Independent Lens: When I Rise

from the president You may know that unlike public broadcasters in other countries, American public television and radio stations receive limited government funding and rely on private donations from viewers and listeners for most of their support. At KCTS 9, CPB funding makes up about 12 percent of our budget. That amount is slightly less than the average public broadcaster, but crucial to our ability to continue to serve as a trusted resource for arts, in-depth journalism, history and children’s programming, free of commercials and available to all at no cost. According to the most recent Roper poll, eight out of 10 Americans say that is money “well spent.” As Congress again debates federal funding for public broadcasting, I ask you to take a moment to consider the value of our shared investment. More than half of all Americans use public broadcasting every month. In a national debate over the value and importance of public media, we need your voice to be heard. If you believe that federal funding for public media is money well spent, contact your representative to share your support. If you send an e-mail, copy us at [email protected]. You can also stay on top of the latest developments in Congress through 170 Million Americans for Public Broadcasting, online at 170millionamericans.org. Our thanks to each of you across Washington state and British Columbia whose support of KCTS 9 keeps public broadcasting strong.

Community in the Crossfire: Gangs & Guns A KCTS 9 Special Report Friday, 2/4, at 7:00 p.m. Gang violence is an escalating problem across Washington state. The issue is especially profound in communities in Central and Eastern Washington, where law enforcement officials admit they’re outmanned and outgunned. We talk with police and prosecutors about the proliferation of gangs and guns; examine possible solutions being tried in rural communities dealing with the problem head-on; explore the allure of joining a gang; and hear from gang members themselves about why, once they join, there’s no turning back.
