BOB Elliott, new Member of the New Zealand Order of Merit in his office at Tokanui Hospital in the late 1980s.

QUEEN’S Service Medal recipient Karen Howard pictured helping run a Te Awamutu Brownie unit.

A lifetime of work in the field of mental health services, with a special affiliation to Maori health, has earned Bob Elliott the title of Member of the New Zealand Order of Merit in the Queen’s Birthday Honours. Mr Elliott has contributed to mental health services in New Zealand since the 1970s. He initially trained as a teacher, but changed his vocation after working at Tokanui as a holioday job. He was co-charge nurse for the Acute Psychiatric Admission Ward at the Tokanui Hospital from 1972-1979 and a founding member of Te Roopu Awhina o Tokanui. In 1983 this group helped establish Whai Ora, the first Maori cultural therapy unit at Tokanui Psychiatric Hospital. He contributed to the development of several subsequent Maori health units in Carrington, Porirua and Kingseat Hospitals.

Mr Elliott presented various works on psychiatric nursing to the Australian Congress of Mental Health Nurses in Adelaide in 1986, Sydney in 1988, Perth in 1990 and at Auckland University in 1992. He was the bi-cultural advisor at Waikato Area Health Board from 1990-1993 and was operational manager for five psychiatric rehabilitation wards from 1993-1996. Mr Elliott was integral to the establishment of Hauora Waikato, one of New Zealand’s first Maori health providers, and served as chairman from 1996-2000. He worked in various clinical and cultural roles with Te Runanga O Kirikiriroa in Hamilton and continues to contribute as an advisor to various Maori, ministerial and specialty advisory groups. Last year he received the Te Ao Maramatanga College of Mental Health Nurses Whetu Kanapa award.

Karen Howard first became involved in Guiding as a teenager when she joined the Girl Guides at Ohakea Airforce Base where her father was an engineer. She has been involved for more than 40 years, and was rewarded with the Queen’s Service Medal for services to Girl Guiding in the Queen’s Birthday Honours. Mrs Howard has been a leader in the New Zealand Girl Guiding movement since 1964. She and her husband Garry came to Te Awamutu about 20 years ago. Mrs Howard has led Girl Guide and Ranger units in the greater Waikato region and has trained adults to become unit leaders. Other roles have included regional outdoor coordinator, youth adviser, support leader and the zone learning and development co-ordinator. She has devoted her time to leading units in small provincial

towns or rural areas where resources aren’t as readily available and currently runs a Ranger unit in Te Awamutu, and helps other leaders from Brownies up. Mrs Howard co-ordinated the Duke of Edinburgh’s Hillary Award for Girl Guides Waikato (2000 to 2003, 2005 to 2007). Under her leadership approximately 100 girls have earned the Queen’s Guide Award, the highest award in Girl Guides, and the Duke of Edinburgh’s Hillary Award Gold Standard. She was the Duke of Edinburgh’s Hillary Award coordinator for The Church College of New Zealand from 1988 to 2002 and 2004 to 2006. She says Guiding was good to her and she enjoys giving something back to her community. Mrs Howard also runs a quilting project, making quilts which are donated to mothers of newborns or to retirement homes. 9249422AA

Best of country kids shown at school event

CONTACTS

I recently had the pleasure of attending the Rural Schools Cross Country day held at Paterangi Primary School. Almost 400 children from eight rural schools participated in what was a fairly gruelling athletic task. A point of the day for me was that I never saw one cellphone, therefore no one texting, and all of the children engaged with

lined the course along with parents and grandparents, to yell and cheer on their school mates and then run over to the finish line to congratulate them, whether they came first or last. Another interesting observation: there was not one overweight child among the runners, demonstrating good healthy, country, outdoor living. The atmosphere created by

the BOT selling homemade fare and fundraising for the school, made for a great country day out thoroughly enjoyed by everyone. It is some years since this country girl was at school, but I see the same values alive and well in today’s families which are the backbone of our economy and future. Congratulations to all of you. each other, sharing conversations, laughter and playful jest on who was going to finish the course. They all sat quietly listening to principal Chris Calver giving instruction for the day’s programme which demonstrated good country manners, still practised in today’s society so ready to criticise our young people. Those waiting for their race,

