The society in which you grow up determines by and large how you perceive excellence and the goal of getting the very best out of your life. Some cultures might attribute excellence to a few brilliant, hard-working, exceptional cases. Other cultures, such value modesty and urge people to try to be “average”. Excellence, however, is for all of us. Excellence is about getting the most out of our talents. Excellence is about trying to make a little dent in the world, so that when we move on, we will have left behind a better place for those who follow. You might think that striving for excellence means perfectionism. Perfectionism is the opposite of excellence. While perfectionism is about spending 95% of your time on the final 5% improvement in

a project, excellence is all about identifying how you can reach 80% of your outcome in 20% of your time. Perfectionism is about shielding yourself for the fear of failure, it is about uncertainty and doubt. Excellence is about knowing yourself and your strengths, taking pride in yourself and showing your talents in broad daylight to make this world a better place. Being average might feel comfortable, but you have more possibilities within your reach. Once you learn to foster your talents, and leverage others along the way, you will be that person in your community and workplace who inspires other to dare to embrace life. Your talents and your strengths, and, ultimately, yourself are your greatest assets.

RENT BASED ON 30% OF YOUR INCOME

NATURALLY SPEAKING By Jerry Davis Homeowners, who stack firewood in their basements to dry, are used to seeing dime-sized spots of whitish powder that has fallen from the wood during the drying phase. This Talcum-like powder is proof that some type of powderpost beetle has been eating away at the wood cell walls. Frass then fell onto lower pieces of firewood. It is unlikely these insects will ever complete another life cycle or that they will infest the home’s construction wood. The small mounds of dust are more of a nuisance than a concern. As the wood continues to dry, conditions inside the firewood are less and less favorable to the lives of these insects. Whether the powder shows up or not has more to do with the condition (dry or wet) of the wood that was brought into the basement. Most of the powder fell out a short time after the wood was stored in the home.

What’s Happening Mark Your Calendars and Join the Fun, Help Benefit Library Expansion

by Kate McKinney With just a year to go before we break ground on the Barneveld Public Library expansion, we are gearing up for an exciting 2014 as fundraising continues. Since the beginning of fundraising in 2013 we’ve raised an impressive total of $665,000 in donations and pledges. With three up-coming events just around the corner, some might say the best is yet to come. To kick off spring, the Barneveld Library Board will be hosting an Art Auction at picturesque Botham Vineyards and Winery on March 30. With great, local art to see and wines to taste, your senses are sure to be inspired. Musical entertainment and kids activities may also be in the works, so stay tuned for updates. On May 18th, we’ll revive the tradition of Tulip Festival. Five-hundred new tulips were already planted last fall, and our goal is to have Barneveld blooming more and more each year. After Barneveld’s community garage sales, Sunday will be the perfect time to stop by the library to enjoy concessions and musical entertainment. Support the library expansion by pre-ordering tulip bulbs to plant in your own yard and help bring the spirit of renewal to our community with spring color. Tulip bulbs will be delivered in time for planting in fall 2014. The culmination of many helping hands will be the Community Auction on July 26. This event will be co-hosted by the Advancement Association, Barneveld Library Board, and Friends of the Library. Donations of items from the community will be up for auction and all proceeds will benefit the library expansion. So check that basement, garage, or shed, and bring your items in. Watch for further details in the spring. Remember, the library expansion is not just about constructing a bigger building. It is also about expanding programs, collections, and offering new opportunities for our community. Mark your calendars and join the fun; support your local library! Questions regarding upcoming events? Please contact Director Carrie Portz, or check out our website and Facebook page.

GARDENING TIP: Heating and cooling degree-days are used by meteorologists to measure accumulated temperatures. We often use them in the spring to guess when insect pests might make an appearance. During the winter, it is interesting to look at them as an indication of weather patterns. We can get bogged down in record highs and lows, but cumulative numbers can tell you a lot about the local climate. There are some positives to this frigid weather. Lots of our native plants really require the dormancy and rest that icy winter temperatures bring. And some insect and animal pest numbers level off when we experience a colder winter.

BARNEVELD BOOSTER CLUB COME OUT AND SUPPORT OUR YOUTH DURING THE WINTER SPORTS PROGRAMS!

It has been said before, but we love the snow. If you forgot to cover your new roses or perennials, don’t worry. If you failed to apply some hay cover to those bulbs that were planted Thanksgiving weekend, no harm done. Keep your senses tuned though. When our January thaw finally makes an appearance in February and melts much of the snow cover, you may need to spread a bit of protective mulch. On the next nice day, take a walk around your neighborhood and check what is looking good. Landscapes that rely solely on perennials and flowering shrubs can look a bit forlorn in the winter. Find out what shrubs and trees your friends are using to add winter interest to their gardens. We also like to look through the new gardening books and magazines at this time of year. They are chock full of information about new introductions, ideas for interesting combinations and inspiring photographs of beautiful gardens. While you may not be up for the installation of a big water feature or a backyard pizza oven, how about a container pond or a fire pit? This is also an excellent time to take an inventory of your gardening tools. Your hardware store can sharpen mower blades and shovels and you can clean your trowels and pruning shears. Keep your trowels in a bucket of sand mixed with a bit of machine oil. Every time you put them away, they are cleaned and sharpened. Sharp tools will make gardening chores less chore-like. If you are applying salt to your driveway and sidewalks, please monitor any damage to your landscape. Replace sensitive plants with more tolerant species in areas where application tends to be heavy.

