More than just an automotive manufacturer, Honda aspires to provide mobility to all – including the elderly and disabled. Its walking assist devices and personal mobility device are designed to do just that.

Flood mitigation contractor Mr. Wan is in the business of containing water surges and overflowing rivers. But when it comes to his car, his elegant, bold beige metallic Accord with sporty Modulo body kit never fail to attract waves of attention.

Honda Malaysia

The best has yet to come GREETINGS TO ALL our customers. With my recent appointment as a Senior Manager of the Service Operations Department at Honda Malaysia, 2009 has indeed proven a very exciting year for me. The same can also be said for Honda Malaysia. First off, I am delighted to announce that Honda Malaysia has succeeded in putting over 200,000 Honda cars on the road since its establishment in 2000. And how we were able to reach this passing mark in Honda Malaysia history was only with your strong support. Rest assured that we are not resting on our laurels though. Rather, your confidence fuels our inspiration and drives us forward in our journey to accomplish our one true goal of providing total satisfying experience. Another proud achievement for us this year was to present Ms. Phua Bong Chin with a short getaway to Pangkor Island for becoming the nation’s 10,000th owner of a 3rd Generation City. In addition, Malaysia’s 100th owner of a 2nd Generation Civic Hybrid, Ms. Michelle Lu and her husband, Mr. Jack Ma, were pleasantly surprised to learn that they are now partners with Honda Malaysia in the fight to save the environment. Together with 99 other Civic Hybrid owners, we hope this combined effort will help reduce harmful carbon emissions by up to 100 tonnes per year. After all, there is no greater cause than protecting Mother Nature to ensure our children have a future where they too can achieve their dreams. While we are certain that plenty of challenges lie ahead, we at Honda Malaysia would like to thank you for your continued support, and will continue to provide you with high-quality service and value the only way we know how – with passion, respect and integrity. Best Regards,

Kentaro Iizuka Senior Manager, Service Operations Department

MS. AIZAN SOFIA AMIN Lecturer in Social Work Programme at Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM)

MR. AHMAD AZUAN TON MOHAMED Flight Instructor in Asia Pacific Flight Training (APFT) Academy at Kota Bahru

When Dreams TAKE FLIGHT Honda Dreams Fund gave two Malaysian youths a chance to turn their dreams into realities. But resilience, sheer passion and good ol’ hard work have made success stories out of them. 04

No mountain TOO HIGH In all that she has done, Aizan Sofia Amin has broken down barriers, whether it is perceptions about surviving cancer and finding happiness, or being disabled and independent. Her determination and love for life has sustained her through studying for her Masters in Counselling Psychology and now as a lecturer in Social Work Programme at Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM). Yet, she claims she is far from reaching her ultimate goals in life. The only daughter in a family of five siblings from Puchong, Selangor, Aizan describes her journey to where she is today as a miracle. At just 14 years old, she was diagnosed with bone cancer. At 16, doctors had to amputate her right leg. She is now free of cancer but it is hard to imagine how the young woman coped with the painful ordeal in her teens. She answers candidly, “The transition from being a normal teenager to one with a disability was difficult. I did not cry when I lost my leg. But I cried dealing with the sudden negative perception from society. I felt belittled in the judgemental eyes of many because I was in a wheelchair or using crutches. It was an emotional period learning to accept the disparity between people’s perception of a normal non-disabled person and one with physical disability.” She does not sound bitter about this apparent injustice. Instead, her value for life can be felt pounding through the echoes of her small room, where she works. “It does not stop me from going out. It annoys me when people ask about my disability and they respond by saying, ‘Oh, what a pity’. I can drive. I still do my groceries and go shopping. Sometimes, I volunteer with MAKNA, the IRM (Islamic Relief Malaysia) and Wheelchair Tennis Malaysia.” It is this spirit of volunteerism that gives her most pleasure. “While pursuing my Master’s, I was steadfast in becoming a counsellor because I wanted to make a difference. In my role as a lecturer now, I have found ways to reach out to my students and instil in them a passion for volunteering. It made me realise that I can achieve my goal to help others in more ways,” she confesses. Through her volunteering and counselling experiences, she had the opportunity to meet people with different backgrounds and limitations, gaining valuable insights to their individual stories while quietly crafting a trajectory of self-realisation. “I am not one to easily cry. But there was a moment in counselling that is unforgettable till this day. The boy I was speaking to had lost both his arms. When he shared his story with me, I was overcome with heightened emotions. It was a rare, intense feeling that left me deeply affected,” she recalls. “It is easy to empathise but it tests your mental strength once you internalise the emotions your client is feeling.” Aizan is now occupied with research studies, in hopes that she can improve on current policies for the disabled. “When my professor told me that I can make significant changes through research studies, I was sold,” she enthuses. “I feel empowered to help the disabled people in the country and encourage society to create equal opportunities for them.” Her sociable manner and self-assured values had eased her into a compelling life, complete with a righteous agenda, despite a difficult past. But she also had to study twice as hard to ready herself for employment. “I completed my credit hours in a year and a half, compared to the usual two, and graduated with my Master’s Degree this year. At 26 years old, I was desperate to start working and earn an income to support my family,” she explains.