The reply to me from the council is somewhat disingenuous. That is rural residents pay for septic tank cleaning to the contractor who pays the council for the treatment of this waste for which he has already billed the rural resident. In my book this is known as double dipping. Rates are levied in two parts — general and targeted by ward. I assume the reply stating connected properties pay an extra charge is referring to the targeted rate where the additional charge is levied on connected ratepayers as there is no other provision on the rates notification for an additional charge. I accept that we have to make a contribution to council amenities such as public toilets etc, as covered in the general rate. My next question then is as a non-connected property, why are rural ratepayers being charged the targeted ward rate, which by the way is 7.35 per cent more than the general rate? Are we in effect subsidising the connected users of this service? DAVID EDWARDS

It is good to see mayoral candidates coming forward for the next local body elections. I would like to see the nominations for the position of Mayor come forward quickly so that the ratepayers have good time in which to evaluate their suitability to lead a council which I believe will want to be seen as heading in a new direction. I congratulate Pat Bishop and Dennis Finn for throwing their hats into the ring at this early stage. I also congratulate our present Mayor for apparently having the courage to realise he should call it a day and not seek re-election. Perhaps he has sensed the change in the political wind following the velodrome debacle.

Because it may not have been the amount of ratepayer money pledged to the velodrome so much as the anti-democratic process riding over the ratepayer will, which will now impact on voter considerations, I would like to see potential mayors and councillors state as part of their election platforms how they saw that process regarding the velodrome at that time, and how they now view it with hindsight. I know that the elections are on much wider issues than that one, but no other issue highlights whether a candidate is truly pushing in the new direction, or is just a ‘‘leopard’’ prepared to try and hide its spots to get through the election process. DENNIS PENNEFATHER

Council collaborations already in place Ken George’s latest letter refers to the benefits of the collaboration taking place between Waipa District Council and ‘two other councils’ and indicates that it is most likely the outcome of Council reaction to the protest march. Collaboration among the 12 councils in the Waikato has been in progress for a long time. It started with the incorporation of a shared services company in 2005, Future Proof in 2007 and the Mayoral Forum has

been in existence for years as part of the triennial arrangements with the Regional Council. The protest march took place in mid-way through 2012. Sorry no credits to the writer here. Three key initiatives have been developed by the shared services company — a shared valuation database service to manage our combined rating valuation data, the Waikato regional transportation model and joint contracts for insur-

ance provision. Future Proof is the vehicle for a sub regional growth strategy. The Mayoral Forum provides key benefits through far greater collaboration on big ticket and cross- boundary issues. All of these activities have already yielded significant financial and non financial benefits. JOE SCARAMUZZA Waipa District Councillor

NEW POSITION: Response manager Western Waikato-South Senior Sergeant Dave Simes. BY DEAN TAYLOR As part of the reorganisation of Police resources, former officer in charge of Te Awamutu Police Station, Senior Sergeant Dave Simes, is now in a new role overseeing seven stations. Mr Simes is filling a new role as response manager Western Waikato-South. He is based in the Te Awamutu Station and reports to Area Commander Inspector Paul Carpenter. A similar position for the northern part of the Western Waikato Police region is also to be filled. Mr Simes job is to manage the uniformed Police resources for Te Awamutu, Cambridge, Otorohanga, Te Kuiti, Kawhia, Bennydale and Pio Pio areas.

Each of the first four stations has a sergeant as officer in charge and the last three are sole charge stations. Mr Simes says he is responsible for managing the response to emergency and critical situations, placing resources where needed as quickly as possible. The role also requires him to ensure manpower is utilised as efficiently as possible to cover absences or unusual workloads in any particular area. He is also responsible to ensure front-line officers are actively involved in effective crime prevention. Mr Simes says Police have always had a focus on prevention, but now that resolve s more coordinated and monitored.

He believes a big part of prevention is managing police resources with the best information possible and being proactive with such activities as foot patrols, turning over vehicles, bail checks, checkpoints, licences premises checks etc. His job is to ensure the approach is co-ordinated and making best use of the resources available, including those within the community. Mr Simes says on a personal note the new job is proving enjoyable as he gets to get out and about across the region and interact with more Police and key people in the various communities. He says it is up to him to make a success of the role and use his experience and skills to do the best for all the communities in his region.

