1. & 2. Fri Jan 17 through Sun Jan 26 - PHILOMENA - Special 10 Day Return Engagement –Shows every evening at 7:00 pm – 1 hr 38 min – R. Nominated for 3 Golden Globe Awards including Best Film – Drama, Best Actress – Drama – Judi Dench, and Best Screenplay. Based on the 2009 investigative book by BBC correspondent Martin Sixsmith, The Lost Child of Philomena Lee, PHILOMENA focuses on the true story of Philomena Lee (Dench), mother to a boy conceived out of wedlock. He was taken from her to be given up for adoption in the United States. She was forced to sign a contract that wouldn't allow for any sort of inquiry into her son's whereabouts. Years later in England, Lee meets Sixsmith (Steve Coogan), a BBC reporter with whom she decides to find her long-lost son. Here are excerpts from Rex Reed’s review for The New York Observer. “Philomena is not only my favorite film of 2013, but one of the most eloquent, powerful and perfect movies I have ever seen. A focused and triumphant performance by the miraculous Judi Dench keeps the harrowing aspects of a great story in flawless balance. Sensitively directed by Stephen Frears and brilliantly written by costar Steve Coogan and Jeff Pope, it’s a once-in-a-lifetime experience that deserves genuflection. Philomena will revive your faith in movies. One of the heroic masters of the craft and artistry of acting, Judi Dench melts you with her radiance. This is filmmaking at its most refined. I will probably forget most of what happened at the movies in 2013, but I will never forget Philomena.” 3. Sun Feb 2 – ALL IS LOST – 1 hr 46 min – PG-13. Robert Redford is likely to be nominated for the Academy Award for Best Actor for his role as the unnamed man who, while sailing solo in the Indian Ocean, wakes up to find he has collided with a shipping container left floating on the high sea. With his navigation equipment and radio disabled, the man sails unknowingly into the path of a violent storm. Using only a sextant and nautical maps to chart his progress, he is forced to rely on ocean currents to carry him into a shipping lane in hopes of hailing a passing vessel. “In his late seventies, Robert Redford has never held the camera as magnificently as he does in the survival-at-sea thriller All Is Lost. “ –David Edelstein, New York Magazine. 4. Sun Feb 9 – THE GREAT BEAUTY – 2 hrs 22min – Unrated - In Italian with English subtitles. Winner of the Golden Globe for Best Foreign Language Film. There hasn’t been an Italian film like this since Fellini’s “La Dolce Vita.” Journalist Jep Gambardella (the dazzling Toni Servillo) has charmed and seduced his way through the lavish nightlife of Rome for decades. Since the legendary success of his one and only novel, he has been a permanent fixture in the city's literary and social circles, but when his sixty-fifth birthday coincides with a shock from the past, Jep finds himself unexpectedly taking stock of his life, turning his cutting wit on himself and his contemporaries, and looking past the extravagant nightclubs, parties, and cafés to find Rome in all its glory: a timeless landscape of absurd, exquisite beauty. “There's little sense in trying to resist the film's relentless boogie-woogie party vibe, its tumultuous visual banquet, its unpredictable sense of switchblade satire, its fools' parade of modern grotesques, or its river of startling melancholy, turning from a wary trickle to a flash flood by film's end. Director Paolo Sorrentino's vision is the size of Rome itself, and his confidence is dazzling.” –Michael Atkinson, Village Voice. 5.
