Festival focuses on the beauty of the Lemon Lily

T

he 2nd Annual Lemon Lily Festival will be held on July 15, 16, and 17 in the charming village of Idyllwild, mile-high in the San Jacinto Mountain range. More than 3,000 people attended last year’s event to celebrate the restoration of a precious native wildflower, the Lemon Lily. Huell Howser even filmed last year’s festival for his California Gold travel show on KCET. One hundred years ago, thousands of Lemon Lilies (Lilium parryi) lived near streams and wet meadows in Idyllwild. Their beauty and scent attracted visitors from all over Southern California. Unfortunately bulb hunters dug them up and took them off the mountain where they surely died. In a multi-year restoration effort, Idyllwild is cultivating this beautiful native wildflower and restoring it to its original habitat and historical range. The Lemon Lily Festival focuses on the plight of the Lemon Lily so that locals and visitors will take it upon themselves to be

their guardians. A Pioneer Town will take you back to Idyllwild a century ago when the Lemon Lilies proliferated, helping to focus attention on the need for conservation and restoration of this precious wildflower. The Idyllwild Nature Center, a Lemon Lily Viewing Tour, and a high-country hike will provide activities that focus on the natural environment in which the Lemon Lily flourishes. This includes seminars on the Lemon Lily, riparian nature walks to see where this native wildflower lives along Lily Creek, art and crafts focused on the beauty of the lily, and children’s carnival games with a Lemon Lily theme. Throughout Idyllwild there will be music, art, food, nature and fun. Free shuttles will carry you to all Festival venues. Young and old will gain a better appreciation of the importance of protecting the mountain environment. For more information on directions, event schedules and local attractions, visit lemonlilyfestival.com. IER

Classic ‘My Fair Lady’ in Big Bear

C

ATS, The Community Arts Theater Society, will stage the final performances of the classic musical, My Fair Lady, at the Big Bear Lake Performing Arts Center. My Fair Lady stars veteran New York and television actor Robin Field as Henry Higgins, with Jennifer Gail as Eliza Doolittle. Joe Perlow plays Col. Pickering, with Michael McConnell as Freddy. The production showcases a large cast of Big Bear adult and child performers and is directed and choreographed by Karen Sargent Rachels. The musical features such memorable songs as “I Could Have Danced All Night,” Robin Field as Henry “Get Me To The Higgins and Jennifer Gail Church On Time,” as Eliza Doolittle.

Rhythm of Riverside Summer Concert Series

“With A Little Bit of Luck,” “On The Street Where You Live” and “The Rain In Spain.” With book and lyrics by Alan Jay Lerner and music by Frederick Loewe, and adapted from George Bernard Shaw’s Pygmalion, My Fair Lady is considered to be a true classic of musical theater. It won seven Tony Awards and was the launching pad for Julie Andrews’ career. Rancho Cucamonga Community Theatre Presents ‘Annie’ As Tenth Anniversary Production

T

he City of Rancho Cucamonga opens the Rancho Cucamonga Community Theatre’s production of the family favorite Tony Award winning musical Annie, on July 16 at the Lewis Family Playhouse at the Victoria Gardens Cultural Center. The timeless tale of Little Orphan Annie was the first production of the Rancho Cucamonga Community Theatre in the summer of 2001. To celebrate the occasion, Annie is back giving a whole new generation

the chance to experience this classic musical about never giving up hope. Boasting some of Broadway’s most memorable scores, including “It’s the Hard Knock Life,” “Easy Street,” “N.Y.C.” and the ever-optimistic, “Tomorrow,” Annie is a delightful theatrical experience for the entire family. Over 100 hopefuls vied for parts in the production in mid-May. Forty-seven performers were ultimately cast with the title role going to ten-year-old local Jaidyn Young whose July, 2011 Inland Entertainment Review

The Festival Of Arts Returns For Its 79th Season

I

n the summer of 1932, when the country was suffering the ravages of the Great Depression, a group of Laguna Beach artists decided they were going to do something to lift the spirits of those around them (and maybe earn a little bit of muchneeded money). They transformed the main street in Laguna Beach into a virtual outdoor art gallery and the Laguna Beach Festival of Arts was born. Seventy-nine years later, The Festival of Arts — California’s Premier Fine Art Show is consistently named among the top ten art shows in the nation, and it is the flagship event in the art colony culture for which Laguna Beach is now so well known. In 2011 the Festival of Arts is offering 140 of the finest photographers, sculptors, painters, and jewelers the opportunity to display and sell original works of fine art. The beautiful Festival of Arts grounds, with exhibitor spaces arranged elegantly around an inviting lawn area (the Festival Green),

The Bear Valley Hospital Foundation

makes for a warm, classy venue perfect for live entertainment. The Festival’s newly situated Art Center provides a spacious area perfectly suited for visitors to create their own art with the help of artists, which is why the Festival of Arts has become a summer entertainment mecca as well as an art appreciation destination. Enjoy hands-on art activities such as workshops in printmaking and ceramics, plus nightly live entertainment on the green. Special events such as a world-class jazz concert series, cooking demonstrations, youth arts education days, dance performances, a fashion show with an ecologically artistic twist, celebrity events and much, much more will keep you happily coming to the Festival of Arts all summer long. The show is open daily from July 3 through August 31, from 10am to 11:30pm (July 3rd and 4th 10am to 6pm). Festival admission prices are $7 for general admission and $4 for seniors and students. Laguna Beach residents and military personnel with ID receive free admission, as do children under the age of 12. IER