Schools urged to step up security as burglars strike Waikato Police investigating a series of burglaries and break-ins of rural and city schools are asking schools to reassess how they secure valuable items while asking neighbours to keep a eye out for any suspicious activity. Western Waikato response manager, Senior Sergeant Dave Simes, says since May 1 there have been 16 schools victim of burglars or had damage caused to buildings. The most recent incident was last Friday. ‘‘Both primary and secondary schools have been targeted by thieves with schools in Te Awamutu, Paterangi, Ohaupo, Raglan, Hamilton, Huntly, Morrinsville, Gordonton, Roto-o-Rangi and Motumaoho falling victim,’’ he says. ‘‘Items stolen include laptop computers, hard-drives, notebooks, cash, jewellery, musical instruments, piping and a shade sail. In eight of the burglaries or break-ins school administrative blocks were targeted

while 12 incidents are recorded as occurring overnight.’’ Mr Simes says while purchasing safes may make access to valuable electronics more difficult, police believe the small inconvenience of securing items such as laptops in a safe is preferable to the loss resulting in the theft of equipment if stolen in a burglary. ‘‘A lot of the schools have taken the precaution of alarming their buildings while a crime prevention partnership as part of Operation SNAP in 2010 saw 275 Waikato schools and education providers issued synthetic DNA marking kits to mark their valuables, so police will certainly be checking any recovered items,’’ says Mr Simes. ‘‘But we would prefer to prevent burglaries of schools and people’s homes from happening in the first place and to do that we need the public’s help. ‘‘If you see something suspicious around a school, home or business,

phone 111 and let police know.’’ Mr Simes says by investing a little time and informing police about things that don’t seem right, people are making an investment not only in their children’s education, but the wellbeing of the community. ‘‘At the end of the day items like those stolen from these schools need to be replaced, placing increased pressure on existing budgets, so it becomes the parents and caregivers who are asked to assist with fundraising to help pay for items. ‘‘By refusing to buy electronics that seem priced at a too-good-to-betrue deal you are removing a market for the thieves to sell their goods. If you see something and do something, like ringing 111, you could prevent your kids from becoming a victim.’’ ■ Anyone with any information on the school burglaries is asked to contact Mr Simes on 07 858 6200, alternatively, information can be left anonymously with Crimestoppers on 0800 555111.

Council staff number up but costs lower Waipa District Council full time staff level has grown by 10 over the past five years, but overall costs are actually lower. A table illustrating the number of full time equivalent staffing units was included in the remuneration and employment policy

report presented to Council at last month’s meeting. In the 2008/09 financial year, Council staff grew to 199.18 full time equivalents (FTEs) after museum staff were taken onto the payroll (previously a grant was made to the Museum Trust

Board). But in that year and the next four the number of actual FTEs has tracked below the number approved by Council (peaking at 17 less last year). After decreasing to 192.30 FTEs in 210/2011, the level climbed to 209.33

last year, but this was due to a decision to carry out more work ‘in house’ rather than employing outside agencies. The lower cost is due to the fact chief executive Garry Dyet overhauled Council’s middle management structure several years ago.

LANCE’S LOT

Take responsibility for your property security Te Awamutu Community Constable Richard Hurrell says a spate of burglaries, thefts from vehicles and unlawful takings of vehicles over recent weeks has highlighted a lack of consciousness about security. Mr Hurrell says in too many instances vehicles or buildings haven’t been left secure and valuable items have been left in plain view. He says the message is simple — lock up your valuables or be in danger of having them stolen. Police say there are many opportunist criminals who will be constantly trying vehicles and buildings

doors to see if they are locked — and taking anything of valuable they can find when they aren’t. Mr Hurrell says quite a few cars have been entered, some quite badly damaged in the process of being entered, having items stolen or in an attempt to steal it. A number of vehicles have also been stolen and many are still not recovered. Burglaries are not confined to any specific areas which also suggest to Police they are often opportunist criminals. Items that are popular because they are easy to carry include flat screen

TVs, laptop computers, phones, tablets etc. He says as well as keeping valuables locked away, a simple deterrent is some sort of security or sensor light. Alarms are also a good deterrent and needed be expensive. Neighbours should keep an eye on each other’s properties. Mr Hurrell says these are easy, commonsense solutions. He also suggest neighbourhoods set up support groups. ■ For more information about Neighbourhood Support contact [email protected]

