Camden Catholic Announces Hall of Fame Inductees 2014 15 Alumni and Three Teams Form This Year’s Class (Cherry Hill, NJ) March 5, 2014—On Saturday, April 12, 2014 Camden Catholic High School, Cherry Hill, will welcome 15 individual inductees and three teams into its Hall of Fame. Eight of these inductees will be installed in the Emerald Hall of Fame for Academics and Arts, and the remaining seven individuals and three teams will be installed in the Green and White Hall of Fame for Athletics. This is the eighth group to be recognized with the honor since the event began in 2007. “We are pleased to announce the eighth class of inductees into the Camden Catholic High School Hall of Fame for 2014,” said Hall of Fame committee chairperson Jack Wixted ’72. “Each year it is a true pleasure to accept nominations for so many highly-accomplished members of the Camden Catholic family, those who have proven themselves on the athletic fields, on stage and in studios, and in the classroom. These graduates are emblematic of the true spirit of Camden Catholic.” “Camden Catholic prides itself on producing leaders, both in and out of the classroom,” said school president Mary Whipkey. “The annual Hall of Fame event is a representation of the well-rounded students who have walked these hallways, and gone on to great things. It is inspiring for our students to see what is possible as a Camden Catholic graduate,” said Whipkey.
Funds raised at the Hall of Fame event benefit scholarships for current CCHS students who are selected by the Hall of Fame committee based on a submitted essay, leadership qualities, determination, and Camden Catholic spirit. The Hall of Fame induction ceremony will take place on Saturday, April 12, 2014 at 7 p.m. in the Grandi Auditorium at Camden Catholic (300 Cuthbert Road, Cherry Hill, NJ 08002). Jack Carty ’47: longtime reporter, columnist, and editor for the Courier-Post; received many New Jersey Press Association Awards; co-author Flame Dragons of the Korean War (Hearts of Iron); played on resurrected football team and first CCHS baseball team; awarded first Tom Kenney Outstanding Athlete Award in 1946. Joseph Clarke, Sr. ’32 (posthumous): longtime reporter for the Philadelphia Inquirer; became nationally known after he helped break the murder case of a young girl who was found in the woods near Camden High School; received the 1949 Pall Mall Award on radio and television's Big Story; established Clarke Realty; was a Justice of
Peace; a member of the national and Camden County boards of Realtors the Knights of Columbus, Santa Maria Council, Haddon Township, and the American Newspaper Guild; played basketball and baseball at CCHS and he was part of the original Varsity Club which initiated the revival of football and baseball at the school in 1946. Pat Delsi (Pasquale DelSignore) ’52: broadcaster, disk jockey, sportscaster and popular master of ceremonies throughout the Delaware Valley; introduced more than a million records on radio; reporting more than 200,000 newscasts on air; sportscasting more than 5,000 high school, college and professional games; conducting more than 5,000 interviews with people in all walks of life, from comedian Milton Berle to President Gerald Ford; the voice of Drexel basketball for the last 30 years; named Outstanding New Jersey Jaycee, Outstanding Jaycee State Chairman and Sons of Italy Outstanding Young Man of the Year. Charles Grandi ’69: former president and CEO of Fibre-Metal Products Company; career includes time spent at Seton Company Norwood Products, Johnson & Johnson, and Doolan Steel Export; established the Charles & Marie Grandi Foundation which has supported more than 100 students at CCHS in addition to major funding of the arts programs at CCHS; honors graduate of Seton Hall University, Masters in Industrial Psychology from University of Pennsylvania. William Lanza ’66: Vietnam veteran, longtime volunteer for the Atlantic County Veterans Service; advocate for veterans, their dependents and survivors helping them receive benefits owed due to service to their country; received NJ Distinguished Service Medal. Elizabeth Tirrell Mazzeo ‘77: COO, Bloomberg L.P., responsible for Operations, Professional Development, Career Development, and Administration (including Global Facilities, Purchasing, Printing and Mailing Services, Supply Chain, Global Real Estate, Distribution and Asset Management); graduate of Villanova University; Trustee, Villanova University and CCHS; Board of Directors, National Center for Women & Information Technology; instrumental in developing Bloomberg’s trading system and additional trading applications. Dennis McGonigle ’78: COO, SEI Investments; responsible for guiding the efforts of a number of units within the company, including the corporate and insurance markets, as well as SEI’s own financial team; graduate of Scranton University; Board of Directors, Scranton University; Trustee, Kimberton Waldorf School; Board of Directors, Wisdom Technologies Corporation. Robert Viggiano ’54: Courier-Post sports reporter for 49 years; Carino Club President’s Award and Basketball Hall of Fame; South Jersey Coaches Association Recognition Award; South Jersey Baseball Hall of Fame; Camden County Sports Hall of Fame; researched and compiled South Jersey high school sports history from 1900 to the present, cataloguing for the use of schools’ research.
