Division Director X-Ray Science Advanced Photon Source The X-Ray Science Division (XSD) at Argonne National Laboratory is one of three divisions comprising the Advanced Photon Source (APS), which is the brightest source of x–rays in the western hemisphere and attracts over 3,000 scientific users each year. The division has over 160 employees, the majority of whom operate and carry out research on the 30 x-ray beamlines managed by the Advanced Photon Source. Over 280 publications have been co-authored by XSD scientists in 2007 and over 480 publications from the beamlines operated by XSD. The scientific areas involved include physics, chemistry, materials science and biology (see www.aps.anl.gov for more details). In addition to beamline research and operations, XSD also has groups providing advanced x-ray optics, detectors and administrative support to users. The division director should be internationally recognized in the application of synchrotron radiation, in at least one of the high-impact areas of research at APS, with a relevant PhD and 15-20 years experience. The individual should have demonstrated leadership and management abilities, at least at the level of a group or department, and the ability to articulate a vision for x-ray science at APS. The X-ray Science Director will assist the APS Director in the identification and development of new scientific directions for the facility, and assure efficient and safe operation of current XSD programs. In addition, the X-ray Science Division Director is expected to work with other ANL Division Director and APS Partners outside ANL to integrate their programs into the APS. Argonne National Laboratory is a multi-program laboratory operated by the UChicago Argonne, LLC for the U.S. Department of Energy. Argonne’s site is located about 25 miles southwest of Chicago on a beautiful 1500-acre campus-like environment. Interested candidates should send a detailed CV along with a list of publications, and the names and addresses of three references through the Argonne website at http://www.anl.gov/jobs job search for requisition XSD 313693. Review of applicants will begin December 15, 2008 and will continue until the position is filled. For additional technical information, please contact Dr. Dennis Mills, Chair of the Search Committee at [email protected]. Argonne is an equal opportunity employer, and we value diversity in our workforce.

The new unit will either reinforce existing disciplines in the department or steer the department into new areas of research. The start-up package will include a competitive salary for the unit head (except if the appointee has a transferable salary), modern laboratory facilities, generous start-up funds including running costs and essential major equipment, access to core technical facilities on the campus, technical and secretarial assistance, a 3-year postdoctoral fellowship and help with recruiting staff scientists, grant applications, removal and travel expenses. The application should include a brief introductory letter, Curriculum Vitae and a full list of publications, a description of past and present research activities, the proposed research project and the names of scientists with potential conflicts of interest from whom an evaluation should not be requested. Items 3 and 4 together must not exceed 15 pages of text with 1.5 spacing. Candidates should compile a single pdf file of their complete application and send it by E-mail to the Chair of the Search Committee (Dr. Patrick Trieu-Cuot) at the following E-mail address: [email protected] The closing deadline is December 31 2008. Short-listed candidates will be called for interview in March-April 2009, contract negotiations will begin in June 2009 and the appointment will be made official in December 2009.

For further information about EMBL and research in the Structural and Computational Biology Unit please visit: www.embl.org To apply, please email by Nov. 30, 2008 a CV, three references and a concise description of research interests and future plans quoting ref. no.