Leaf clean-up under way Autumn is over and that means it is time to start the clean-up of leaves, as well as other annual tree and plant maintenance. Recently contractors undertook tree shaping on behalf of the New Zealand Transit Authority on State Highway 3 from the northern side of Te Awamutu through to Kihikihi. Waipa District Council has also begun its weekly leaf fall collection in Kihikihi and Te Awamutu. Over the next few weeks council contractors will be out and about on Fridays clearing piles of leaves from the roadside of the streets most affected by leaf fall. The streets included in the leaf collection are Church Street and Whitmore Street in Kihikihi and in Te Awamutu, Taylor Avenue, Christie Avenue, Racecourse Road, Factory Road, College Street, Teasdale Street, Roche Street, Vaile Street, Palmer Street, Young Street, Jackson Street, Eden Avenue, Ascot Place, Turere Lane, Cherry Tree

streets on the leaf fall collection route, excessive leaves will be dealt with as part of the contractors’ routine maintenance programme. The last leaf fall collection in Te Awamutu and Kihikihi

will be on June 28. Also remember that leaves can make great mulch for the garden.s. They can help keep the weeds down while providing nutrients and warming the soil.

New Zealand’s newest community foundation has been established in the Waikato and aims to build up a $300 million fund to be spent just in this region. The Momentum Foundation, now one of 12 community foundations nationwide, has been established to fund large regional projects with intergenerational benefit. Its formation has been driven, in part, by WEL Energy trustees who promised to seek new ways to invest into the community. Other business and community people have also been involved, including other community funders. Chair of trustees Ken Williamson said the Momentum Foundation was part of a growing worldwide movement to pool resources and reinvest them directly back into the communities they come from. The foundation’s immediate focus was on building up a capital fund, he said. It aims to build up $300 million over 30 years with the investment returns from the capital used for large community grants. ‘‘This is a long-term initiative but over time, we believe the Momentum Foundation will be a huge contributor to community development in our region.’’

The foundation hopes to make its first grant in 2014-2015. Mr Williamson said he had ‘‘no idea’’ what it might be for but said it would be something ‘‘our children and grandchildren benefit from’’. ‘‘It’s the large projects that really challenge the region in terms of funding. That’s what we are focused on.’’ Since launching in April, he had been ‘‘humbled’’ by support for the Momentum Foundation from people who see it as a huge opportunity to leverage funds and encourage Waikato-based philanthropy. ‘‘There is huge support for a completely nonpolitical mechanism which allows people and organisations to pool resources and

in doing so, achieve more. We’ve already secured close to $2 million in bequests and we’ve barely got started.’’ WEL Energy Trust chair Mark Ingle said WEL Trust was ‘‘100 per cent supportive’’ of the Momentum Foundation and had provided an $80,000 operating grant to help it get established. WEL Trust would also consider providing an income distribution grant to be held by the Momentum Foundation as capital. It would only go with strict conditions, he said. ‘‘WEL trustees all campaigned on finding new ways to do encourage and support long-term investment in the region. We believe a community foundation like Momentum is absolutely the right vehicle to do this.’’ Mr Williamson said gifts to the Momentum Foundation could be ring-fenced for specific projects or geographical areas if that was what donors wanted. ‘‘It’s all about minimising overheads and working together to achieve more.’’ Momentum Foundation trustees were selected by an independent panel and are Mr Williamson, Annabel Cotton, Matthew Cooper, Leonard Gardner, Neil Richardson, Jon Tanner and Cherry Taylor. None of the trustees is being paid.

Hunter recounts great experiences Waipa district councillor Vern Wilson says he was more of a hoon than a hunter when he first went into the bush during the 1950s. ‘‘Thanks to some sympathetic guidance and early success the hunting bug gradually took over, to the point where work got in the way of hunting.’’ Time in the hills honed his skills and he became a successful trophy hunter and hunting guide. He says hunting has been kind to him over the years. ‘‘Although I achieved the ‘grand slam’ of New Zealand trophies, I never really planned it. ‘‘What means most to me is the comradeship all of the great friends I’ve had the pleasure of sharing a campsite with over the years. Those memories will never fade.’’ Mr Wilson says he has enjoyed many successful hunting trips, both in New Zealand and overseas, but has not compromised the ethics of hunting. ‘‘Of all the heads, none were poached, spot-lighted, helicopter shot or taken behind wire. ‘‘At the end of the day it is how you achieve your goals, not always the outcome.’’ ‘In the modern era, with so many surefire temptations, I’m just so glad that I came from an a time where the calibre of many far outweighed the record book trophies taken under questionable circumstances ‘‘I was lucky being part of hunting before commercialisation changed the sport forever.’’ His book from ‘Hoon to Hunter’ recounts many successful trips, fine people he has met along the way and his