Taking it to the sky Aizan’s personal perseverance sounds very similar to Ahmad Azuan’s, although they live miles away with vastly different dreams. Ahmad Azuan Ton Mohamed comes from a rural area in Besut, Terengganu and is the fourth child in a family of 10 children. When we were introduced to him at the Asia Pacific Flight Training (APFT) Academy in Kota Bahru, Kelantan, the Principal of APFT, Maj. (Rtd) Dato’ Mohd Khalid Ali had expressed that Ahmad Azuan will be awarded the Top Gun trophy for being the overall best student in his batch. His reaction was one that was humbly shocked. “I did not expect this and I was not even aware, to be honest! But I guess if he says so, then I’m happy that my determination has paid off.” Ahmad Azuan is currently completing his Instructor Course at the academy after having just graduated with a Commercial Pilot License this year. It was his stepping stone to achieve his dream of becoming a professional pilot. “After graduating, I was unemployed for more than a month. I could not afford it because my family is poor and I was eager to start working to ease my family off their financial burden. The academy had offered me to be an instructor here, with fees fully sponsored to pursue the course. I took it up

although I am duty-bound to work at the academy for at least four years.” The composed 21-year-old’s flying ambition was fuelled when he was in high school. “My school was located near an airport. I used to be intrigued by the planes landing and taking off, wondering what it was like to fly a plane,” he beams. Operating the cockpit of a plane is no easy feat, he later discovers. During the initial months, he faced difficulties in using the instruments. “I was tough on myself for not getting it right. I remember being scolded by the instructor once and I completely phased out. Since that mistake, I was determined to study harder.” Not that he needed anymore slaps on the wrist to goad him further. His uncompromising attitude is demonstrated by his self discipline, unlike many peers his age. “When I decide to pursue something, I will be wholeheartedly dedicated and focused. I cannot be distracted,” he admits. The journey here was not easy due to his family’s financial limitation. But he was an early self-starter, persuading his parents to allow him to enter a boarding school just so he could get quality education. “I was impressed with how they produced straight A’s students. The school fees were no doubt more costly but fortunately, my grades were good enough to apply for government subsidies. My family had to pay the cost difference, which amounted to almost the same as what I’d pay at a public school in the end,” he explains.

DREAMS KNOWS No LIMITS Ahmad Azuan Ton Mohamed may have a down-to-earth personality but when he dreams the skies are the limit. Having graduated top of his class from the Asia Pacific Flight Training (APFT) Academy, Ahmad Azuan is currently an instructor at the academy and dreams of becoming a professional pilot one day.

The studious Ahmad Azuan was 13 when he moved to a boarding school. The experience, he says, was invaluable. At first he was upset and often homesick because he did not have enough money to travel home during his studies. But the most difficult and challenging times proved to be his biggest motivator to help his family break free of their limitations. His eyes glaze with reverence every time he mentions his family. “They’re my priority. I’m now able to support my younger siblings by helping them with their school fees. My family is very supportive and education is highly valued. That’s the way I was brought up, in addition to having religion as my guidance.”

