English Data Sheet Assignment – English III AP Sheet 1 Time Period/Author: Students will explain the time period in which the novel was written. Be sure to include how those events influenced the novel. Include any significant historical events, literary movements, or shifts in philosophy. Provide a brief biographical sketch of the author. Be sure to include any events that may have inspired the author to write this particular novel. Genre: You must identify and explain at least one genre into which the novel fits. To meet the “Exceeds Expectations” requirement of the rubric, at least one other genre must be included, as most novels fit into multiple genres. Your explanation should include a basic definition of that genre. For example, Historical Fiction would be a story set in a specific time period, like the middle ages. Setting: Make sure you explain both the location and the time period for the novel. Your explanation should include the significance of the setting to the work as a whole. Themes: to meet the “Exceeds Expectations” requirement, you must discuss more than one theme. For each theme, include an explanation of why it is important to the work. Your explanation should demonstrate a depth of understanding.

Sheet 2 Literary Techniques: to meet the “Exceeds Expectations” requirement, you must do more than three. From the list provided, identify at least three of the techniques. Be sure to provide a definition of the technique and explain what effect it has on the story. For the example, make sure you provide proper MLA documentation. For example: irony, jargon, hyperbole, paradox, metaphor, simile, etc. Characters: to meet the “Exceeds Expectations requirement, you must have at least two additional characters. Characters: Gene, Finny, Leper, Brinker Questions: to meet the “Exceeds Expectations” requirement, you must have more than two questions or discussion topics. Your questions or topics should require discussion and analytical thinking. For example, the question “Who seized control of the farm” is NOT an acceptable question. “Decide why Napoleon raised the puppies, and how did he employ them later?” is an acceptable question.