Ohaupo 125th jubilee attraction

Galaxy of rugby stars BY COLIN THORSEN Waikato and Harlequins classic players take time out for a photo shoot (above) after the legends ignited old rivalries in a game heralded as one of the highlights of the Ohaupo Rugby Club’s 125th jubilee celebrations at Queen’s Birthday Weekend. No fewer than 11 former All Blacks, along with South African, French, Japanese and Italian internationals, and a host of Maori All Blacks and NPC players turned out, making it a memorable occasion for the hundreds of spectators who packed both sidelines. Maori Television, TV3 and Grassroots Rugby were there covering the game. Waikato Classics’ Deon Muir said it was an honour to play alongside so many big name players from different eras, like Kevin Putt and Te Awamutu’s Andy Baker, Bill Bartie and Selwyn Hohepa. ‘‘I got a real buzz playing in the company of halfback Kevin Putt. ‘‘He was a real superstar playing for Waikato during their golden era under coach John Mitchell when winning both the championship and Ranfurly Shield.’’ Muir was also pleased to play in the same team as his brother, former Waikato hooker Jamie, for only the second time. ‘‘We’d played one game together previously for Te Awamutu Sports but, due to my professional commitments, it was the first time that we had played together in Waikato colours.’’ Muir said all the players enjoyed the fantastic hospitality of the Ohaupo RFC. ‘‘We were all thrilled to be

part of the club’s celebrations and it was great to mix and mingle with the locals.’’ Muir said the game had a bit of everything — some rough and tough stuff, coupled with some razzle dazzle and some good tries being scored. ‘‘Judging by the crowd feedback, they appreciated us having a bit of fun, clowning around, while at the same time producing a quality game — despite no training run.’’ To mark the milestone for one of the oldest clubs in New Zealand, the Ohaupo senior rugby team played in specially made 125th jubilee ‘‘all black’’ jerseys for their Waikato second division game against Kihikihi on Saturday, won 32-14 by Ohaupo on home turf. The Ohaupo Senior B team also triumphed, beating Tokoroa 20-10. The ‘‘all back’’ jerseys were a replica of the original black jerseys worn by the Ohaupo RFC 125 years ago. The auction raised $18,000 to help offset the cost of staging the weekend’s celebrations. In all, 23 of the 24 jerseys went under auctioneer Peter Andrew’s hammer — the club kept one to be framed for the clubrooms. The No. 8 jersey, worn by Shaun Collins on Saturday, fetched the best price of $1400. Both an autographed Waikato and Harlequins jersey were also auctioned, along with two signed match balls. Ohaupo RFC president, Rodney Fisher said Kihikihi had played their part in the success of the weekend, with three of their junior teams also playing at Ohaupo. Waikato v Harlequins match report and further photos on page 15.

Winter bowls threeway tie Visitors were to the fore in the second winter tournament hosted by Te Awamutu Bowling Club at Victoria Park. Three teams emerged with a maximum four wins, necessitating a countback on points differential. Honours went to Maureen Reed’s Frankton Junction

team with plus 42. The runners-up were Terry Young’s Ohaupo lineup with plus 29. Eddie Hutchings’ Cambridge team had to settle for third, with four wins and plus 19 points differential. The tournament was sponsored by Highfield Country Estate.

Talented students to perform here Students from the Conservatorium of Music of the University of Waikato will be performing in Te Awamutu this weekend. Outstanding talents — tenor Philip Akau, baritones Edward McKnight and Jonathan Eyres and sopranos Chelsea Dolman and Anna Mahon — will feature in Sunday’s concert. Pianists Andrew Leathwick (winner of the 2013 NZ National Concerto Competition) and Cherry Ngan (who was awarded her FTCL Diploma in 2011 at the age of 17 and was a semifinalist in the PACANZ Young Performer of the Year Award in 2010 and 2012), will entertain with sumptuous piano works by Chopin. The overall winner of the 2012 NZ National Woodwind Competition, flautist Lauren Grout will perform solo flute works as well as chamber works with Ngan and outstanding 15-year-old cellist Catherine Kwak, who has already been a prizewinner in the Brahms International Cello Competition in Austria in 2012 (open age-limit) and is now studying in the specialist Soloist Stream at the University of Waikato Conservatorium of Music. Kwak will also perform solo, accompanied by one of New Zealand’s top pianists, Katherine Austin, who is also the piano lecturer at the University of Waikato. Other highlights on the programme include Hillary Scholar violinists Ngaruaroha Martin (who was a finalist in the university’s highly competitive Concerto Competition while still only in her first year at the university) and Amelia Taylor (who was runner-up in the Sydney Concerto Competition while in her second year at Waikato University and is about to head off to participate in the highly selective Aspen Music Summer School in the United States).