The success stories that Aizan and Ahmad Azuan has achieved thus far shows that everything has worked out for the best. But it is not without going through a fair share of rejections. Aizan had difficulties seeking study loans to pursue her Master’s degree despite obtaining a first-class bachelor’s degree. “It was a tedious process. I was also disheartened because there were not many scholarships offered for Human Sciences,” she explains. Ahmad Azuan faced a similar dilemma. There were virtually no scholarships to become a pilot. “I submitted my application to a flight training academy but there was no reply. At the same time, I was offered a scholarship to pursue an engineering course in Germany.” His dreams of becoming a pilot, he admits, may not have been realised had he not received the Honda Dreams Fund. The handwritten essay he submitted was heart-rending, but more importantly, his drive to change his family’s hardship was palpable. “My family and I are extremely thankful for this opportunity. I’d probably be attempting an academic course I have no interest in, if not for this. Being where I am today has encouraged my siblings to dare to dream, to aspire to be more. It has enriched our lives in many ways,” he says appreciatively. Aizan echoes his sentiments. “Without the Honda Dreams Fund, I wouldn’t have been able to pursue my Master’s because my family simply could not afford it. I can’t imagine where I’d be now because my job as a lecturer has inspired me to widen my ambition. I believe everything happens for a reason. I may have faced different obstacles from other recipients but I believe God had chosen me to help the disabled. That’s why I am here.” Aizan and Ahmad Azuan are among the first recipients and graduates of The Honda Dreams Fund when it was introduced in 2007. It has launched their journeys in unpredictable ways. Aizan is currently looking for ways to fund her PhD in Disability Studies. Ahmad Azuan will lend his knowledge as an instructor to young achievers in aviation while keeping a resolute goal to be a professional pilot. As she pushes herself up with her crutches and sends us to the door, Aizan let us in on a secret. “Never give up. Never, ever give up.”

About Honda Dreams Fund In 2010, the Honda Dreams Fund will enter its fourth year of providing scholarships to deserving underprivileged youth in Malaysia. Initiated by Honda Malaysia Sdn Bhd in partnership with the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), the programme provides full and non-binding scholarships to 20 Malaysian students every year.

The Honda represents many different things to many different people, especially for those from the various facets of life. Wan Indra Putra Ahmad and his wife, Hawa Omar, believe the Accord’s traits are unique, especially with such a strong brand presence.

It was a typically busy morning at Tenaga Setia Resources, the Honda showroom in Jalan 222, Petaling Jaya. Located strategically in the heart of the town’s shopping and commercial area, the showroom has excellent visibility and has good exposure for Honda owners living in and around the PJ area. Judging by the number of cars closely parked outside, business was looking good. Inside, the atmosphere was not unlike one you’d find on a typical day at the bank or clinic, with people either standing or seated, all eager to hand over their cars for service or get their freshly serviced cars returned. While most customers are waiting anxiously to be called up by the electronic queuing machine, some are settling comfortably into the lounge area sipping coffee or flipping through magazines. And then there are also customers who prefer to put their minds elsewhere by surfing the web with their laptops, courtesy of the showroom’s free WiFi service. However, unlike the others, we weren’t there for the typical morning business; but instead, we were there to meet Wan Indra Putra Ahmad and his wife, Hawa Omar. The couple has four children and one grandchild and owns a current generation Honda Accord, which had just been delivered to the workshop for a regular service. As it happens, they live in section 8, a neighbourhood not far from the Honda showroom, which made it natural for the couple to visit the showroom.

The close vicinity of Tenaga Setia Resources to his home isn’t the only reason why Mr. Wan Indra Putra likes to send his car to this dealership for servicing, it is also the close relationship he shares with both Sales Manager Mr. Richard Ng and Service Manager Mr. Lim See Ben.

Wan doesn’t appear as a typical person who you’d imagine running a ‘Bumiputera Class A’ construction company. Sporting a well-tailored double- breasted suit and a buttoned-down pinstriped shirt, Wan looks handsomely dressed for a contractor. And it seems that his sense of style extends to his car as well. He owns a bold beige metallic Accord complete with the sporty and elegant ‘Modulo’ bodykit. Wan is the executive chairman of Aliran Musim Sdn Bhd, a company that specialises in projects that involve flood mitigation – a subject that he knows very well and is also very passionate about. “I have been a contractor since 1996. My contract work specialises in flood mitigation. We build walls to contain water surges and river overflow.

