OUTCOME ACHIEVED The following are the outcome achieved in the year 2008-2009 1. Bharathidasan University, Tiruchirapali has approved the proposals to introduce B.Sc and M.Sc IT courses and the courses are being offered in the colllge. Annnexure – I 2. The proposal seeking Autonomous status to the College has been submitted to the UGC in May 2008. 3. The proposal seeking the status of College with Potential for Excellence has not been submitted to UGC as there is no slot available for Tamilnadu state. 4. Proposal seeking XI plan development grant has been prepared and the UGC committee is yet to visit Tamilnadu colleges for final approval. 5. Proposals seeking financial support to conduct Seminar in the Department of Mathematics and English were submitted and UGC has also approved both the proposals. 6. A Proposal seeking grants for the construction of a building to house Biological Science departments has been submitted to the UGC. 7. An audiovisual section has been established in the library with 14 computers with multimedia facilities. 8. A block has been constructed exclusively to house the units of NCC.The block was inaugurated by Commodore UN Chitnavis, NM Deputy Director General (DDG), TNP&A Directorate, Chennai. 9. NCC unit –Naval wing has been raised in the college. With the raising of the unit the college has attained a status of the only college in Tamilnadu to have four units of NCC – Army, Armd (sqn), Naval & Airwing representing all the three armed services. 10. Special coaching classes for students appearing for NET examinations have been started. 11. Remedial Coaching classes for SC/ST students and Coaching classes for entry into services for SC/ST students are being continued. 12. The grants received from the UGC under HEPSN scheme are being utilized.

13. Renovation of the college auditorium is being carried out. The construction for an open-air auditorium will begin in June 2009. 14. Two non-teaching staff have been appointed. 15. Courses of IGNOU are being offered to the students under Convergence Scheme. 16. Letters inviting multinational companies for campus recruitment were sent. 17. Self supporting Career oriented programme on Diploma

in

Fabrication

Engineering was introduced with the collaboration of Indian Welding Society and BHELSIA. 32 students are undergoing the programme. 18. A study centre with text books and books for competitive examinations has been established to cater to the students preparing for competitive examinations. The center is being kept open even after the college working hours. Many students are using the center. 19. Many Special Lectures were given under the auspices of Academic Association of each Department. Annexure - II 20. A Finishing School Propgramme for the outgoing UG and PG Students was conducted. 21. Since many vacancies of teaching posts were not approved by the Govt. eight teaching staff members were appointed using the Management’s own resources to avoid cancellation of classes in the last year. Seven of them were allowed to continue this year also. 22. 10 Management Staff appointed in the last year continue to work in the college and the college office has been modernized with computers and other basic amenities. 23. The Fund Allocation for the Department of Physical Education was increased to Rs.1,00,000/-. 24. The two issues of the News Bulletin (Vol 3 No1 and Vol 3 No2) were brought out during the year 2008-2009. (Copies enclosed). 25. Regional Field Unit (RFU) of National Testing Services (NTS) has been established in the college. The Memorandum of Understanding to establish a regional field unit in our College was signed in the year 2007-2008.

26. NCC Air Wing released a Blood Donors Directory Supplement containing 250 names of students with their addresses. 27. Fourteen new Endowments have been created for giving away prizes to meritorious students. Annexure - III 28. Two UGC sponsored National Seminars (Philosophy, Physics), One TNSCST sponsored Workshop (Zoology), one MOEF sponsored Workshop (Botany), One Workshop sponsored by Indian Academy of Science – Bangalore, Indian National Science Academy – New Delhi and the National Academy of Sciences - Allahabad were conducted during this academic year. One State Level Seminar (Economics), one Workshop on Research Methodology in Economics and One-day Seminar on Current Status of Zoological Studies were sponsored by Academy of Higher Education, the society that runs the College. Annexure- IV 29. Five Endowment Lectures were conducted. Annexue- V 30. In appreciation of publishing Research Papers and books and presenting papers in Seminars / Workshops students were awarded cash incentives amounting to Rs. 1000/-.

