Notes for upcoming classes: The WV Statewide Annual Master Naturalist meeting and classes will be held August 16, 17 & 18 at Davis & Elkins College in Elkins WV. The weekend events and classes include morning bird walks, electives in Geology, Ferns, Salamanders, Fish Identification, Invasive Plants, Bats, Tools for Naturalists, Medicinal and Edible Plants, Bird walks, Fossils, Bird Banding Station visit & Dolly Sods walk; Maps & Compass Skills, WV Butterfly Atlas Project. Go to www.mnofwv.org to register and see class descriptions and instructor bios! This is a great conference, entire weekend of classes at just $55.00! Please note: The zoo cannot register you for this program; you must go to the website for registration information, lodging etc. The Aquatic Habitats and Wetland Habitats classes (August 31) will be held at West Liberty University, NOT the zoo. Directions for WLU Campus: From either the South entrance or main entrance, continue 2/3rds of the way around the campus circle, past the football field and up a small hill. Immediately to your left while ascending the hill you will see a building with a greenhouse attached to it; this is Arnett Hall. On weekends you can park in any lot; there is a lot at the front of Arnett that is closest to your class room. All lectures will be held in Arnett room 202, first door on the right on the second floor from the entrance with parking. The MonarchWatch Butterfly Project elective (August 10) will begin at the Zoo and end with a field component at Penny’s farm in West Liberty. Directions to Penny’s farm will be given at the class. Please provide us with your e-mail to ensure prompt notification of new classes. Also, please make note of the classes you have registered to attend since future registration forms will be updated versions of the current list. Good Zoo Members can take 10% off the registration fees! (For more information on becoming a zoo member, contact the zoo office at 304-243-4100 or log onto our website at www.oglebayresort.com/goodzoo ). There is a late registration fee of $5 per class when registering less than 6 days prior to the class. Have you already attended Good Zoo Master Naturalist classes? Master Naturalists can re-take any of the classes offered that they have already attended at the Good Zoo free of charge! Just fill out the registration form, and return it to the zoo so we know you are coming! (Based on availability – if the class is filled, we will notify you.) Scholarships are available to those in financial need. Scholarship forms are available on the website at www.oglebay-resort.com/goodzoo . Please dress for the weather, as most classes will involve time outdoors in the field. If you have volunteer hours to turn in, please do so! Both the DNR and the zoo are greatly in need of a record of ALL the hours you put in on MN projects, DNR events, etc. As a reminder, the DNR uses those hours to justify applying for federal funds that support DNR programs. Please don’t be reluctant to turn in your hours, and please don’t under-estimate the true amount of work you contribute. If you need additional volunteer hour forms, please call us at the numbers below. Thanks for your support of the Master Naturalist Program, and for your stewardship of WV’s flora and fauna! If you have any questions, please call Penny Miller at 304-243-4027 or Vickie Markey at 304-243-4068.

He studies population biology and biodiversity of arachnids, primarily spiders and scorpions. Dr Bradley recently published the beautifully illustrated Common Spiders of North America available at Barnes and Noble and Amazon. See class description for ordering info. Of the 4,700 or so spider species in North America, he has documented over 150 species of spiders in his backyard of Delaware, Ohio! A retired associate professor in the Department of Evolution, Ecology, and Organismal Biology at The Ohio State University (OSU), Dr Bradley is currently working on cataloging a collection of some 40,000 spiders into a database at the OSU Museum of Biological Diversity. His hobbies are birding, hiking, photography, beekeeping, illustration and woodworking. Dr. Zachary Loughman (Wetlands Habitats; Terrestrial Habitats; Aquatic Habitats; Insects; and other electives) Zac received a Bachelor of Science degree in biology from West Liberty State College, a Master’s degree in biology from Marshall University, and a Ph. D. in ecology and evolution from Indiana State University. Zac's main interest is astacology; the study of freshwater crayfishes. He has added crayfish state records to multiple state lists and works on projects describing crayfish species, while still working on projects elucidating reptile and amphibian life histories in Appalachia. Zac has worked for Oglebay Institute and West Liberty State College as a Natural History Research Specialist. Zac is currently an assistant professor of Biology at West Liberty University, where he instructs environmental and biological classes for the college.
