We are DELIGHTED, CHARMED, OVERJOYED to invite you to celebrate Roald Dahl Day and 50 whipple-scrumptious years of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. 13th September is the birthday of the World’s Number One Storyteller who is read and loved by millions of children (and adults) everywhere. Roald Dahl Day is an annual opportunity to eat gobstoppers galore and in this pack you’ll find Charlie-themed activities and games to enjoy at home, in schools, libraries or bookshops.

So please, do step inside and let the excitement begin . . . But WAIT, before you do, did you know about all the other ways you can celebrate Roald Dahl Day?

In aid of Roald Dahl’s Marvellous Children’s Charity, on 26th September schools will run amok with wondrous Willy Wonkas and Charlie Buckets for the Dahlicious Dress Up Day! Children up and down the land are invited to dress up as their favourite Roald Dahl character and raise oodles of cash for seriously ill children.

Feast your eyes on a world of treats at the Roald Dahl Museum and Story Centre! This great little award-winning museum is situated in Great Missenden where Roald Dahl lived and worked for 36 years. The museum has two fun and fact-packed biographical galleries (one of which now features Roald Dahl’s original Writing Hut) and a fantabulous interactive Story Centre. MAKE A TOP HAT! “MR WONKA was standing all alone just inside the open gates of the factory. And what an extraordinary little man he was! He had a black top hat on his head. He wore a tail coat made of a beautiful plum-coloured velvet. His trousers were bottle green. His gloves were pearly grey. And in one hand he carried a fine gold-topped walking cane.”

YOU WILL NEED: Black card, A2 size Paper plate Purple card/paper Black tissue paper Black paint Paintbrush Scissors Pencil Ruler

Stapler Double-sided tape Strong tape, e.g. parcel tape or gaffer tape Hole puncher Black elastic Hat-brim template Glitter, feathers, sweeties to decorate

TO MAKE THE TOP HAT 1.

Cut a 4cm-wide strip of black card that is long enough to fit round your head. Staple the ends together to make a headband.

2.

Cut a rectangular piece of black card, long enough to fit round your head and approximately 40cm tall. Use double-sided tape to make a cylinder and attach it to your headband. Staple it in place. Cover the staples with strong tape to protect your head.

3.

Using the hat-brim template as a guide, cut four tabs in the centre of the paper plate. Fold the tabs up and attach them to the inside of the hat with strong tape. Cover the brim with black paint and leave to dry.

4.

When the paint is dry, punch small holes in each side of the brim, thread through elastic and tie each end so that the hat stays on!

5.

Decorate your hat however you please! There is a decotation template if you need any help. Finally, wrap a strip of purple paper just above the brim and tuck some crumpled black tissue paper into the top of the hat.

OOMPA-LOOMPA-LYMPICS “Of course they’re real people,” MR WONKA answered. “They’re Oompa-Loompas”

Oompa-Loompas are very small and love nothing as much as the cacao bean.

TO PLAY YOU WILL NEED: 2 teams 2 buckets Lots of whipple-scrumptious chocolates The aim of the game is to collect as many chocolates as possible while pretending to be an Oompa-Loompa by racing on your knees!

1. Each team stands in a line, with a bucket of chocolates a distance in front of them. 2. The two front players must kneel. 3. Race to the bucket and pick up a chocolate – now race back to your team and tag the next player. 4. The winning team is the one to collect the most chocolate first! Pretend to be an Oompa-Loompa to play other games on your knees, like stuck-in-the-mud or a chocolate-egg and spoon race!

THE INVENTING ROOM “This is the most important room in the entire factory!” he said. “All my most secret NEW inventions are cooking and simmering in here!”

Imagine if you were an extraordinary inventor like Mr Willy Wonka! What would you invent? Hot ice-cream for cold days, hair toffee or even an everlasting gobstopper? Draw a picture and describe your new creation!

Once you’ve finished, ask a grown-up to take a photo and send it to Roald Dahl. They could tweet it to @PuffinBooks and @Roald_Dahl, tag us on Facebook or Instagram, or send it to Charlie and the Chocolate Factory 50th, Puffin Books, 80 Strand, London, WCR 0RL.