Mr. & Mrs. Wan couldn’t resist a chance to test-drive the CR-V. With its roomy interior and distinctive styling, the couple displayed their interest to Sales Advisor Fauziah in considering the CR-V for their next purchase.

“I love doing my work because, unlike other contract work – such as erecting buildings, homes etc – flood mitigation is a living and breathing business. A project to deepen a riverbed doesn’t just end when it is completed – there will be a need to return to the project if there is a sudden rapid flow of heavy sand. So it is a living and breathing business as far as I’m concerned,” he said. And before we can get to our next question, he continues, “Like most successful businesses, I started at the bottom and worked my way up. But I’ve always been interested in this line of work only because it is a job that concerns the natural environment. “And taking care of the environment involves discipline. I despise people who lack discipline that they care little for the environment and throw rubbish in drains and rivers. Likewise, making cars also requires a lot of care and discipline and I can see that in a Honda. Everything about a Honda, from its design, engineering or marketing, displays a high level of discipline and care. “Mind you - and I have to insist - I never got involved in the stealing of sand – this is because my job is unfortunately almost always linked to the stealing of sand!” Wan said with an earnest laugh. It was clear then that this was a man with strong convictions and possessed a strong personal philosophy in life, with a good if, slightly dark sense of humor.

09

“Personally, I also own two other cars, both nonHonda makes. And so, I decided to add a Honda to the collection, simply because of Honda’s long-standing history and established reputation in Malaysia. I also feel that the brand image of Honda is at best average and isn’t too ostentatious – a trait that I look for in a car.” But did he always want an Accord? What about other Honda models? How about a CR-V? “Honestly, I would have gone for the CR-V but decided against it after hearing about a model replacement. I consulted my wife and we decided that the CR-V would be our next sport utility vehicle. His wife, Hawa works for Assistive Technology, a company that produces special software for the disabled. As finance director of the company, she tells us of the unfortunately high costs for software for the disabled. “I do a lot of charity work for the disabled, particularly those within the Felda community. There are a number of disabled children who don’t speak English and so, my company manufactures Malay text-to-speech software.” She said she The Accord’s unique ability to appear conservative on one hand, while sporting luxurious and stylish looks attracted Mr. Wan Indra Putra to choose it as his personal car.

What is it that attracts you most to the Honda brand? Besides being a uniquely conservative car brand, it portrays a unique impression. I believe the highly motivated and disciplined work culture within the company is reflected on its cars. And the progressive model development on its cars is testament to its dedication and seriousness in providing the best technology has to offer. Furthermore, the development has always been measured and incremental, which is something I particularly like. What do you like about the Honda Accord? Despite the car maintaining its conservative image, the Accord is luxurious and prestigious when it wants to be. This, I find extremely unique. Is the Accord your first Honda? Actually, my first Honda was an Accord, the previous generation model. I liked the car very much as it was a worthy car. However, it was purchased as a company car for one of our projects and it was sold shortly after. And so, when I was considering a new car, the Accord was the first I considered. Why do you frequent Tenaga Setia Resources? It is more a friendship, than a professional relationship. The people here are friendly and warm each time we come here. Sometimes, they try their best to accommodate us, even if we hadn’t made a prior appointment. This makes us feel very welcome, which is why we would still come here despite moving to Shah Alam in a few weeks. Having already owned a Honda, with the Accord, what are you, or have been considering to purchase next? We were considering the CR-V initially but after I learnt that a facelift is due soon, we decided to wait it out. After consulting each other, we decided that the CR-V was going to be our next Honda model. My wife can’t wait for it to be introduced soon, so that she can sell her current one. 10

With Dreams Mr. Wan Indra Putra Ahmad

With DREAMS magazine would like to thank Mr. & Mrs. Wan Indra Putra Ahmad for agreeing to appear in this issue. It was indeed a pleasure to chat with them about the joy they get from driving their Honda cars and visiting their favourite dealership, Tenaga Setia Resources Sdn. Bhd.

