Prerequisites: PLA.ESL-GR1 or successful completion of ESL-002 (Introduction to ESL Writing and Grammar) and ESL-003 (Introduction to ESL Reading and Oral Communication) Co-requisites: None Course Description: The course is an introduction to basic grammatical features of English that ESL students need to understand and produce in both written and oral text. Many of the same grammatical structures are targeted again in higher-level courses on a more in-depth level. Course Student Learning Outcomes: (Cognitive, Psychomotor, Affective Domains) Upon completion of this course, the student will be able to: 1. 2. 3. 4.

Identify “target grammatical structures” in various inputs Identify errors in “target grammatical structures” Correct written text for errors in “target grammatical structures” Demonstrate improvement in the usage of the “target grammatical structures” in various activities, including tasks that focus on writing grammatically accurate sentences

Prepositions of Time Course Activities: (A brief sentence or two about the format of the course, certain requirements, etc.) Students will carry out a series of activities on each grammar point, which may include but are not limited to the following: •

Listening to the target structure in use

Reading short texts that contain the target structure and discussing why and how it is used, Completing written and spoken exercises related to the target structure both in the class and in the computer lab when possible, Producing the target structure in an original piece of writing.

In addition, there may be a required computer component used in the classroom or for homework and practice. Assessment of Student Learning Outcomes: The student will be evaluated on the degree to which student learning outcomes are achieved. A variety of methods may be used such as tests, class participation, projects, homework assignments, etc. (There must be some evidence that the learning outcomes have been achieved.) 1. 2. 3. 4.

Tests/Quizzes that assess identification, correction and/or usage of grammatical structures. In-class and out of class writing assignments that use the target grammatical structures ESL Departmental Exam: 30% of the final grade There may be a required computer component used in the classroom or for homework and practice. 5.