Part B 1. Activities reflecting the goals and objectives of the institution The motto of the College, “That which liberates is education”, implies liberating the suppressed sections of the society from the evil clutches of communalism, casteism and ignorance through education and helping them to lead a decent life in the society. These objectives are fulfilled by admitting 775 Scheduled Caste and Scheduled Tribe students and 974 Backward Class and Most Backward Class students out of the total 1789 students of the College in the Aided Courses and 211 Scheduled Caste and Scheduled Tribe students and 820 Backward Class and Most Backward Class students out of the total 1082 students in the Un-Aided Courses. UGC approved our proposal to implement the scheme of coaching classes for candidates appearing for NET examination. The coaching classes are being conducted in the College. UGC has renewed the schemes to impart coaching for entry into services for SC and ST students and Remedial coaching classes for SC and ST students. Ramp facilities have been provided to all the buildings in the college for the easy mobility of physically challenged students. There are 33 physically challenged students studying in the college. Lift facility is being constructed in JN block for the benefit of the physically challenged students and special toilets would be constructed for them as well. A self-supporting course on Diploma in Fabrication Engineering has been introduced in collaboration with the Indian Welding Society (IWS) and Bharat Heavy Electricals Small Industries Association (BHELSIA). 32 students are undergoing the programme and many students have expressed their willingness to join the next programme. The Institute of Company Secretraryship has approved our College to conduct coaching classes for candidates appearing for foundation, professional

and

executive programme of ACS. 2. New academic Programmes initiated (UG and PG) B.Sc. (IT) and M.Sc. (IT) Programmes have been introduced. The Curriculum details of the courses are given in Annexure - VI. 3. Innovations in Curricular Design and Transaction As per the guidelines of UGC, Choice Based Credit System was introduced in the academic year 2005-2006.It is continued this year also. In the Choice Based Credit System, Value Based Education - 1 course and Skill Based Courses – 6 Courses have been introduced for all the UG Students.

4. Inter disciplinary Programmes started Both in UG and PG Programme a minmum of two Extra Disiplinary courses or Non-Major Courses are offered to the students. See Annexure - VII. A number of lectures under Academic Associations have been organized and most of the lectures were interdisciplinary in nature. The list of lectures conducted through academic associations is given in Annexure – II. 5. Examination reforms implemented Continuous Internal Assessment (CIA) system has been introduced as a part of CBCS pattern to all Under Graduate courses from the year 2005-2006. Students have to write two CIA tests and to submit 5 Assisgnments in a semester for each paper. A student who has failed in only one subject at the end of the degree programme is allowed to appear for instant examination conducted within a month from the date of publication of result. Transparency in valuation is provided to the students. A student can get a copy of his valued answer script, so that he can decide about the revaluation of the paper. 6. Candidates qualified: NET/SLET/GATE etc.: Data not available. 7. Initiative towards Faculty Development Programme 16 Teachers have participated in the Orientation Course and 13 Teachers have participated in Refresher Courses. 06 teachers have qualified themselves with Ph.D degree. 2. A UGC sponsored Minor Project on Diagnosis of human diseases by serum analysis using immunological tools has been newly implemented in the Department of Zoology. Dr.P.Sivasamy is the Principal Investigator. 3. A UGC Sponsored Minor Project on Investigation on the growth and characterization of NLO active semiorganic crystals has been newly implemented in the Department of Physics. Dr.S.Pari is the Principal Investigator. 4. A UGC Sponsored Minor Project on A study on unorganized labourers in Tiruchirapalli has been newly implemented in the Department of Economics. 25. Computerization of administration and the process of admissions and examination results, issue of certificates The

entire

administration

of

the

college

including

the

activities

of

the

Departments have been computerized. Since the College is affiliated to Bharathidasan University, publishing the results and issue of mark statements are not under our purview. Transfer Certificate, Attendance Certificate, Course Certificate and other certificates are issued using the computerized data bank.