Mr. & Mrs. Wan, firm believers in the regular maintenance and upkeep of their Honda Accord, discusses with service personnel, Mr. Tam, on the service to be performed as they register the car for its scheduled service at the dealership’s service centre.

prefers to drive an SUV and can’t wait for the next generation CR-V to come out so that she can sell her current one. Through the course of the interview, Richard Ng, the showroom’s sales manager, occasionally walks into the meeting room to see how the interview is going. The banter between Ng and the couple appear to be close, somewhat like friends more than a professional relationship. “Richard and the Tenaga staff have always been friendly and warm to us when we come here, even when we forget to make a prior appointment. They always make us feel very welcome. That’s why we have decided that even when we move to Shah Alam in a few weeks, we will still visit this showroom for our car’s regular service,” said Hawa with a smile.

DEALER’S INFORMATION Tenaga Setia Resources Sdn. Bhd., located along Jalan 222 in Petaling Jaya, has been in operation for the past six years. Being located in a strategic location in PJ, Tenaga Setia Resources has a wide customer base. However, the dealership has an experienced and professional sales force, who understands the importance of customer satisfaction. According to its Sales Manager, the outlet is constantly working towards providing the best services to its customers. Tenaga Setia Resources Sdn. Bhd. aims to support Honda Malaysia in achieving the No. 1 spot in the JD Power SSI Sales Satisfaction survey. In order to cater for the growing demand of Honda vehicles and service requirements in the PJ area, the company plans to shift its operations to a bigger facility along Jalan Templer. One of the interesting traits that Tenaga Setia Resources Sdn. Bhd. has embarked on is building a life long relationship with its customers, converting them into being friends and ultimately, Honda family members. Besides selling new cars, Tenaga Setia Resources Sdn. Bhd. also has after sales services such as repair and maintenance of vehicles, and providing renewals of vehicle insurance and road tax. In complementing Honda Malaysia, the facility also has set its sights on becoming the best Honda dealer in the country.

HONDA’S GREEN FACTORY, AN ECO REVOLUTION

Honda Malaysia fulfils a social responsibility to build a company that society wants to exist

When Honda’s Suzuka Factory was built in 1960 in Japan, Soichiro Honda had been resolute about building a plant that is harmoniously integrated into the local community. Despite changing times, his vision continues to be brought to fruition by Honda associates around the world, particularly more so in an age of climate change. Since the introduction of Honda’s Environmental Management Program (EMP) in 2006, Honda Malaysia has taken significant steps to improve their environmental performance in production operations by reducing carbon footprints and producing cleaner air in the community that they live and work in. At Honda Malaysia’s 80-acre manufacturing plant in HICOM Pegoh Industrial Park of Alor Gajah, Malacca, innovative ideas have been implemented to address pressing environmental issues facing society today. The state-of-the-art plant may house automobile assembly activities, but upon entering its compound, you are greeted by workers in spotless white uniforms, which is the first trace of the plant’s indisputable cleanliness. Beneath the plant’s ordinary steely exterior, the green effects are subliminal. An intricate ventilation system is fitted to ensure a constant flow of fresh air to displace body heat and natural sunlight leaks into the factory from a solar-smart roof. The glow is undoubtedly cosy during non-production hours when an automatic timer turns off the high bay lights to conserve energy. The EMS committee explains that much of the environmental-friendly systems in place now are voluntary initiatives by local associates to strive towards a greener plant. Syahril M. Azmi, the appointed Environmental Management Representative, says, “The EMP goal is to reduce CO2 emissions by 10 per cent from the previous year. Given the increasing scale of our production, minimising the greenhouse effects becomes an uphill challenge, although it presents us with an opportunity to lead a lot of breakthroughs on energy and waste management.”

