Something Special Big Band Sunday, January 3 • 1:30pm Take a cup o’ kindness for auld lang syne and join in the celebration as the Something Special Big Band ushers in 2010. With its Basie style, this band is considered one of the finest swing and jazz bands in the New York Metro Area. The group’s infectious rhythm will have you on your feet dancing to the beat! Johnny and June Cash Tribute Sunday, January 10 • 2:00pm Known for their fun and fire onstage, Johnny Cash and June Carter Cash dominated the country duet trend of the late 1960s. Capturing this amazing couple’s charisma, Patty and Rob Walsh will provide a flirty, entertaining afternoon filled with the Cash’s award winning hits.

The Polezhayevs Sunday, January 31 • 2:00pm

Whether performing on one piano or two, the highly original and accomplished pianists Yelena and Vladimir Polezhayev, are sure to amaze and delight you. Their program includes original classical masterworks by Mozart, Beethoven, Schubert, Mendelssohn, as well as original arrangements. This performance provides an extra special treat as Yelena and Vladimir will be joined by their sons Anton, violinist-virtuoso, and winner of international violin competitions, and Simon, double-bass soloist and scholarship student of the Juilliard School. Just as an accurate, readable and durable map is vital when you travel to unfamiliar places, the armed forces during WWII needed accurate maps to prepare for the invasion of Normandy, the passage across Europe and the eventual defeat of Germany. This program will provide an overview of Army mapping during WWII and the experience of one GI who was a part of it.

Sally Shorrock, adjunct professor in the honor’s Music History program and opera instructor at St. Joseph’s College, will present an interactive presentation on the intrigue and breathtaking music of Puccini’s powerful opera, Tosca. Commentary about the opera will give you a greater appreciation of this enduring and heartbreaking tale along with carefully selected and fascinating Youtube clips (with subtitles) of vintage memorable performances. Ms. Shorrock is founder/director of Canta Libre Chamber Ensemble. See page 4 for program listing of the Tosca DVD presentation.

Meet the Filmmaker: MARINO AMORUSO Rocky Marciano: A Life Story Wednesday, January 20 • 6:45pm Program code: SAAMTF1

Long Island native, Marino Amoruso, will present his film, Rocky Marciano: A Life Story. Marciano was the only undefeated heavyweight champion in history. Filmed in Rocky’s hometown of Brockton, Massachusetts, the film features appearances by Rocky’s five siblings and many of his lifelong friends. This Director’s cut includes footage and interviews not seen in the original PBS broadcast. Q&A with the filmmaker will follow the program. (2008) (NR:1:36)

Learn about haiku as a way of life, literary genre and creative hobby. Mankh (Walter E. Harris III), author/editor of Haiku One Breaths anthology, will give a brief history of this shortest poetic form, and discuss how to write haiku and apply the haiku-essence to longer poems. The program will conclude with the author’s critique of participants’ previously written haiku. Copies of Haiku One Breaths will be available for purchase following the program.

Each month a guest poet presents a reading after which the audience is encouraged to share original works at an open mic. This month’s featured reader is Barbara Reiher-Meyers. Ms. Reiher-Meyers is a board member of the Long Island Poetry Collective and The North Sea Poetry Scene. Sounds Familiar is the title of her first book of poems. Her poetry has been published in: L.I. Quarterly, American Dissident, Performance Poetry Association Anthologies, South Shore Monthly, Rogues Scholars, and online. Special thanks to Jeanette Klimszewski and Mankh, members of the Performance Poets Association, for co-hosting this series.

Traditional Chinese medicine asserts that the body’s organs have a broader meaning and application than traditional Western medicine, which suggests that the organs are explained in terms of their anatomical location and their primary physiological function. IN THE GALLERY Donna Correa Mixed Media: Portrait and Landscape Oils Donna Correa began painting in 2007 as a hobby which proved therapeutic during her recovery from breast cancer. SAECFB This is a 4-session class for those with little or no experience using computers.