Green and White Hall of Fame for Athletics:
Ralph Bantivoglio ’56 (posthumous): baseball and basketball; established career school marks in basketball for assists and points; was the first Irish player to surpass 1,000 points (finishing with 1,152, a record that stood until 1991); outstanding four-year varsity baseball performer; three-year varsity starter on LaSalle University basketball team; twice was named to the All-Big Five team; served as team captain for two years and in 1959 was named the team’s Most Valuable Player. Joseph DiPietro ’76: football and baseball, former softball coach; led Irish softball team for 16 seasons posting a 279-98 record; won three straight State Parochial A championships (the first New Jersey high school softball coach to do so) and five Olympic Conference titles; 1991 and 1992 teams were named number 1 in South Jersey by the Courier-Post; South Jersey Coaches Association Coach-of-the-Year 1991. Currently in his sixth season as head softball coach of Temple University. Kristina Branca Gozdan ’86: softball; one of the key members of the first Camden Catholic state championship softball team; 19-5 record as a senior, started every game on the mound during the 21-win season; pitched 170 innings and had 134 strikeouts with just 46 walks; selected to the Courier-Post All-South Jersey team. Attended Villanova University where she was a four-year varsity starter, ranks sixth in Villanova history for shutouts and is seventh in complete games. Barbara Patterson ’73: field hockey, basketball and softball; earned 11 varsity letters at CCHS; three-sport athlete and seven varsity letters at Trenton State College (now The College of New Jersey); became a highly respective field hockey official, serving Central Jersey for 18 years, officiated several county, sectional and state championship finals, and later served eight years as a rules interpreter for Central Jersey. John Sigmund ’96: football and basketball; in football, a two-year starter and captain, and All-Parochial team and second team All-South Jersey selections by the Courier-Post; in basketball, a two-year starter and leading scorer for the Irish both seasons, helped them compile a combined 45-9 record and reach the South Jersey
Parochial A finals; finished his basketball career with 1,009 points, his 565 points for the 1996 season ranks seventh on the school’s all-time list. Recruited nationally for football and earned a scholarship to University of Wisconsin where he was a starting tight-end. David Slattery ’82: basketball; Courier-Post All-Parochial as a junior and senior, All-South Jersey and Olympic Conference all-star team member; finished Irish career with 1,097 points in 77 varsity games; a school record of 723 rebounds (now third on list) and his 307 rebounds in 1982 is the second highest single-season total in school history; earned a full scholarship to St. Joseph’s University where he was a starter and one of the tri-captains his senior season as the Hawks captured the first Atlantic 10 championship in the university’s history, and took them to the NCAA Tournament; returned to CCHS to serve as an assistant basketball coach under Jim Crawford for 14 seasons. William Wheeler ’86: football, wrestling, baseball; in football, twice named to the All-Parochial first team by the Courier-Post and first team All-South Jersey linebacker as a senior; three-year varsity baseball player as a first baseman and the cleanup hitter; heavily recruited by colleges for all three sports and accepted a full scholarship to Fordham University where he played football. 1929 Boys Basketball Team: winners of the Trenton Diocesan Championship; traveled to Chicago to compete in the National Catholic Basketball Tournament held at Loyola University; 21-4 record; team members were Johnny Bach, Bill Cahill, Pat O’Brien, Joey Sascowitz, DaveNeil, Larry Crevy, Johnny Flood, Wallace “Rud” Sheehan, “Babe” Slapkowski, Peter Budiak, and Ed Bolton. This group was instrumental in the formation of the Varsity Club, which re-introduced varsity athletics at CCHS in 1946. 1974 Wrestling Team: the only undefeated and untied team in school history; 14-0 record; District 29 State Champion; the first Irish team to finish number one in the Courier-Post South Jersey Top 20 Poll; coached by Warren Bowne, assisted by George Deutsch and Jim DiCicco. 1990 Girls Soccer Team: NJSIAA State Group 3 Co-Champion, South Jersey Group 3 Champion, school’s first Olympic Conference National Division championship in soccer; coached by Mike D’Angelo and led by Jen Mirigliani, Deborah D’Angelo and Hall-of-Famer Erin Garrity, Bridget Kane, Julie Chini, Tina Caputi, Amy Henry, Bridget Garrity, Chris Owens, and Gina Napoli. ###