‘On Golden Pond’ Comes To Big Bear T

he popular play On Golden Pond first appeared on Broadway 30 years ago and was later made into an Oscar-winning movie starring Henry Fonda and Katherine Hepburn. It is being redone again this year both in New York City – and in our own Big Bear Lake, starring John Grandi and Elena Peavy at the Big Bear Lake Performing Arts Center the first weekend in August This is the love story of Ethel and Norman Thayer who are returning to their summer home on Golden Pond for the forty-eighth year. He is a retired professor, nearing eighty, with heart palpitations and a failing memory—but still as tart-tongued, observant and eager for life as ever. Ethel, ten years younger, and the perfect foil for Norman, delights in all the small things that have enriched and continue to enrich their long life together. They are visited by their divorced, middle-aged daughter and her dentist fiancé who then go off to Europe, leaving his teenage son behind for the summer. The boy quickly becomes the “grandchild” the elderly couple have longed for, and as Norman revels in taking his ward fishing and thrusting good books at him, he also learns some lessons about modern teenage awareness—and slang—in return. In the end, as the summer wanes so does their brief idyll, and in the final, deeply moving moments of the play, Norman and Ethel are brought even closer together by the incidence of a mild heart attack. Time, they know, is now against them, but the years have been good and perhaps another summer on Golden Pond still awaits. Performances are at 7:30pm on Friday and Saturday nights, August 5 and 6, and a 1:30pm matinee on Sunday, August 7. Tickets are available online at www.citybigbearlake.com, or by calling (909) 866-4970. Net proceeds will go to the Bear Valley Hospital Foundation. IER

The 3rd Annual Ultimate Jazz Festival hosts big name artists By Natasha Ferguson

T

he Ultimate Jazz Festival, produced by Jazz to be Green, a non-profit organization whose goal is to raise awareness about energy efficiency, green environment, and green jobs through the art of jazz, was launched over two years ago and has brought some of the biggest name artists in R&B, Jazz and Soul to the Inland Empire. Well, it’s back — hotter than ever — with lots of changes planned for the 3rd Annual Ultimate Jazz Festival taking place August 6 and 7. Due to the continued growth of the festival with over 7,000 in attendance last year, the festival is relocating to Guasti Regional Park in Ontario, which is a spacious and beautiful venue with over 150 acres including two lakes, shaded trees and ample parking. “We are excited about this year’s festival and felt the move was necessary in order to accommodate the continued expected growth,” said Festival Director Darryl Bundridge. The Ultimate Jazz Festival is known for its flare of uniqueness in bringing together musicians from different genres of music to

one stage including Latin, R&B, Soul, Funk and, of course, Jazz, making it one of the most anticipated summer festivals in the I.E. This year’s festival will feature some hot new artists, as well as a little old school flavor added to the mix. The lineup on Saturday, August 6, will feature: Saxophonist Shilts, Urban Jazz Coalition, Guitarist Nick Colionne, R&B group Pieces of a Dream with Ramona Dunlap, and old school funkateers Cameo. Sunday August 7 is Flutist Althea Rene, Saxophonist Jessy J, Guitarist Jeff Golub, Saxophonist Euge Groove, and the soulful sounds of Keith Sweat. Jazz to be Green is a proud partner with the Lupus Foundation and will contribute a portion of the proceeds from the festival towards this worthy cause. Early bird special tickets are on sale now through June 1. General admission tickets are $30 and VIP $130. VIP tickets give guests an intimate, up close prime seat in a shaded area, VIP parking, a delicious full course gourmet dinner with dessert, and one beverage (beer or wine). Group rates, vendor information and more are available online at www.theultimatejazzfestival.com. IER

