column of the Islington Gazette, in blogs and Facebook posts. It’s such nonsense that you may think it’s not worth dragging it up again a month later. But it’s a reminder that so much of what we read in the papers is not necessarily “true”, just tailored to grab our attention. Also in this case I’ve got a personal interest. I live locally and I’m a member of the “gay cruising hotspot” itself. And I shouldn’t have put that phrase in quotes because the sauna of the Cally pool in Caledonian Road is indeed a gay cruising hotspot and it has been for at least 15 years. Men come here from all over London and sometimes even farther afield as you tend to meet interesting people here and several of the guys I now socialise with I met at the Cally. What’s happened down the years is that the straight customers have gradually drifted away, leaving the sauna pretty much to us. For those who haven’t been, I ought to point out that it doesn’t have condom dispensers and a sling. The “action” is extremely discreet and, if you weren’t looking for it, you might not even notice it. Of course, every so often a heterosexual wanders in unsuspecting and is a bit surprised. Such a person seems to have been one Adrian Kelly, who told the Islington Gazette that he “complained at the front desk but was told there was nothing staff could do.” After the story broke, I spoke to staff members, who remembered the incident but confirmed that complaints are rare. When they occur, the culprits are told to cool it. I’ve seen this happen once. In 15 years I’ve been aware of perhaps two or three other warnings. The Cally is not Hustlaball. I’m issuing my counter-complaint because the coverage of this non-story has been entirely homophobic in that cunning way that never could be presented to the Press Complaints Commission as homophobia. The front page of the Islington Gazette declared “Website recommends family haunt as a top place for ‘action’” while the Telegraph maintained this distortion of the facts by saying that “Families have protested.” The implication in the headlines is that gay men are so sex-crazed and insensitive that they are groping each other in the Cally swimming pool in front of family groups. This unlikely scenario is encouraged by Kelly himself, who states, “It’s a family pool and you don’t know who might go in there and see something they shouldn’t.” The Gazette found nobody else to substantiate Kelly’s claim of “shocking” misbehaviour and instead asked for a comment from Jason Pollock, a gay man long associated with Pride. He obliged by seeming to agree that gay men were behaving disgracefully in “a family swimming pool.” He added, “It is not right if people are acting like this in a place where there are families and more importantly children around.”

Basing his view on the Gazette report, Time Out’s gay and lesbian editor, Paul Burston, wrote, “I’m with Mr Kelly on this one.” He went on to quote from a piece he wrote for Attitude magazine, “When I see gay men soaping their erections in full view of small children... it makes me cringe.”

In the 1st July issue of the Gazette, Peter Cardy, chief executive officer of Aquaterra Leisure, which runs the Cally and several other leisure centres in Islington, was forced to issue a statement refuting the suggestion that the Cally was no longer “safe” for families. “The public can be reassured,” he wrote, “that the Cally pool remains a safe and wholesome environment for families and individuals to enjoy healthy exercise this summer.” In other words – and I’m sorry to have to say this – gay men are not a threat to children at the Cally pool. Why was it necessary to “reassure” the public of this fact? The “family” factor was introduced deliberately to stir up right-wing indignation. There’s no indication in the stories that Adrian Kelly is a family man and no “families have protested.” Gay men socialise at the Cally and other Aquaterra leisure centres only with each other and in locked rooms to which families have no access. This is no different to gay men meeting in one room of a “family” hotel. I phoned the Islington Gazette’s Duncan Hepburn. He blamed sub-editing for the implication that the whole of the Cally pool is a gay cruising hotspot. (But when I checked with Jason Pollock, he told me, “I simply got a call from the newspaper reporter to ask if I thought it was right that gay sex might be viewed by families at a swimming pool, to which I answered no, of course not!”) Hepburn remains unrepentant about the tone of the story, saying that people, gay or straight, shouldn’t have sex in public. (But in this case it was in a locked room). I expressed surprise that anyone involved in this story was aware of the gay website which rates the Cally so highly. (Adrian Kelly admits that when he got home, he Googled the words “Cally Pool” and “gay” and up came the Cruising Gays site). What made Kelly alert the media over a bit of slap and tickle in a steam room is his business. But the outcome surely isn’t what he intended. Last week the Cally sauna and steam room were full of newcomers looking for “action”, some of them attracted by the publicity, others from the nearby Ironmonger Row baths, which closed recently for restoration. As a matter of interest Cruising Gays also gives this cruising hotspot four out of five stars.
