WHAT IS EVENSONG? Evensong in Grace Church is a very tiny fragment of something else: it is a fragment of the worship which is offered to God by Christian people, every hour of the twentyfour, in every part of the world. When you come to Evensong at Grace Church, it is as if you were dropping in on a conversation already in progress - a conversation between God and His people which began long before we were born, and will go on long after we are dead. Evensong is drawn almost entirely from the Bible. Its primary purpose is to proclaim the wonderful works of God in history and in the life, death and resurrection of Jesus Christ. Its secondary purpose is to evoke from the worshipper a response of praise, penitence, prayer and obedience. The service is in three parts. The first part (which is quite brief) prepares the worshipper for the story which is to follow. The second part is the narrative of God’s redeeming work, heard in the singing of psalms, canticles (and), and readings from Holy Scripture, which reaches its climax in the affirmation of faith (the Apostle’s Creed). The third part is our response to the God who has revealed Himself in history, in Jesus Christ, and in the Church.

The Office Hymn (Please be seated.)

Benedic, anima mea

Herbert Howells

Magnificat (choir) David Hogan (Luke 1:46-55) My soul doth magnify the Lord: and my spirit hath rejoiced in God my Saviour. For He hath regarded: the lowliness of His handmaiden. For behold, from henceforth: all generations shall call me blessed. For He that is mighty hath magnified me: and holy is His Name. And His mercy is on them that fear Him: throughout all generations. He hath shewed strength with His arm: He hath scattered the proud in the imagination of their hearts. He hath put down the mighty from their seat: and hath exalted the humble and meek. He hath filled the hungry with good things: and the rich He hath sent empty away. He rememb'ring His mercy hath holpen His servant Israel: as He promised to our forefathers, Abraham and his seed for ever. Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Ghost; as it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be: world without end. Amen. The Gospel Nunc dimittis (choir) (Luke 2:29-32)

David Hogan

Lord, now lettest thou thy servant depart in peace: according to thy word. For mine eyes have seen thy salvation, which thou hast prepared: before the face of all people; to be a light to lighten the Gentiles: and to be the glory of thy people Israel. Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Ghost; as it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be: world without end. Amen. (Please stand.)

The Apostles’ Creed (said)

I believe in God, the Father almighty, maker of heaven and earth; And in Jesus Christ his only Son our Lord; who was conceived by the Holy Ghost, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, dead, and buried. He descended into hell. The third day he rose again from the dead. He ascended into heaven, and sitteth on the right hand of God the Father almighty. From thence he shall come to judge the quick and the dead. I believe in the Holy Ghost, the holy catholic Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen.

(Please kneel.)

The Lord be with you. And with thy Spirit. Let us pray. Lord have mercy upon us. Christ have mercy upon us. Lord have mercy upon us.

Cantor:

Our Father,

Choir:

which art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come, thy will be done in earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread, and forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive them that trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. Amen.

The Suffrages (Choir) Cantor: Choir: Cantor: Choir: Cantor: Choir: Cantor: Choir: Cantor: Choir: Cantor: Choir:

O Lord, show thy mercy upon us. And grant us thy salvation. O Lord, save the State. And mercifully hear us when we call upon thee. Endue thy ministers with righteousness. And make thy chosen people joyful. O Lord, save thy people, And bless thine inheritance. Give peace in our time, O Lord, Because there is none other that fighteth for us, but only thou, O God. O God, make clean our hearts within us, And take not thy Holy Spirit from us.

A Collect for the First Sunday in Lent A Collect for Peace

O God, from whom all holy desires, all good counsels, and all just works do proceed: Give unto thy servants that peace which the world cannot give, that our hearts may be set to obey thy commandments, and also that by thee, we, being defended from the fear of all enemies, may pass our time in rest and quietness; through the merits of Jesus Christ our Savior. Amen.

A Collect for Mission

Keep watch, dear Lord, with those who work, or watch, or weep this night, and give thine angels charge over those who sleep. Tend the sick, Lord Christ; give rest to the weary, bless the dying, soothe the suffering, pity the afflicted, shield the joyous; and all for thy love’s sake. Amen.

(Please be seated.)

