Rotary 4WD Safari a hit

GENUINE MAZDA PARTS

ntries in this year’s Te Awamutu Rotary Club 4 Wheel Drive Safari held in Pirongia were up by 25%. Organiser David Samuel says it was a pleasing reflection on the extra work put in to raise the profile of the event. Another pleasing aspect was the number of families taking part. Mr Samuel says the event was open to 4WD vehicle enthusiasts of all skill levels wishing to experience an exhilarating Safari, travelling over pristine farmland and bush areas in the Pirongia area and its surrounds. He says entrants came from all across the North Island and feedback has been great. Mr Samuel is grateful to the 22 farm owners who opened their properties, not just for the event itself, but to

E

organisers who have been preparing over a number of months. The nature of the ‘Tag Along’ adventure (designed for ‘shiny’ vehicles) meant

there was plenty of time for participants to stop along the way and take in some of the magnificent scenery. In all the participants covered 170 off-road kilo-

metres over the two days. And to prove how popular it was, winner of the ‘entry fee back’ for registering early used it to register and pay for the 2011 Safari.

Frugal Fords Ford’s Focus on economy ord researchers are sticking to their knitting when it comes to efforts to reduce fuel consumption and emissions — and achieving stunning results. Already their petrol engines are stunning motorists with their ability to use less fuel, while being able to perform. A good example is the Australian four litre straight six, a 195kW powerhouse that can return around 10l/100km. At right is the 1.6 litre Focus — a frugal, but nippy medium sized car. And Ford has confirmed plans to introduce its fuel-sipping Fiesta ECOnetic to the New Zealand market later this year.

F

BY DEAN TAYLOR ord’s commitment to a family of cars for every motorist is evident in the medium sized Focus. The 1.6 hatch from Fairview Motors is the base model — priced right at around $27K — but with more on offer than meets the eye. For a start it is economical, and that is something Ford is taking very seriously and working all the time to improve. The Focus 1.6 engine develops 74kW of power and 150Nm of torque and runs a four speed automatic. The package is good

F

for 7.7l/100km. The package is well proven, the Focus is a very good drive and the engine is nippy enough to make it peasant, but not exactly exciting. Ford does have exciting Focus models — but that’s another story. The base model Focus has a five star Euro NCAP safety rating with ABS brakes, Electronic Brakeforce Distribution and Emergency Brake Assist alongside Dynamic Stability Control. And for the price, some of the features are very good. The CD audio system includes an

When it launches in the third quarter of 2010, the Fiesta ECOnetic will be New Zealand’s most fuel efficient car — the combined cycle fuel consumption of 3.7 litres per 100km being more efficient than rival hybrid models. The Fiesta ECOnetic also produces fewer CO2 emissions than any other conventional, internal combustion engine vehicle, with an official CO2 emission rating of 98 grams per kilometre. Fiesta ECOnetic looks and functions just like a conventional Fiesta, using conventional diesel powertrain technology. It uses a combination of the latest generation common rail diesel powertrain, together with features engineered to reduce fuel consumption and CO2 emissions. With a 40-litre fuel tank, its 3.7L/100km fuel consumption rating equates to more than 1000km per tank. The 1.6-litre Duratorq TDCi engine produces 66kW and 200Nm. It features a Diesel Particulate Filter (DPF) and the car extends the fuel efficiency from the engine by also using low-rolling resistance tyres, a unique transmission and final drive ratio, along with improved aerodynamics through lowered ride height, air deflectors and unique wheel covers. Weight reduction is achieved through the provision of a tyre mobility kit in place of a traditional spare wheel/tyre and a green shift indicator light in the instrument cluster signals the optimal point to change gear to maximise fuel economy.

auxiliary input in the glovebox and Bluetooth, voice activated phone integration — plus steering wheel controls. In New Zealand the Focus only comes in automatic — unless you go mad and want the 2.5litre, five cylinder XR5 Turbo (below) — but to be fair that probably suits its target audience. Ford offers a great range of colours, but leather interior is only available in the XR5. Customer services include three year/ 100,000km warranty and Ford Roadside Assistance, plus handy 20,000km service intervals.