Bharathidasan University

publishes the examinations results through internet. The College allows students to Browse in the Data Center to know the results. A touch screen facility would shortly be installed in the office for the benefit of students to collect the details about Admission, Fees, Examination etc. 26. Increase in the infrastructural facilities An exclusive block to accommodate 4 NCC units of the College has been constructed. A Block to accommodate NSS, Placement Cell, FineArts and Audio Visual and College stores has been constructed. A car has been provided to for his use Principal. An Audio Visual section has been established in the Library with 14 computers with multimedia and internet facilities. Bitumen top road has been laid across the campus. Street lights have been erected on the side of the roads. 40 computers have been purchased. Two LCD Projectors have been purchased. All the department Staff rooms have been renovated and Air Conditioned. Auditorium is being renovated.

A Computer laboratory and instrumentation laboratory have been established in the Department of Chemistry with DST-FIST support. 27. Technology upgradation In the Department of Chemistry a Computer and Sophisticated Instruments laboratories were established with DST-FIST grant. Computer Laboratory A Computer laboratory has been set up in the Department of Chemistry with 13 computers, one printer, one scanner and a web camera with complete networking facility. This computational facility is now very much useful to the faculty as well as students to do modern research projects in the field of computational chemistry and theoretical chemistry. In fact, a few faculty members have initiated research in cheminformatics and bioinformatics area using this facility. This facility is also used for the post-graduate students to study the C programming and molecular modeling concepts with hand-on practical sessions. The internet facility is helpful to students and staff in accessing the essentially unlimited resources of information not conventionally obtainable through other means. Web camera is used for internet chatting, online seminars and exchange of ideas with eminent scientists from various parts of the world. Instruments Laboratory A sophisticated Instruments laboratory has been set up in the Department of Chemistry with an aim of developing the research activities. There are three major equipment pieces of -UV-Visible spectrophotometer interfaced with the Thermostat, FTIR Spectrophotometer and Electrochemical Workstation along with a Digital Balance with four digit accuracy and Sonicator. UV-Visible spectrophotometer is used for the detection of conjugation, geometrical isomers, and functional groups of organic substances, qualitative and quantitative analysis, detection of impurities, molecular weight

determination,

chemical

kinetics

experiments

with

variable

temperature,

charge-transfer transitions, tautomeric equilibirium, recognition of metal, valency and spin, coordination around metal and distortion, strength of ligands and charge transfer between metal and ligand. FT-IR Spectrophotometer is used to characterize the property of both organic and inorganic molecules such as identification of substances, determination of molecular structure, studying the progress of reactions, detection of impurities, isomerism in both organic and inorganic chemistry, high modes of vibration, lower symmetry of complexes, formation of chelates, shape of symmetry of a molecule, presence of water in a sample, measurements of paints and varnishes, examination of old paintings and artifacts and identification of the odour and taste components of food. Electrochemical Workstation is used to follow reaction kinetics and exchange reactions, study the interaction of drug molecules with DNA and enzymes, study the electron transfer properties of organic and inorganic molecules and study the

electro-organic chemistry of pharmaceutical intermediates. Digital Balance is helpful for synthetic experiments and used for the spectral and electrochemical studies that can be carried out with the above instruments. Sonicator is used to induce chemical reactions and to make homogenous solutions for spectral and electrochemical studies. 28. Computer and internet access and training to teachers and students All the Departments have computers. There is a computer laboratory each one for Botany, Chemistry and Geology department. The college has a Computer Laboratory with 100 systems for the use of students of BCA and B.Sc Computer science. Internet facility has been provided to all the Departments, Library, Office and all the HODs’ rooms. 29. 30. Activities and support from the Alumni Association More than 1000 old students have registered in the Alumni Association. A meeting of Alumni was held on 15.02.2009. Thiru.S.Balasubramaniam, Chairman CUB and Thiru.A.Natarajan, Former Director, Doordharsan, Chennai were honoured with Outstanding Alumnus Award in the meeting. In the meeting it has been decided to construct an ultra modern building to house the Library with the support of Alumni. 31 Activities and support from the Parent-Teacher Association Parent –Teacher Association contributed Rs.7,00,000/- towards the payment of salary to the guest lecturers. Invited lectures were arranged by PT association.

