Ellen Hopkins is a young adult fiction writer. Her first young adult book was Crank in 2004. Crank is based on her own struggles with her daughter’s drug addiction. All of her novels are based on either her life or the lives of her friends and loved ones. Ellen tackles tough teen issues such as drug addiction, suicide, choices, and consequences. An attempt to ban her books has happened, most recently, in Oklahoma. Parents questioned the appropriateness of her titles for middle school students. An author’s visit was cancelled at the last minute due to these concerns. The frankness in her writing and unique writing style has led to quite a following. She is set to release her first adult novel, Triangles, in the fall of 2011. In addition, Tilt, will be the young adult companion to her first adult novel.
