Audi A6 With its light body, sporty chassis and a wide array of new assistance and multimedia systems, the new Audi A6 features a range of innovative solutions in every area of technology. The automaker has once again raised the bar with state-of-the-art technology for the business segment. Faurecia’s contribution reflects its reputation for technological prowess in comfort, interior trim, and perceived quality, cementing its position as Europe’s leading manufacturer of vehicle exteriors.

High-comfort seats The Audi A6 once again showcases Faurecia’s reputation as a world leader in automotive seating. The manufacturer’s comfort features have put the focus firmly on driving pleasure and passenger well-being. The A6 offers a wide array of upholstery options, with fabric as standard and leather as an optional extra. The front seats can be equipped with a luxury massage function that uses ten pneumatic units to knead the back, with a selection of five available programs. The innovation was developed by Hoerbiger, whose Seat Comfort Technology division was acquired by Faurecia in October 2010. The pneumatic system, which has already earned its spurs on the Audi A8, offers a wide array of comfort features in addition to massage, including shoulder, lumbar, lateral and thigh support. Faurecia front-end integration Faurecia supplies the rocker panels, front and rear bumpers and front-end module for the A6. The rocker panels and front/rear bumpers, which Faurecia has produced since buying Plastal Germany in April 2010, reflect the perceived quality expected of Germany’s leading automaker in the premium segment. Faurecia also poured its ample expertise in the field: a painting process ensuring a faultless paint levelling, a management of fit and finish in line with the premium requirements of Audi, as well as a perfect integration on the front with the large and low Singleframe grill, featuring beveled upper corners. Faurecia supplies a complete front-end to Audi plants. Developed and patented by Faurecia, “mEasy” is a mechanical system that eases the assembly of this front-end on the vehicle directly on the OEM’s assembly line. Perceived quality is ensured by the “mEasy” arm which allows perfect fitting with the car body. This arm is in itself unique. Indeed, a final Z-shaped setting can be made at the last moment on the assembly line to adjust the headlight with the bumper, once the hood is closed. The module incorporates an array of functions such as cooling, and shock absorbers. The result: reinforced perceived quality, management of diversity and vehicle weight reduction.

Fabricated manifold

Supporting the front-end, the carrier displays a major innovation. Indeed, it is made of hybrid aluminum and polyamide. The goal of this carrier is to meet torsion constraints of the vehicle, constraints with hood locks as well as heat resistance. For the Audi A6, reaching only 2.8 kg on a carrier has been a real challenge that Faurecia’s product and process engineering has been able to meet.

Reducing emissions A world leader in emissions control technologies, Faurecia supplies fabricated manifolds for the V6 3.0 TDI engines (available with an output of 204 hp and 245 hp). Lighter and better insulated, with less inertia than the cast alternative, the fabricated solution reduces pollution and improves the efficiency of emissions control systems. The 204 hp version manages an average fuel consumption of 5.2 liters per 100 km, for a CO2 output of 137 g/km: a 19 % improvement over the previous 190 hp model. The Group also delivers the complete rear exhaust sytems for all engine derivatives.

Aluminum interior trim The most salient feature of the cockpit is the ‘wraparound’, a decorative inlay that encircles the interior, running in one broad arc from the driver door to the passenger door, passing beneath the root of the windshield. The instrument panel1 with its high-precision strip rounds out the taut-line concept. Each and every feature of the interior is crafted with the greatest attention, resulting in flawless finishing. The aluminum-look control knobs are just one example, clicking and engaging perfectly. The car’s hi-tech feel is showcased by the care devoted to the quality of the trim, which comes in aluminum in addition to the standard trim in micrometallic platinum. Every aspect of the aluminum trim was exclusively designed by Angell-Demmel, the world’s leading manufacturer of real aluminum trim, acquired by Faurecia in January 2011. Audi RS3 Sportback Blazing performance, compact size. Audi has added a new model to its RS series: the RS3 Sportback. True to brand tradition, the engine boasts five cylinders and turbocharging technology. 19-inch wheels and fenders made of carbon fiber reinforced plastic (CFRP) underscore the Sportback’s distinctive pedigree. Faurecia provides the front-end module, aluminum for the interior and complete front and rear seat systems.

Sporty-feel, perceived quality and seat comfort Faurecia is the world’s third-largest automotive seating manufacturer and delivers complete front and rear seat systems for the new Audi RS3 Sportback. The RS3 comes with active driver and passenger head restraints in addition to integrated side airbags to further improve occupant safety. Built into the seat back, the restraint system deploys in the event of a rear-end collision. Movement of the occupant’s pelvis caused by the collision triggers the head restraint, which comes forward to prevent whiplash. For added thermal comfort, seats can also be heated and even ventilated in the cushion and lumbar areas. And to make it easier to carry bulkier items, Faurecia assembles a special two-thirds/one-third folding system and ski hatch for the rear seats. Faurecia offers a blend of safety and quality, with sports seats upholstered in fine Nappa leather oversewn with silver contrast stitching. Front-end in Audi sports style Building on its position as a European leader in vehicle exteriors, Faurecia has developed a front-end module packed with all the benefits of a modular approach: easier assembly process and simplified supply chain. The module incorporates an array of functions such as cooling, and shock absorbers. The result: reinforced perceived quality, management of diversity and vehicle weight reduction.

Audi A3 front-end

Developed and produced by Faurecia, the front-end carrier of the RS3 version has been totally redefined. Indeed, to meet the vehicle’s performance requirements and the engine compartment’s complexity, the hybrid thin steel / polyamide carrier has been modified and reinforced. It can now support both the new heat exchangers in offset position and gain in torsional rigidity without affecting the weight.

Patented “mEasy” system

Race-type trims The dynamic styling is also reflected in the interior, which is entirely black and features a number of RS3 logos. Faurecia adds to the outstanding level of perceived quality by supplying a number of aspects of interior trim such as the new inlays on the door-panels, the instrument panel and the center console in carbon-fiber look aluminum (Race Karbon-Optik) which further enhances the exclusive, sporty feel inside.