The name Miezenbeek is as synonymous with Te Awamutu Football Club as Jones is to Welsh rugby. For nearly five decades, four generations of the Miezenbeek family have been an integral part of the 100-year-old local soccer club, both as players and serving in a plethora of administrative roles. Tony (senior) joined the club in 1965, followed by his sons, Ken, the late Tony, and Michael, and Ken’s daughter and son Amanda and Carl. Amanda’s son Anton and Carl’s son Cullen are now playing in the club’s junior grades. Patron, Ken Miezenbeek and the club’s first life member Fred Amess had the honour of cutting the cake at the centennial dinner at Sky City Casino on Sunday night. Many of the club’s former stars were among the 120 past and current members who marked the milestone at Queen’s Birthday Weekend. Fourteen months of planning finally came to fruition for the likes of club president David Ireland and his hard working jubilee committee. He was thrilled the way the weekend went after so much solid planning for it. ‘‘It was great seeing everyone turning up and joining in,’’ he says. ‘‘That made the work of the committee worthwhile and gave us much pleasure.’’ Several players who had not donned the club colours for one or two decades attended the centennial dinner. Coming back resulted in a reunion atmosphere being generated as many old friendships were renewed. Although the entire weekend was a resounding success, Sunday night’s dinner, in particular, was nostalgic and pride in the ‘‘old club’’ was obvious in every reminiscing group. Six of the club’s seven life members, Fred Amess, Ken Miezenbeek, Claire Patterson, David Hall, David Ireland and

SOCCER club patron Ken Miezenbeek (right) presents Fred Amess with his framed life membership certificate, awarded in 1974, at the centennial dinner at Sky City Casino in Hamilton on Sunday night. See story for further details. Kyle Owens were in attendance. Sadly, Steve Blake was unavailable. A team-mate of Fred Amess in Te Awamutu’s champion team of 1958, Les Oldham, was also in attendance, along with longserving former player John Apeldoorn, 73. Centennial dinner MC, James McOnie proved a big hit with his subtle humour. The former Te Awamutu junior player showed he hadn’t forgotten his grassroots, producing his treasured ‘‘player of the year’’ certificate when coached by Sinclair Watson as an 11-yearold. McOnie was in his element

during an entertaining question and answer session with dinner guests Che Bunce and Danny Hay, both former All Whites. Patron Ken Miezenbeek had the honour of presenting Fred Amess with his life membership certificate for a second time. Originally presented in 1974, the certificate had been lost when taken away to be framed. Fortunately, the certificate was found and framed in time for the centennial function. All those in attendance received a booklet packed with interesting facts, anecdotes and photographs produced to mark the centenary. ■ Continued Page 13

Centennial a ball All over at half time for all involved Te Awamutu’s Federation II soccer team suffered their second defeat of the season and first loss at home going down 3-0 to Tauranga Boys’ College 1st XI. Coach Billy Carter was disappointed that his side made two mistakes that led to goals for the opposition in the first half at Te Awamutu Stadium on Saturday. The College students then scored a stunning longrange goal to effectively kill off the game by halftime. Try as they might in the second half, Te Awamutu

just couldn’t find a way past their well-organised opponents. The men’s reserve side lost 4-1 to Unicol at Anchor Park with Ben Peterson scoring Te Awamutu’s only goal. The Te Awamutu C division team taught their opponents Tokoroa a lesson in the quirkiness of football. Trailing 1-0 since early in the first half, the match looked destined to go the visitors’ way until two goals in the last two minutes saw Te Awamutu snatch victory from the jaws of defeat.

Jennifer Miezenbeek and Claire Patterson were responsible for the initial fact-finding exercise which formed the basis for this book. President David Ireland thanked both the club’s committee and centennial committee and all the club sponsors who were in attendance, Waikato Cakes, Sincerity Drycleaners, McDonald’s Family Restaurant Te Awamutu, Stirling Sports and Printhouse Print of Hamilton. All the men’s and junior soccer teams

played at home on Saturday, with a past versus present women’s game being curtainraiser to the men’s game against Tauranga Boys’ College, won 3-0 by the visitors. Fun activities were arranged for the kids at the Stadium on Sunday morning, including a bouncy castle and blow up bouncy soccer field, followed by the men’s past versus present game in which Che Bunce took the field. Everyone went home happy, having had a centennial ball.

