HUNGER IN CANADA • Over 3 million people use food banks every month. • 41% of the people using food banks are children.

What is the main cause of hunger in Canada? POVERTY: When a family’s income is too low to be able to buy the quantities of food, shelter and clothing that are necessary. Canada produces enough food for everyone to maintain a healthy, balanced diet. It’s not the availability of food, but the availability of income to buy the food that leads many people to use a food bank.

HUNGER IN MANITOBA • There are 48 food banks in Manitoba. • In 2006, over 44,000 people in Manitoba used food banks. • 47% of Manitobans using food banks are children. That’s the highest in Canada. • In 2005, Winnipeg Harvest distributed food each month to 39,265 people. That is almost the entire population of Brandon.

WHAT ARE

YOU GOING TO DO ABOUT IT?

Art vs. Hunger

Here’s the Basic Idea: • Students create and design ceramic bowls. • They will then serve a simple meal of bread and soup to the community. • Parents and community members buy one bowl of soup for $10.00 and take the bowl home. • The bowl is left empty in the home as a reminder that there are many Empty Bowls in the world. • All money raised is given to Winnipeg Harvest to help fight hunger in Manitoba.

• Winnipeg Harvest books about 500 appointments a day. • Harvest operates only by donations of money and food. • Users of Harvest can only access the food bank once every two weeks. Access is limited due to insufficient donations. • One individual food kit will last 2-3 days.

Let’s do the math: • For every $1 donated, Harvest can get $20 worth of food. • So, selling a bowl for $10 will actually give Harvest: $200 for each bowl sold! • Between the grade 7 and 8 students making bowls, we should be able to make: 320 Bowls • If we sell 320 bowls, worth $200 each, we can donate:

$64,000 to help fight hunger in Manitoba!