32. Health services Under various club activities many programmes on health services have been conducted. The details are given in Annexure XII. The most important achievement in the health services is the release of Blood Donor Directory containing 250 names of students and staff of the college by NCC Air-Wing unit of the college. The copies of the Directory have been distributed to local hospitals. 33. Performance in sports activities The Sports day was celebrated on 19.11.2008. Mr.Mohamed Riyas, an Arjuna Awardee and a Former Olympian was the Chief Guest of the function. Our College Volley Ball team reached the semi finals in both the District Level Inter Collegiate Knock out Tournament and in the Inter Collegiate Competition within Bharathidasan University Area. The team reached quarterfinals in the District Level Competitions in 2 series of matches. Mr.R.Dharmalingam, III B.Com and Mr.B.Nirmal Kumar, II B.Sc. Botany won many

prizes

in

Marathon

Races

conducted

in

various

places

of

Tamil

Nadu.

Mr.R.Saravanan, III B.Sc. Computer Science has won Silver Medal in Power Lifting in the Inter Collegiate Competition in Bharathidasan University area. Activities of the Guidance and Counseling unit The Placement Cell of the college arranges and conducts campus/off-campus recruitment programs regularly to the final year under graduate and post graduate students. Motivation and training programs are also organized for the benefit of the students. The students are made aware of the effective CV presentation methods and are subjected to mock interview practices. The student study centre caters to the needs of aspiring students after the college and library working hours. A special programme to provide the information about various examinations conducted by TNPSC was organized. Functioning of the Placement Cell- A Brief Note The placement cell organizes motivation and training programs for the benefit of the students free of cost. The students are advised to have active e-mail addresses and contact numbers to keep them prepared for the modern interview practices. Before the recruitment programs, they are given training in which they are briefed about the nature of tests, CV writing methods and mock interview practices. Competitive examination oriented books are made available in the college library and the students are directed to make use of this facility. 38. Development Programmes for non-teaching staff As the college office activities have been automated, basic computer training has been provided to all the non-teaching staff. Management has introduced a dress code for non-teaching staff and they are provided with free uniforms. 39. Healthy practices of the institution The College Management has introduced an encouraging system of honoring the Organizing Secretaries of Conferences by presenting them with wristwatches. A system has also been introduced to honor the Staff members who publish Research papers in the refereed Journals with Cash Award. Details are given in Annexure –XIV. All the members of Non-teaching staff are provided with a uniform dress Code. Many endowments have been created to give away awards and prizes annually to outstanding students on the College Day. The College provides space free of cost to Self Help Groups to conduct exhibition and sale of their products for two days every month. The College management gives away additional prizes to the students who win competitions conducted in other colleges. Grants for conducting one-day seminar are provided to the Departments.

The College has attained the status of only College in Tamilnadu to have 4 units of NCC consisting of all the three Armed Services. The four units are Army Wing, Armed (Sqn), Air Wing and Naval Wing.

The Company Secretaries of India and the College have signed a Memorandum of Understanding to conduct coaching classes for the candidates appearing for foundation, executive and professional courses for ACS programme under the Public Private Partnership (PPP) Scheme.

Indian Welding Society (IWS), BHEL Small and Medium Industry Association (BHELSIA) and Our College have signed a Memorandum of Understanding to offer a Diploma Course on Fabrication Engineering jointly. IWS and BHELSIA will prescribe the syllabus and the College drawing faculties from engineering institutions will conduct the classes. IWS and BHELSSIA will absorb all the students who undergo the course for employment in the companies of the members.