Dave Shute received a cross inside the opponent’s goal area where he calmly controlled the ball and beat the keeper with a shot inside the far post. Then, immediately from the kick off, Te Awamutu won possession and Kyle Owens sent a long ball down the left for the ever young David Ireland to chase and shoot with his first touch, on his left foot, and score the winning goal. The ladies’ team return to C division league action against Cambridge at John Kerkoff Park this week.

Following their latest 28-19 victory over the Crusaders at Waikato Stadium, followed by the bye, the Chiefs sit on 56 points -leading the New Zealand Conference by 10 points and handily placed at the top of the overall ladder going into this week’s bye which brings with it another four points ahead of the three-week international window. The Chiefs next match is not until Friday, June 28 when they tackle the Hurricanes at Waikato Stadium, followed by the Crusaders in Christchurch on Friday, July 5 and the Blues in Auckland on Friday, July 12. Coach Dave Rennie is happy with the team’s current position.

“Eight points from our remaining three games would match our 2012 performance going into the play offs. “We won the NZ Conference and qualified second overall with 64 points, two points behind the

Stormers, ending up with a home final on top of a home semifinal when the Stormers were upset at home by the Sharks.” Rennie says the bye in rounds 16 and 17, followed by the June window for the All Blacks v France test series, could not have come at a better time. “It’s going to give a handful of Stu’s Pick of the Week injured players time to get back in the reckoning, making our selections tougher ... but that’s not a bad problem to have.” Only 1% separates the top two tipsters in Our Panel’s Picks after round 16 in the Super Rugby competition. Robin McGregor improved his success rate to 67% after nailing 5/6 winners this week. His only hiccup was picking the Blues to win. Lance Fielder remains the competition leader on 68% after managing 4/6 winners. The two teams to let him down were the Blues and Cheetahs.

Past masters put on jubilee thriller BY COLIN THORSEN The former greats who turned out for Waikato and Harlequins invitation rugby teams turned on a classic game to mark Ohaupo Rugby Club’s 125th jubilee. It was exhilarating and breathtaking in its approach and, in terms of entertaining, utterly compelling. Both sides threw the ball around, there were some big hits made and some great runs. The first half was tight (19-all) but the Waikato Classics were too strong in the end, starving the Harlequins Classics of the ball for most of the second half to win 43-29 at Ohaupo on Sunday. Stand-out players for Waikato were flanker Marty Holah, No.8 Deon Muir and halfback Kevin Putt who all looked as though they would be quite at home still playing Super rugby. Holah, in particular, was a constant threat and Waikato’s best. Former Waikato and Maori All Black mid-field back Selwyn Hohepa, now in his 50th year, showed admirable fitness to turn out for Waikato Classics 24 hours after playing 80 minutes for Kihikihi against Ohaupo seniors on Saturday. Biggest impact for the Harlequins, among their galaxy of stars, came from ex Auckland NPC prop Kevin Nepia, former All Black No. 8 Aaran Pene and ex Bay of Plenty flanker Wayne Ormond.

Warm applause by the hundreds of spectators showed their appreciation of a thoroughly entertaining spectacle to mark the Ohaupo Rugby Club’s 125th birthday.

Local referee Grant Cotterell played a key role allowing the game to flow at every opportunity. ■ Coverage of the jubilee dinner and more photos will appear in next Tuesday’s publication.

We will now set him for the Northern here later in the year.’’ The race was also a triumph for jockey Cory Perrett, who had scored another all-theway win earlier in the day in the maiden steeplechase on favourite Riviera Star. ‘‘He’s pretty tough, although he didn’t jump as well today as he can, but he just put his head down after each fence and kept going so it was a great effort,’’ he said.‘‘I’m thrilled for the Lund family who have stuck with me and it’s great to be able to win the race for them today.’’

