Lesson Plan for Grade 8 Algebra 1B This plan is good for the 16 teaching days leading up to February Break. January 24-26 Word Problems: Writing function rules. Homework and a quiz. Use a combination of PowerPoint and YouTube in class. Homework is problems out of Pearson. January 29 Absolute Value Inequalities: This is straight drill using Kuta and groupwork. Homework is worksheets. Just a spiral back into this to refresh the idea that there are two solutions. This will be covered again in Algebra 2 and Pre-Calc. February 12 Linear Functions: Spiral back on this. Write an equation in Point-Slope from any input. Use Standard Form and Slope-Intercept. Remember to project the correct answers on the Board at the start of class while they check their work.
January 30-February 16 Polynomials GOAL: Students can add/subtract, multiply polynomials, factor a monomial out of a polynomial, recognize and expand/factor special cases, factor simple polynomials into products of binomials. Stops short of completing the square and the Quadratic Formula, but hopes to include the so-called “British” or “Split-The-Middle” method of factoring. ● How can we leverage our multi-step equation skills to build confidence with polynomial operations and factoring? Recall and highlight distributive property and combining like terms. Remind students of the Distributive Property every time we factor. CONCERNS: ● Multi-step equation weakness (couple of guys still fumble with signs and distributing them over the parentheses. When I do an example on the board, I always stress the sign operation first, then the numbers: “A positive times a negative is a negative…”) ○ Distribute the signs ○ Signed operations ● Combining like terms ● Any summative quiz or test takes an entire period. Try one or two-question pop quizzes at the start of class. OBJECTIVE: BEFORE THE BREAK ● Fluency with polynomial operations: add/subtract, multiply monomials by polynomials, multiply binomials, ecognize and expand/factor special cases, factor polynomial where a = 1 using guess and check. CONNECTED SKILLS: ● GCF, Distributive Property, Combining Like Terms, Exponent rules SUPPORT: ● iXL Alg1: Y.2-5 (monomials); Z.1, 2 (polynomials); I.2 (Like Terms) ● Start each lesson with the Reteaching materials from Pearson ● Have students read and highlight their eBook pages, use the study cards in the eBook
ONE: Adding and Subtracting Polynomials (half day)
Goal = fluency and confidence adding and subtracting x-degree, multi-term polynomials ● This is review. Reinforce Combine Like Terms ● Do not multiply coefficients nor add exponents ● Practice this. Use a combination of Kuta and goFormative. Exit Ticket. ● Homework is a simple worksheet.
TWO: Multiplying and Factoring Polynomials (half day) Goal = 95% consistent accuracy with multiplication; 100% consistent accuracy finding the GCF of a polynomial and rewriting the factored form. ● This is review A. Multiply a Monomial by a Polynomial ● Distributive Property ● Exponent Rules ● Combining Like Terms B. Factor a Monomial out of a Polynomial ● Find the GCF of all terms ● Divide each term by the GCF = “undistribute” ● Rewrite in factored form Homework is a simple worksheet.
Short formative assessment