Laying the green foundation “Honda associates are given the freedom to find ways to achieve the goal while maintaining Honda’s philosophy of respecting an individual through initiatives, equality and trust. A true testament to the capabilities of our people is when we obtained the ISO 14001 certification of our Environmental Management System (EMS) in May 2007 without employing a third party consultant,” says Syahril. When the ISO 14001 requirements were fulfilled in 2007, the environmental program concentrated on smaller projects to improve on energy consumption and minimise wastage. “The ISO 14001 has its own standard which we had to comply. Our aspect-impact study helped us to establish our own index and action plan. The Constant Velocity Joint (CVJ) and Paint departments had the highest carbon emissions and wastage. Hence, our objective was to regulate those areas first” he adds. An Inverter System was introduced in the Paint Department to restrict the amount of electricity used by machines during start-up and at the same time, a precision-engineered bell spray gun helped to improve overall paint efficiency and reduce wastage. The new spray gun also successfully lowered damaging Volatile Organic Compound (VOC) emissions by 46 per cent. 14

Carbon emissions and metal chips wastage are regulated at the Constant Velocity Joint department.

DISTILLATION TANK VAPORISES DIRTY SOLVENT IN SOLVENT VAPOUR

Thinner Recycling Process Used thinner is first amassed in a distillation tank where a heating element gradually heats up the liquid to boiling point. Upon reaching boiling point, the thinner transforms from liquid to vapour (gas) with all impurities left behind as residue, while only the purified thinner travels as a va p o ur t h ro ug h a se ri e s o f condensation pipes. The cooler temperatures in these pipes then help turn the thinner back into a solvent (liquid), which is t h e n c o l l e c t e d a n d reused.

The paint that goes to waste automatically flows into the Waste Water Treatment Centre located within the plant and is transformed into harmless dry sludge before it is sent to the landfill. The extracted water is then distilled and re-used within the plant. By 2008, the Inverter System had reduced CO2 by 35 per cent and its energy saving achievements was a key motivator to expand the use of the Inverter System in 60 per cent of the plant in 2009. A coordinating EMP committee member, Mohd Firdauzaman, explains that the effective results from the initial groundwork spurred the rapid transition towards a plant that produces at a more sustainable capacity. “In March 2009, we decided to replace all 400w Mercury Vapor high bay bulbs with Metal Halide ones which consumes power at a lower 250w capacity. These lights will go off during non production hours, and solar light from the roof aided by newly installed energy saving corridor light is used on the walkway. Energy is further conserved by replacing all petrol-fuelled forklifts to battery-operated ones. The combination of all these implementation effectively reduces more than 50,000kg CO2 in a year,” says Mohd Firdauzaman.

Reducing and recycling waste The incremental steps in balancing energy needs also motivated the committee to build fully functional and sustainable recycling centres to reduce waste to the environment, particularly hazardous ones. “Many people will think of it as bad smelling garbage and send it to the landfill,” says Mohd Firdauzaman referring to the food waste collected at the canteen. “We have more than 1,500 associates and contractors dining in this factory, which means there is a huge volume of food scrap collected daily. Since our food waste recycling program was set up in March this year, we are able to compost up to 200kg of food waste per day.” “The bacteria that speeds up the decomposition also removes bad odour in the process. This results in a clean, high quality alternative fertilizer that is used for gardening around the factory. We see this as an effective cure to the excess odour and waste, and phases out using chemical fertilizers,” he adds.

The Waste Water Treatment Centre is integrated with irrigation built around the plant to divert waste water for recycling.

Waste Water Treatment Process At Honda Malaysia, harmful wastewater from its plant is not simply released back into the environment. Rather, advanced waste water treatment technology is used to process it into safe, drinkable water for gardening and flushing purposes.

Ensures a constant flow rate into all parts of the treatment system. To recycle sludge from waste water, chemical coagulation is used to produce sludge rich in copper ions. Two layers of sand filters: anthracite coal and fine sand doubles the effectiveness of the filtration process. Methanol is added to provide carbon for good bacteria to remove harmful nitrates from the filtered water.

the air. Emissions from the CVJ department will also contribute to greenhouse effects if not responsibly managed. “Just a year ago, the indoor air in the department is congested

Up to 200kg of food waste is collected daily at the Food Waste Compost machine.

Excess waste is turned into high quality fertilizers in under 12 hours.