Dearing runs hot

RSN too good for defending champs Henry Morgan Builder RSN is the only unbeaten premier grade netball team after downing the previously unbeaten COGS 1 by 12 goals. RSN established itself as the team to beat as it converted a five-point lead (17-12) at half-time into a commanding 42-30 victory at ASB Stadium, Te Awamutu Events Centre on Thursday night. Over on court two, Bailey Ingham OSC registered its first win with a resounding 46-20 victory over COGS 2. It was close at quarter time

(10-6), but OSC picked up the tempo of the game and pulled away thereafter. Royalans got back on track after last week’s defeat, winning an entertaining game over TAC premiers 39-25. For the second week in a row, Ray White Pirongia fell an agonising two goals short, losing 39-37 to TAS Ecolab. The umpires’ pick for MVP of the night went to TAS Ecolab defender Sharan Singh, who caught their eye with a wonderful series of tips and positional play in a power-

house performance. Singh’s display of ‘excellent skills’ grabbed the umpires’ attention and set her apart. A special mention also goes to the umpires for their efforts on the night and help in selecting the MVP. The promotion-relegation round concludes tonight with TAS Ecolab and Bailey Ingham OSC clashing in the first round alongside top seeds HMB RSN and TAC Premier. In round two, COGS 1 take on Royalans, while COGS 2

SHARAN SINGH meets Ray White Pirongia. Results from these games will determine the final seedings and ultimately who will take part in the challenge game to secure the eighth spot in the top grade for the championship.

Ray Dearing shot a super sub-par 69 off the stick at Stewart Alexander Golf Club. Taking full advantage of the excellent playing conditions, Dearing won the gross in Sunday’s Bowers and Son sponsored scramble. Runner-up was John Dampney with 75 gross. Noel Oakes and Damien Adamski led the stableford section from Mike Kielly, Phil Gibbes and Grant Easton all on 41. The NEC jackpot was not struck and will start on $102 next Sunday. Of the hardy few who braved the weather in Tuesday’s midweek, Grant Easton, Steve Williamson and Rex Mossman with 35 points each were rewarded for their efforts. Ian Coleman and Keith Clarke recorded twos.

TA SPORTS’ prop Fraser Armstrong in the thick of the action CARL FINLAY PHOTO against Hamilton Marist on Saturday. Ecolab Te Awamutu Sports suffered their heaviest defeat of the season going down 41-10 to Waikato premier rugby competition leaders Hamilton Marist. Peter Bain reports that Sports were always on the back foot in Hamilton after conceding 12 points in the opening 10 minutes on Saturday. The visitors enjoyed their best passage of play towards the end of the first half when stringing several phases together leading to a try in the corner to wing Jarred Bayliss. Marist promptly hit back with their third try to lead 17-5

at halftime. Sports spent the majority of the second half on defence as Marist scored a further three converted tries and a penalty. The visitors scored a late consolation try to replacement hooker Hayden Wisnewski on debut. Bain says Sports were guilty of many missed tackles and turnovers which Marist took full advantage of to take maximum points from the game. Sports will be keen to get their season back on track when playing Melville at Albert Park this Saturday.

CINEMA SCENE CLASSIC SHOWPIECE A Star is Born

9238081AA

One of Hollywood’s supreme triumphs. One of the best musicals ever filmed. Magnificent entertainment. A Star is Born is the superb 1954 musical, acclaimed by many as the greatest Hollywood musical ever made. Judy Garland’s intense performance as the main character, probably the finest of her entire career, illuminates the film based upon Moss Hart’s screenplay. The emotionallyintense film also hinted at the reallife troubles and problems in the career of its female star during the film’s making. Garland’s realistic performance reflected the upheavals in her own personal life that led to her death and ironically, this film’s co-star James Mason delivered her funeral’s eulogy in New York in 1969.

THE GREAT GATSBY M THU & FRI 7:35, SAT 7:30, SUN 5:30, MON, TUE & WED 7:40 A wonderful film with a big heart, a funny ride through the saddest of stories. An amazing journey shiningly filmed with two beautiful boys who play their roles outstandingly well, especially the youngest one (he deserved an award for his performance). It has a bit of everything in it; innocence of children, a bit of excitement, sorrow, laughter, unity, first-class scenes of the countryside, a fine story and a good lesson in brotherhood. Obviously and absolutely recommended.

BEKAS M To be a “bekas” meant to have lost all the members of your family in the war, to be completely alone in the world, with no blood ties.

THU 5:55, FRI 10:10 & 5:55, SAT 1:25 & 5:50, SUN 11:25 & 3:50, MON & TUE 5:55, WED 10:10 & 5:55 This is a rare and powerful film that’s epic in scale and reach, yet effortlessly capable of touching every viewer. It depicts a remarkable love story that blossomed amidst the terror of a German concentration camp in 1944 Poland. It’s an immersive, intelligent and altogether rewarding experience, which is highly recommended.
