Eight Short Preludes and Fugues Formerly Ascribed to J.S. Bach July 22, 2008 This edition is based primarily upon volume 38 of the the Bach-Gesellschaft edition of J.S. Bach’s complete works, published in 1891 by Breitkopf and Hartel. Volume 38 was edited by Ernst Nauman (1832-1910). New material (if any) is copyright 2008 by Steven Dunlop, and is available pursuant to the CC-BY-SA 3.0 license. Lilypond source code and other editions, including an alto clef edition, an edition with pedal notes appearing in red, and a 10x14 landscape edition, are available on my web site: http://www.nerstrand.net. In compiling this edition, I have modernized the use of accidentals. Since the assignment of voices to staves was generally editorial in the Bach-Gesellschaft edition, and since most scholars agree that the assignment of voices to staves in the manuscripts had no musical significance, I have in some cases moved voices between staves for ease of reading and performance. In some cases, I have recast polyphonic voices as chords. The use of clef changes is editorial. In addition, I have made these changes so that the score reflects modern scholarship: No. 1 in C major - BWV 553: I omit an f sharp in the left hand in measure 3. I omit the editorial pedal notes in measures 14, 16, and 17, which are not in the surviving manuscript Performers may note that some modern editions add a cadential trill in measure 19. No. 2 in d minor - BWV 554: B-G has one flat in the key signature. I follow the manuscript, which does not. Accidentals are updated accordingly. I omit the e in the l.h. at the beginning of measure two. Also in measure two, I lengthen the d and tie it to the next measure. No. 3 in e minor - BWV 555: The editorial chord in measure two of the prelude in B-G is not included here. I omit the f sharp in the right hand 3rd beat of measure one. B-G has an error in measures 20 and 21 which I correct – I change the last note in measure 20 from d to f sharp and add a g to measure 21. In measure 24, 47, 48, I have added editorial ties. In Measure 64, the sharp on the g, marked editorial in B-G, is not marked editorial here. Measure 90, in the alto voice, the g4. is a g2. in b-g with the following eigths in a separate voice. In the final chord I change breves to whole notes so they fit in the meter. Performers may note that other modern editions differ regarding ties, and that in measure 73, in the tenor voice, some editions have shorten the b from a quarter note to an eighth note. No. 4 in F major - BWV 556: Measure 70, the second note in the alto voice is corrected from e to f. Articulation slurs have been added to those triplets that lacked them to show the obvious intent of the manuscript. Most other modern editions omit the double bar lines, and some use a D.C. to shorten the printed score. No. 5 in g major - BWV 557: Measure 57, the a in the tenor voice is corrected to a half note from two quarter notes. Measure 47, I changed the stemming to clarify the separation of voices. i
ii Unlike some many other modern editions, I do not change the d in the alto line of measure 44 to a d sharp. No. 6 in g minor - BWV 558: Measure 63, corrected an engraving error which resulted in the first note of the alto and soprano voices to be reversed, and changed the soprano note from a quarter note to a dotted quarter note. Measure 13, removed a tie in the pedal line. Measure 81, corrected the first b natural in the alto line to a b flat. No. 7 in A major - BWV 559: No changes from B-G. Some other moder editions add a tie between the b flats in the tenor line of measures 58 and 59. No. 8 in Bb major - BWV 560: Measure 12, last note changed from an f to a c to match obvious intent from parallel passages.