LIST OF ENDOWMENT LECTURES ORGANIZED Department of History The ninth G.Venkata Subramanian memorial Endowment Lecture organized by Department of History, National College was delivered at National College on 06.04.09. Dr.K.Rajan, Head, Department of History Pondicherry University was the Chief Guest. He delivered a lecture on the topic The Historical Mapping of South India. In his lecture Dr.K.Rajan explained the features of Historical Atlas of South India. He highlighted the significance of primary sources of historical importance like copper plates, Coins, temple etc., He demonstrated the utilization of data embedded in the Atlas ranging from Paleolithic time down to Vijaya nagar times. The data is arranged in chronological order as well as on the basis of theme to facilitate better understanding of the political social and cultural evolution of mankind. The atlas presents a panoramic view of the spatial distributors of historical material. The atlas is designed to meet the aspirations of the student community and also induce the research scholars for further research in their chosen area. NSS Camp- Unit IV The Unit IV of National Service Scheme, National College, Tiruchirapalli conducted a special camp for its volunteers at Mekkudi Village in Anthanaloor Panchayat union from 20-01-2009 to 26.01.2009. The camping activities were inaugurated by Mrs.Vasantha Durairaj, President of Mekkudi Village in the presence of Mr.S.Durairaj, Chairman, Andha Nallur Union. The volunteers cleaned up the panchayat office and the newly built library, the premises of the Marutha Kaliamman temple and the Kasi Viswanathar temple and removed the weed growth around the library and the public Health Centre. Volunteers also took part in teaching English rhymes to the students of Sri Lakshmi Elementary School. ‘Science for Sanitation’ boards were erected in important places

The Volunteers engaged themselves in removing the thickets on either side of the narrow road connecting Mekkudi to Periya Karuppur, a distance of one kilometer. Mr.Arumugham, addressed the students and interacted with them on acquiring concentration, disciplining of mind and so on. A cultural event was organized in which the NSS Volunteers and the locals participated eagerly. A skit on alcoholism was an instant hit with the audience. Mrs.D.Vasantha, District Maternity officer, spoke on ‘personal hygiene and oral hygiene’. Dr.Nandagopal of Detp. of Botany, National College with video illustrations explained the problems related to diabetes and the medical care. On the last day the volunteers celebrated the Republic Day with the villagers and the school children. Mrs.Vasantha Durairaj, the Panchayat President hoisted the National Flag. The volunteers took out a rally through the narrow lanes raising slogans on health and they watched the Grahma Sabha proceedings. The efforts of the volunteers to open the public toilet kept under lock and key succeeded with the villagers agreeing to do so. Red Ribbon Club The inaugural function of the activities of the Red Ribbon Club, for the year 2008-2009 was held on 10-09-2008. The inaugural address was delivered by Mrs.Geetha, District Manager, TANSAC, Bharathidasan University, she also talked on a 3-hour module to create awareness of AIDS among students. Prof.S.Indira, Programme Officer attended a one-day training programme conducted by Bharathidasan University, at Bishop Heber College on 29-09-2008. The Valedictory function of the activities of the year of Red Ribbon Club was held on 12.03.2009. Dr.K.Anbarasu, Principal presided over the function. Special lectures were

On 05-09-2008, the Club celebrated Teacher’s Day. On 13-09-2008, more than 100 Rotractors participated in the Srirangam Temple cleaning organized by Tourism Development

08-10-2008, the Club rendered its service by demonstrating the hazards of smoking and use of drugs at the Kangaroo Seva Trust, Karumandapam. On 14-11-2008, the Club organized various competitions and gave away prizes to the Young Children at HOPE orphanage. On 02.01.2009, there was a Group Study Exchange Programme. Rotaractors from Mexico visited our club and interacted with our members. They sought details about marriage ceremonies and other domestic functions of us. They also sought details about Hindu deities like Vinayaga, Shiva, Brahma, Vishnu, Lakshmi, Saraswathi etc., A brief account of Ramayana and Mahabharatha was also provided to them. As a service project, our club conducted a programme what next? on 07.02.2009 at S.M.H.Sec. School, Woraiyur. Mr.Suresh Kumar, Director, Employment and Training, Trichy conducted the Programme. More than 100 Higher Secondary students belonging to Six Rural Schools around Trichy participated in the Programme. Mr.Suresh Kumar listed various opportunities for job orientated higher education. Women’s Day Celebrations The International Women’s Day was celebrated on April 4th 2009. Principal Dr.K.Anbarasu, in his presidential address, spoke about the importance of creating gender equality. He pointed out that though women formed 50% of the population, their role in generating income for the families was negligible. He wanted the girl students to shed