The Anthems Thy mercy, O Lord, reacheth unto the heavens (Adults)

Paul C. Edwards Thy mercy, O Lord, reacheth unto the heavens: and thy faithfulness unto the clouds. Thy righteousness standeth like the strong mountains: thy judgments are like the great deep. For with thee is the well of life, and in thy light shall we see light. O continue forth thy loving kindness unto them that know thee: and thy righteousness unto them that are true of heart. (Ps. 36: 5-6, 9-10)

Here I am, Lord (Choristers) I the Lord of sea and sky, I have heard my people cry. All who dwell in dark and sin my hand will save. I who made the stars of night, I will make their darkness bright, Who will bear my light to them? Whom shall I send? Here I am Lord. Is it I, Lord? I have heard you calling in the night. I will go, Lord. If you lead me I will hold your people in my heart.

Dan Schutte; arr. Andrew Parnell

I the Lord of wind and flame, I will tend the poor and lame. I will set a feast for them, my hand will save. Finest bread I will provide till their hearts be satisfied, I will give my life to them. Whom shall I send? Here I am Lord. Is it I, Lord? I have heard you calling in the night. I will go, Lord. If you lead me I will hold your people in my heart.

Here, O my Lord (Choristers) Here, O my Lord, I see thee face to face, Here faith would touch and handle things unseen; Here grasp with firmer hand the eternal grace, And all my weariness upon thee lean.

Barry Rose

Here would I feed upon the bread of God, Here drink with thee the royal wine of heav’n, Here would I lay aside each earthly load, Here taste afresh the calm of sin forgiv’n. I have no help but thine, nor do I need Another arm save thine to lean upon; It is enough, enough, my Lord indeed, My strength is in thy might, thy might alone. (Horatius Bonar (1808-89)

Jesu, the very thought of thee (Choristers & Adults) Jesu, the very thought of thee With sweetness fills the breast; But sweeter far thy face to see, And in thy presence rest.

No voice can sing, no heart can frame,

Paul Halley

Nor can the memory find A sweeter sound than Jesus’ name, The savior of mankind. O hope of every contrite heart, O joy of all the meek, To those who ask how kind thou art, How good to those who seek. But what to those who find? Ah! this Nor tongue nor pen can show; The love of Jesus, what it is None but his loved ones know. Jesu, our only joy be thou, As thou our prize wilt be; In thee be all our glory now, And through eternity. 12th century Latin; translation: Edward Caswall (Please kneel.)

The General Thanksgiving (said in unison)

Almighty God, Father of all mercies, we thine unworthy servants do give thee most humble and hearty thanks for all thy goodness and loving-kindness to us and to all whom you have made. We bless thee for our creation, preservation, and all the blessings of this life; but above all for thine inestimable love in the redemption of the world by our Lord Jesus Christ, for the means of grace, and for the hope of glory. And, we beseech thee, give us that due sense of all thy mercies, that our hearts may be unfeignedly thankful; and that we show forth thy praise, not only with our lips, but in our lives, by giving up our selves to thy service, and by walking before thee in holiness and righteousness all our days; through Jesus Christ our Lord, to whom, with thee and the Holy Ghost, be all honor and glory, world without end. Amen.

A Prayer of St. Chrysostom (Officiant)

Almighty God, who hast given us grace at this time with one accord to make our common supplication unto thee, and hast promised through thy well-beloved Son that when two or three are gathered together in his Name thou wilt be in the midst of them: Fulfill now, O Lord, the

desires and petitions of thy servants as may be best for us; granting us in this world knowledge of thy truth, and in the world to come life everlasting. Amen. Officiant: All:

Let us bless the Lord. Thanks be to God.

The Grace (Officiant)

May the God of hope fill us with all joy and peace in believing through the power of the Holy Spirit.

AMEN.

Orison God be with you till we meet again (Choristers)

Barry Rose God be with you till we meet again, by his counsels guide, uphold you, with his sheep securely fold you, God be with you, till we meet again. God be with you till we meet again, ‘neath his wings protecting hide you, daily manna still provide you: God be with you till we meet again. God be with you till we meet again: when life’s perils thick confound you, put his arm unfailing round you, God be with you till we meet again.
