DPI images for publication using ImageJ: DPI stands for Dots per inch. The DPI of a digital image is calculated by dividing the total no. of dots wide by the total no. of inches wide OR Calculating the total no. of dots high by the total no. of inches high. 1. Open a TIFF image

2. Go to Image – adjust – Scale to DPI

3. Select scale to DPI – the default value is 600 enter 1200 or your desired DPI value Do not change anything else Click on OK. You will see a new window with a much larger image.

4. If you are not sure you can check your DPI by checking the show info menu

5. Divide the width in pixel by width in inches or height in pixels by height in inches

So you get 5168/4.3067 = 1199.99 (approx. 1200) OR 3872/3.2267 = 1199.98 (approx. 1200) You initially set the DPI to 1200 and here you are now you have 1200 Dots Per Inch in your image or your image is 1200 DPI.

If you want a 12x18 Photographic Print with a DPI of 300, you would want to use a file with 3600x5400 pixels. You can calculate by: (12x18) x 300 = (12x300) x (18x300) = 3600x5400