Annexure - XII HEALTH SERVICES CONDUCTED IN THE COLLEGE

FREE EYE CHECK UP CAMP The 3 (TN) Air SQN (TECH) NCC in collaboration with Vasan Eye Care Hospital conducted a Free Eye Check Up Camp at the college for the benefit of students, staff and NCC Officials on 29.07.2008. The Camp was presided by Dr. K.Anbarasu, Principal, He exhorted the NCC unit to undertake such socially beneficial programmes on a large scale. Flt. Lt. Dr. Sundhararaman welcomed the gathering. Dr. M.R.S. Ramakrishnan, Eye Surgeon, Dr. Vasan Eye Hospital, Tiruchirapalli inaugurated the Camp. He appreciated the involvement and dedication of NCC cadets to such social causes. Wing Commander B. Biswas commended the cadets for organizing the camp. He showered praises on Vasan Eye Care Hospital for its active co-operation and commitment. He also assured all help to the unit of National College in the conduct of such camps as well as other programmes. CWO Jeyaprakash proposed a vote of thanks. A large number of students, staff and NCC personnel underwent eye check up. Flight Cadet Aiswarya did the compeering. BLOOD DONATION CAMP The Bharathidasan University, Trichy in association with Anna University, Chennai, and Tamilnadu Blood Transfusion Council, conducted a massive blood donation camp within the university limits comprising eight districts at fifty one different centres. In our College, National Service Scheme (NSS) and Youth Red Cross (YRC) organised the programme on 20.02.2009. The programme was inaugurated by the Vice-Principal A.Krishnamoorthy. He asked the students to donate blood to save precious lives which would otherwise be lost. Mr.B.Mathivanan, Notary Public, and Dr.M.Nallathambi of SRM Medical College Hospital, were the two witnesses who monitored the progress of the conduct of the programme. Friends Blood Bank, an authorized blood bank for Indian Red Cross Society, was the recipient of the blood donated by the student volunteers. Thirty volunteers from the nearby Chettinad College of Arts and Science and Three hundred and twelve student donors from both the regular stream and the unaided stream of National College donated their blood enthusiastically as they learnt that their donation could become a record of sorts worthy to find an entry in the Guinness book of records. In all, three hundred and forty two units of blood were collected. The Principal Dr. K.Anbarasu in his closing remarks expressed his deep appreciation of the student donors and hoped that they would make blood donation a habit in their lives. The programme was well organised by the NSS programme officers K.Elango, S.Thirumavalavan, S.Gunasekar, D.E.Benet and YRC coordinator T.Seshasayee.

He advised the students to undergo medical check up periodically to avoid diagnosing diseases at the advanced stage. He urged the students to create awareness among the village people on the importance

Ophthalmologist, Mahathma Eye Hospital, Trichy delivered a lecture on EYE CARE. His lecture dealt with the basic diseases of eyes and the preventive measures of the eye diseases. The visual displays were highly informative, particularly the inventions in the eye operations. He also insisted on compulsory examination of the eyes of the children between the age of 3 and 5 years. He added that the squint eyes can also be corrected at any age. He requested the teachers to find out those students who are not able to see letters on the black board and send them for eye check up immediately. He also advised the people from IT, Diabetics patients and persons of above 40 years to undergo eye check periodically to prevent their eyes from complete blindness. He also recommended anti reflectance glass that can protect the eyes from the rays from computers and vehicle headlights. The cadets from Naval Wing NCC, Staff and students from all the departments, participated in the Awareness Programme and benefited. Cadet.S.Sri Hari, proposed a Vote of thanks. Blood Donation Camp NCC Army Wing and Youth Red Cross Society of our College, Round table No.54 and Trichy Ladies Circle No.33 jointly organized a Blood Donation Camp on 22.08.2008 at our College, Dr.K.Anbarasu, Principal motivated the cadets on the importance of Blood donation and he himself donated a unit of blood. 87 volunteers including the members of the Round table and Ladies Circle donated blood in the camp.