WHEEL ALIGNMENTS Awesome autumn day for Classsic Car Club and Swap Meet now available at TML! T

he annual Waikato Triumph Car C Club’s Classic Car Show and Swap Meet at Waipa Racecourse last Sunday was ‘bigger and better’ than ever. Organisers were rapt with the turn nout of a wide range of vehicles and the interest shown by mo otoring enthusiasts and the general public on a ‘picture postcaard perfect’ autumn day — especially considering that there were two other major motoring events on in the area on the same day. Some of the visiting car clubs had shade structures set up and enjoyed barbecues and a catch up p with other fans of the same makes and same or similar modeels.

LOVE AT FIRST SIGHT: Elija ah Smart (left) of Wellington and Paul Hopkins of Hamilton gaze wistfully at the motor of the ‘72 Valiant Charger for e swap meet. Owner sale on the back of a trailer at the Theo Bongers said he was going g to restore the car, but had never got around to itt. Plenty of interest was being shown in it. Paul Hopkins H offered to swap ‘half a dozen land rove ers’ for it, but Mr Bongers was wary of the trade.

FULL MONTY: John and Colleen Silcock of Cambridge brought hay bales and all with their ‘59 Mk II Zephyr Ute to Sunday’s show. They are pictured with grandson Jakob Silcock. Mr Silcock says he bought the rare ute when he worked in Sydney and brought it back to New Zealand in 2004. ‘‘It was only ever used to go to church and pick up groceries’’. They also had a ‘60 Mk II Zephyr Saloon at the show.

DODGE enthusiasts Murray and Gae Sinclair of Rotorua with their ‘58 Dodge Kingsway Deluxe. This right-hand drive model, like their previous ‘prized vehicle’ (a ‘59 Dodge) were assembled in New Zealand by Todd Motors. The couple say they love the ‘50s era of rock ‘n’ roll and luxury motoring. They used to use their car for weddings and tours, but found other people did not have the same respect for their vehicle as they did — ‘‘They’d pop the baby seat onto the bonnet for photos’’ — so they gave that away. It was their first trip to the show at Te Awamutu and they were thoroughly enjoying it.

LEADING the charge: Alan and Gael Hylton head the pack from the Waitomo Domain in their 1963 TR4. Below is a selection of TR’s lined up for the Concours d’Elegance. prizegiving. Then everyone got back in their cars with their torches for a night drive to the Ruakuri Glowworm Bushwalk. Saturday morning was an early start for the mystery run through Otorohanga, Te Awamutu, Cambridge and Tirau. Participants were in ‘country’ gear for the Saturday dinner at Woodlyn Park. Following dinner and some spot prize presentations for amazing costumes the group was entertained by Billy Black.

Sunday saw the group assemble for a two convoy journey to Te Awamutu, where one half went on a musical themed tour of Te Awamutu that included a visit to the Rose Gardens and Te Awamutu Museum. The other group toured to Chris and Helen Empson’s car collection and another brilliant morning tea, and at mid-morning the groups swapped over. Once all the groups were reunited they left on another ramble to Vilagrad Wineries for lunch and final presentations.

his year’s TR Nationals attracted 60 cars and 111 people to the region for four days of fun and competition. The Thursday start was a new innovation that seemed to prove popular — giving those from further afield the chance to make the trip a leisurely journey and giving them time to unwind before the weekend ‘proper’ got underway. Rally packs, courtesy of Meguaiars were distributed to entrants that included samples of Meguiars product — very handy for those preparing their cars for Concours on Friday. It was a great atmosphere during the ‘noggin and natter’ at the Waitomo Caves Hotel. Friday saw everyone up with the birds giving their cars last minute touch ups prior to the Concours d’Elegance and getting the cars parked on the tiered banking at the Domain. Frank Cleary and Kevin Thorburn and their cracking team were straight in to the judging while the owners did some more socialising, admired the amazing standard of the TR’s on display, talked to the Waitomo Caves schoolchildren that were in awe of the cars, and enjoyed the morning tea tables put on by the local school for us that were literally groaning with the most wonderful home baking, savouries and other delectable treats. Te Awamutu members Barry and Sue Tervit organised a run to Marokopa with a great seafood themed lunch. Many walked out to the sea to enjoy the view and drove up to see the views. Following lunch were stops at the Waterfall, Piripiri Caves and the Natural Bridge for those with energy left. Arriving back at base, there was more socialising until dinner time, followed by Concours