roadway musicals, a world stage premiere, country and rock concerts, and the incomparable Debbie Reynolds are among the shows set for the 2011-2012 season at the Sturges Center for the Fine Arts. Presented by the City of San Bernardino Economic Development Agency, nine shows will be presented in the intimate and historic venue, making it one of its biggest seasons ever presented there. Among the show at Sturges Center are the musicals Jekyll and Hyde, I Love you, You’re Perfect, Now Change, The Rocky Horror Picture Show and the world premiere of Robin Hood. In addition to the legendary singer-actress Reynolds, other performers include country singer Mark Chesnutt, the tribute band Journey Unauthorized, the children’s show Junie B. “Jekyll and Hyde” is the first time that the Sturges Center will mount and produce its own show, he said. “We are bringing exciting and exhilarating theater to the community in a whole new light.” Jekyll and Hyde, the Tony Award-nominated musical based on the classic Robert Louis Stevenson novel The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, will be staged for three performances, Oct. 14-16. Set in 19th century London, the musical about the battle between good and evil, tells the story of the brilliant English physician Henry Jekyll, whose passion to discover why man is both good and evil leads to tragic results for himself and for those he loves. The show features music by Frank Wildhorn with lyrics and book by Leslie Bricusse. It ran on Broadway from 1997 to 2001 for 1,543 performances. All performances are at the Sturges Center for the Fine Arts, 780 N. E St., in San Bernardino. Season tickets are $55-$150; single tickets are $19-$45. For more information, call (909) 885-5152. the band Los Lonely Boys – Henry, Ringo and Jojo Garza. In 2003, the trio recorded an album at Willie Nelson’s Pedernales recording studio in Austin, Texas, according to the band’s website. “Heaven” was the group’s first single from the album and it reached number one on the Adult Contemporary chart, and went on to win them a Grammy Award for Best Pop Performance by a Duo or Group with Vocal. The group has gone on to collaborate with the legendary Carlos Santana and lend their voices to world issues such as Amnesty International’s Campaign to Save Darfur. Los Lobos has been performing and releasing albums since the mid-1970s. The band’s first critically acclaimed album came in 1984, “How Will the Wolf Survive,” produced by T-Bone Burnett. Los Lobos worked with Burnett on their next album, “By the Light of the Moon,” released in 1987. Los Lobos became a household name upon recording covers of Ritchie Valens

Blues for the Zoo Concert Moonridge Animal Park holds fundraiser event

D

ue to last year’s success, the Moonridge Animal Park is making their Blues for the Zoo fundraising concert an annual festival event, and this year’s 2nd Annual Blues for the Zoo Concert will take place on Saturday, Aug. 6. The concert will be held at Big Bear Lake’s Swim Beach Outdoor Amphitheater (located at 41220 Park Avenue in Big Bear Lake). Music runs from 3pm to 7pm with gates opening at 1pm. Beach chairs and blankets are welcome for lawn festival-style seating. There will be local artisans, arts and crafts, a selection of fine food, and beverages available on site (no coolers allowed). Don’t forget to bring a swimsuit and children under 10 are free. Headlining this year’s concert will be the Chicago Blues Guitar Shootout with Ronnie Baker Brooks, Lurrie Bell and Larry McCray. They are three of the hottest young guitarists carrying on the Chicago Blues tradition. Also Maria Muldaur and her Red Hot Bluesiana Band will be playing. Maria has been making

24

great Blues and Folk music since her Greenwich Village Days and her “Midnight at the Oasis” heyday. She received her 6th Grammy nomination in 2010. To round out this year’s concert will be Brother Yusef. Yusef is a master solo guitarist, who forges new ground with selfpenned songs he describes as organic deep-fried fattback blues. You can check out this year’s event online at www.moonridgezoo.org/concert. Also you can hear some of the songs and talk on their Facebook site at www.facebook.com/BluesForTheZoo. Tickets are on sale $30 in advance or $35 on the day of the event. In addition you can reserve a room at Northwoods Resort for $69 per night, over half off from their regular prices. Enjoy cool August breezes from Big Bear Lake while listening to a great blues outdoor concert, and at the same time, help to raise funds for the Moonridge Animal Park to buy medical equipment and supplies that will help save wildlife. “T

he Quest for Speed” - Air Racers, will be the subject of the Living History Flying Event hosted by Planes of Fame Air Museum at the Chino Airport on Saturday, August 6. The event will begin at 10am with a seminar describing the impact of air racing on aeronautical development and conclude with a flight demonstration by a Planes of Fame Air Museum warbird. From the earliest days of manned, powered flight until the start of World War II, air racing inspired many of the innovations that helped to advance the design of all types of aircraft. In fact, the most successful air racers of that era were usually more advanced in design and performance than the world’s frontline military combat aircraft. However, the tremendous advances in aviation during World War II, as well as the dramatically increased cost of those developments, relegated air racing to the status of an interesting sport, rather than a cutting edge development program, in the years after World War II. Now essentially centered around a variety of categories ranging from small homebuilt designs to highly-modified World War II combat aircraft and even jets, modern air racing is still the world’s fastest motorsport. With speeds in the unlimited class approaching 500 mph at low level around tight pylon courses, the events are

Quest for Speed challenging and thrilling. An independent, non-profit institution dedicated to preserving the history and artifacts of aviation, Planes of Fame Air Museum was the first permanent air museum in the American West and a pioneer in the concept of restoring historic display aircraft to flying condition. Staffed primarily by a core of dedicated volunteers, the museum supports its operations with donations, admission fees, facilities rentals and

proceeds from the use of its aircraft and artifacts in various productions. Open to the public from 10am until 5pm Sunday through Friday, and from 9am until 5pm on Saturday, general admission is $11, youngsters 5-11 are admitted for $4, and admission is free for accompanied children under five. For more information, call (909) 597-7576 or visit the Planes of Fame Air Museum website at www.planesoffame.org. IER

Also, kids can catch fish, see hawks and falcons up close, talk with modern mountain men, cowboys and win outdoor prizes in the kid’s raffle.