After many years of segregating recyclable by-products in an open space within the plant, a recycling centre complete with a rain harvesting system was also set up in 2009 to properly manage the huge load of manufacturing by-products like metal cases, metal chips, paper, plastic, polyfoam and wooden pellets discarded daily. Firdauzaman says, “It is really a great opportunity for us to strive towards a zero-waste-to-landfill target. Up to 10 tonnes of this waste is collected per day in our Recycle Centre. This includes metal chips laced with oil discarded from the CVJ department. We try to release nothing harmful to the environment so we have created oil trenches around the recycling centre that will filter and prevent the toxic grease from leaking to the drain.” “The recycling centre’s roof also captures rainwater which is then used to clean the building daily. This is an expansion of the same philosophy that guides the newly established Waste Water Treatment Centre,” he continues. To optimise domestic water usage, an irrigation system is built around the plant to divert all water wastage to be distilled at the water treatment centre. The treated water is sampled and approved by the DOE, and its quality is reflected by the health of Koi fishes breeding in the holding tank. The treated water is then rerouted to various areas in the plant to be used for flushing toilets and watering the green landscape in more than half the plant. Right beside it is the Thinner Recycling Centre, set up to minimise wastage from the Paint Department and optimise manufacturing efficiency. Unused thinner is filtered and distilled, making it good to be re-used again for cleaning the equipments within the department.

and the filthy mist blurs our vision. Installing an Oil and Mist Collector became a crucial step as we not only want a clean factory but we need cleaner air. We are glad that our associates are now breathing in cleaner air,” Syahril explains. “To comply with the standards of Malaysia’s Department of Environment (DOE), all the unfriendly toxic is collected from the CVJ department into the new machine, which will filter and expel the processed oil and mist as clean air. Air sampling data is monitored and this is reported back to the DOE every six months. At Honda, we value living in harmony with our surroundings and we hope to fully realise our dream of being a company that society wants to exist by 2010,” he adds. There is no question that the energy conserving activities, waste management and carbon reduction plans would have been further expanded when we meet with him again by then. With a common mission embraced by Honda associates around the world, Honda Malaysia is guided by the environmental compass in the right direction.

A centralised duct system collects oil and mist pollutant at the CVJ department and keeps the indoor air clean.

Seeking a cleaner air Underlining the waste and carbon reduction is a permanent mission to clean up the air by monitoring all harmful gases that could be released from the assembly line. No longer will the stereotypical image of industrial pollution be conjured up when you think of car manufacturing. From the Assembly Frame department, carbon monoxide from testing engine exhausts is filtered during the exhaust ducting and firing exhaust process before it is expelled as harmless gas into

The Oil & Mist Collector filters pollutants before clean air is released according to Department of Environment (DOE) standards.

POWERING MOBILITY You may know Honda as a world-renowned manufacturer of automobiles and motorcycles, but it aspires to be more than that. Honda’s dream is to provide the power of mobility to all – even to the elderly and disabled. This passion is reflected in the development of the Honda walking assist devices and the personal mobility device. Join us as we take you on a whole new kind of “off-road” experience that is uniquely Honda.

SINCE ITS INCEPTION, Honda has always viewed itself as more than just a provider of high-quality vehicles, but rather, as a leading company that strives to define the future of mobility through cuttingedge technologies. It comes as no surprise then that Honda is a firm believer in research and development (R&D). “R&D is Honda’s driving force, and groundbreaking innovation is our watchword. In the spirit of founder Soichiro Honda, we seek to continually earn the enthusiasm and trust of our customers as a leader in groundbreaking innovation. Realising the power of dreams through our individuality, expertise and intensity,” said Honda Motor Co. President and Chief Executive Officer Takanobu Ito, who is also President and Director of Honda R&D Co., Ltd.

Introducing Honda R&D The story of Honda R&D in Japan goes back almost 50 years, when it was set up as an independent entity from Honda Motor Co. Serving as the company’s primary research and development facility, the department is responsible for transforming an idea into an actual product. Today, there are a total of 28 Honda R&D facilities located worldwide in North America, South America, Europe, China and Asia, with the most prominent being the Fundamental Technology Research Centre in Wako, Saitama, Japan. Responsible for innovations such as the ASIMO (Advanced Step in Innovative Mobility) humanoid robot, walking assist devices and personal mobility device, these centres are a prime example of anything is possible with the power of dreams.

