English as a Foreign Language

Learn to speak English in South Africa

Description of the Course Your success in the academic and business worlds, both internationally and in South Africa, is largely dependent on your degree of proficiency in English. The Wits Language School (WLS) course in English as a Foreign Language (EFL) will develop your reading, writing, listening and speaking skills to the level of proficiency required for further academic studies, or entry into the business environment. Learn to speak English fluently and to interact with confidence in all social contexts. The course is divided into six levels of English proficiency, namely Beginner, Elementary, Pre-intermediate, Intermediate, Upperintermediate and Advanced. In addition, we offer a ‘Natural English’ course for students at pre-intermediate level or higher. This course focuses on fluency, communication skills in the workplace and in social contexts. Refer to the next page for more information on this course. It should be noted that this is not a literacy course, nor does it focus specifically on English for Business Purposes.

Admission Requirements There is no minimum admission requirement, other than literacy in your own language. Learners ranging in proficiency from absolute beginners to those who are fairly proficient will be admitted to the course. All applicants are required to write a placement test to assess their level of English proficiency before admission.

Who Should Attend? This course is aimed at foreign language users of English who want to improve their passive and active knowledge in all areas of English. The course helps learners to build the competence and confidence they need, to use English on a daily basis in all aspects of their lives. This is the ideal course for learners who believe that their

spoken and/or written English will not meet the requirements of tertiary study or the workplace, as well as for those who simply want to be able to socialise with confidence in English-speaking environments. The course aims at improving reading, writing, listening and speaking skills, in addition to providing a thorough grasp of English grammar, developing vocabulary and broadening your understanding of the language used in a range of formal and informal social contexts.

Certification Students who successfully complete the course, having attended a minimum of 90% of the classes, are awarded a WLS Certificate of Competence. Learners are not assessed solely on the basis of an end-of-course test. Instead, assessment of the learner’s progress in all skills is continuous and is based on written work, communicative ability and participation in class.

Course Outcomes • Improve the accuracy of your grammar and pronunciation, expand your vocabulary and develop your skills in speaking, listening, reading and writing, across a range of different contexts. • Improve aspects of English grammar, such as the correct use of tenses, pronouns and prepositions. • Improve reading skills - comprehension of written texts; reviews of books, newspaper and magazine articles. • Improve writing skills - emails, formal and informal letters, essays, etc. • Improve listening skills - comprehension exercises based on audio material from CDs and DVDs. • Improve speaking skills - pair and group interaction; presentations. • Improve the use of English across a range of different social contexts, such as a classroom, a hotel, a restaurant, a bank, an interview, a cocktail party and telephone calls.

Course Fee This course is another option for EFL students (see English as a Foreign Language courses). The cost of a 7-week course is R8,800. This includes: • assessment • tuition • afternoon activities • course material • certification At Wits Language School, we want our English students to get the best possible deal. We regularly compare costs of EFL courses around the world to make sure that we achieve this. You’ll find that the costs of EFL courses in the major cities of the UK, US, Canada, Australia, New Zealand and other countries are far more expensive than the English courses offered by Wits Language School. We even offer better value than the schools in Cape Town! Although we offer much more competitive prices, we work hard to ensure that we provide the best of everything – our teachers are all mother tongue speakers of English with formal teaching qualifications and several years of teaching experience behind them, and our course material is internationally recognised.

IELTS Preparation Course In order to be accepted into university, international students whose first language is not English are required to sit for an IELTS (International English Language Testing System) exam. This exam tests English proficiency in these language skills: Reading, writing, speaking and listening. Wits Language School also offers IELTS preparation courses.