Walking Assist Device with Stride Management System The experimental model of the Honda walking assist device made its inaugural appearance on 25 April 2008 in Osaka, Japan. The venue was the International Trade Fair on Barrier Free Equipments & Rehabilitation for the Elderly & Disabled (BARRIER FREE 2008). Worn with a belt around the user’s hip and thigh, the device offers walking support for the elderly, as well as people with weakened leg muscles who are still capable of walking on their own. Using information obtained from hip angle sensors incorporated within the device, a control Central Processing Unit (CPU) instructs builtin motors to provide optimal walking assistance, enabling the user to lengthen his or her stride effortlessly. 18

Honda’s success in designing its first walking assist device was the result of extensive studies conducted on the way humans walk, during its development of the ASIMO humanoid robot. The compact size of the device was also made possible using flat, brushless motors and a Honda proprietary control system, while the simple-to-wear design helped ensure a light overall weight. The Walking Assist Device with Stride Management System was tested at To measure the effectiveness of the Kasumigaseki-Minami Hospital the device in real life, tests were in Saitama, Japan, to measure the in collaboration with effectiveness of the device in real world conducted situations. Walking Assist Device with Bodyweight Support System Unlike its predecessor that helps increase the user’s walking strides, Honda’s second-generation walking assist device supports one’s bodyweight and minimises the load on his or her legs. Thanks to an integrated mechanism that channels assisting force from the device towards the user’s centre of gravity, the device provides assistance in a wide variety of postures and motions – ranging from walking to travelling up and down a flight of stairs, to crouching. Unveiled in Japan in November 2008, the device consists of a seat, frame and a pair of shoes. To use, the user simply puts on the pair of shoes and lifts the seat into position. Within the same month of its launch, Honda associates had the opportunity to try the device where it was experimented at the Honda Motor Co. Saitama Factory in Sayama, Saitama.

Essentially it functions just like the way people walk. The ability of the U3-X to mimic human movement was made possible with the world’s first* omni-directional driving wheel system – the Honda Omni Traction Drive System or HOT Drive System, for short. A rider simply has to lean his or her upper body forward or backward to move the U3-X front and back, while leaning on one’s side instructs the device to turn.

Civic Type R Owners & Contest Winners Get To Be Race Drivers For A Day

On 14 November 2009, Civic Type R owners and online winners of the Type R Challenge had a rare opportunity to push the new Civic Type R – voted Malaysia’s Car of the Year by the Autocar Asean Awards 2008 and New Straits Times/Maybank Car of the Year 2008 – to the max at Sepang International Circuit. The Civic Type R Owners’ Track Day was divided into two parts: track session and slalom challenge. For the track session, drivers began by following a marshal for 40mins to learn about racing lines and safety measures before learning how to overtake. In the slalom challenge, drivers first accompanied instructors for one lap of zigzag manoeuvres around the track, followed by a solo, timed run. This led to a third run with instructors educating the drivers on how to improve their performance and lastly, a final timed run where the drivers competed on their own. “The Honda Civic Type R was my first choice of vehicle due to its performance, fun to drive element and its ideal space size but what closed the deal was the after sales service which truly impressed me. The “Track Day” was very well organized and I truly enjoyed myself especially at the ‘slalom’ challenge where we had to zigzag between cones at a fast speed. I was able to test my handling and driving skills on the vehicle. It was also then that I discovered the handling of the Type R which was to my amazement, really good!”, said Amirul Imran bin Amirin, a 30 years old Engineer. There was also a slalom time trial challenge for Civic Type R owners with plaques awarded for the fastest times. Besides Civic Type R owners, eight winners of the online Type R Challenge contest – selected for creating the best slogans – were also invited to participate in Track Day. Coming from as far as Penang, winners were given the chance to test drive the Civic Type R and Civic 2.0 during the track session and slalom challenge, both under the guidance of instructors. “Our customers are our priority. In showing our appreciation for their support and loyalty, the track day event provided them with an optimal, yet safe environment to test the Type R, pushing the limits of the vehicle while discovering its performance. We were also able to obtain direct feedback and ways to improve our products and services,” said Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of Honda Malaysia Mr. Toru Takahashi. Track Day was truly memorable for all, and at the end no one left empty handed, with everyone being presented a certificate of participation as a memento.