SUCCESSFUL BUSINESSES ARE USUALLY CONSISTENT AND AGGRESSIVE ADVERTISERS.

A common excuse from small business owners is “The BIG businesses can afford to advertise, but we’re just a small company. Sure, some of these big businesses started out with large investment capital, but consider this perspective—Perhaps they were small, gained momentum, and continued to grow because they understood the importance of and utilized their advertising. They out-advertised their competition in order to gain their position, and then have continued to advertise to maintain that position.

Public school open enrollment application period begins Feb. 3 MADISON — Wisconsin’s public school open enrollment application period runs from Feb. 3 to April 30 for the 2014-15 school year, allowing parents an opportunity to send their children to any public school district in the state. Traditionally, children in Wisconsin are assigned to public school districts based on the location of their parents’ home. The open enrollment application period is the only tuition-free opportunity for most parents to apply for their children to attend a public school in a school district other than the one in which they live. “Wisconsin is among a number of states nationwide that offer public school open enrollment across school districts. The state’s long-running program supports parental involvement and shared responsibility for educating children,” said State

Superintendent Tony Evers. The state’s open enrollment program is an inter-district choice program that began in the 1998-99 school year. During the first years of the program, the application window was three weeks. With legislation adopted for the 2012-13 school year, the application window expanded to three months. According to the Education Commission of the States, Wisconsin is among 21 states with inter-district open enrollment. Under the full-time public school open enrollment program, parents must apply during the three-month application period to the school district they wish their children to attend. Online application is encouraged. Application deadlines are firm. Early and late applications are not accepted. Districts will notify parents by June 6 whether their open enrollment applications have been approved or denied. Under the current open enrollment law, transportation, in most circumstances, is the responsibility of the parent. However, some school districts may provide partial transportation. Parents with questions should call the nonresident school district office to find out if any transportation will be provided. Reimbursement of a portion of transportation costs is available for families whose children are eligible for free or reduced-price school meals based

open enrollment application window – page 2 on federal income guidelines.

(more) The Department of Public Instruction provides the following guidance for parents who wish to apply for

open enrollment. •

Parents are urged to apply online directly from the open enrollment website http://sms.dpi.wi.gov/sms_psctoc. The online application will be available from midnight Feb. 3 until 4 p.m. on April 30.

Paper applications can be obtained from the DPI or any public school district. Paper application forms must be received by the nonresident school district no earlier than Feb. 3 and no later than 4 p.m. on April 30. A postmark for paper forms will not meet the requirement.

Parents may submit applications to up to three nonresident school districts for each child during the open enrollment application period.

Forms must be filled out completely and accurately. Contact the local school district office or the DPI if assistance is needed in completing the application.

Parents may request enrollment in a specific school or program in the nonresident school district; however, enrollment in the requested school or program is subject to space and other limitations and is not guaranteed.

Most students who attended a nonresident school district under open enrollment last year are not required to reapply for the 2014-15 school year. However, if the student will be entering middle school, junior high school, or high school in the 2014-15 school year, parents should call the nonresident school district to find out if reapplication will be required.

Parents may apply for their children to attend 4-year-old kindergarten under open enrollment only if the resident school district also offers a 4-year-old kindergarten program for which the child is eligible.

To assist parents in submitting open enrollment applications, a directory of public school districts is available on the DPI website at http://dpi.wi.gov/directories. More information is available from local school districts or from an open enrollment consultant at DPI, (888) 245-2732 (toll-free), or [email protected]. ###

New Turkey Equipment by Jerry Davis Arrival in the mail of spring turkey permit information; sounds of a lone gobble at first light; and new products on sports shops’ shelves are all reminders that a long, cold winter can be the learning season. It seems turkey hunting gear companies never fail to redesign a call, sew another seam in a face mask, or cut an extra window in a hunting blind. These alterations are just enough sell a hunter--who already has more than he or she needs--one more item to stuff into a hunting vest. Most turkey hunters are part entertainers, musicians or actors, it seems. To hear them talk of playing a call, singing a tune, or touching the heart of a lonely gobbler confirms they are one step from picking up a guitar to go on tour. That tour will begin soon enough. The first hunting period opens April 16. But before that time there is that tempting shelf of hunting gear. The hint that a redesigned call might be just enough to play kindly to a persnickety gobbler is enough to coax a credit card or $20 bill (the cost) onto a shop counter.

Not to be outdone on the idea of making ordinary seem old fashioned, Quaker Boy Game Calls of New York mounted its slate call in a lopsided holder and gave it a new name: Full Tilt Slate. The name rings of sounds of souped-up vehicles, which have more roar than power. But in turkey hunting, roar can be a good thing. And so can a purr. There is much more to this redesign than a name. The package talks to the hunter’s deep desire to be more than a person in camouflage by hinting at the call’s VDP technology. Variable depth pot doesn’t sound quite as exciting as its acronym, VDP, but either way the hunter is probably hooked. The working surface of the slate call is mounted at an angle so one edge of the pot is 7/8-inch tall, while the other edge is a mere 3/8-inch. Quaker Boy goes on to tell us that the custom design provides a variable sound chamber. Being deep on one end (7/8-inch), shallow (3/8inch) on the other end, allows for the creations of a variety of tones and volumes. Now we’re talking really music

to the ears of gobblers. “Create your own soft, subtle calls on the shallow end, shifting to the deeper end to gain volume and rasp,” QB writes. And, Full Tilt has no dead zone so that the striker (sort of a violin’s bow) will always touch the slate surface and make sound. Now that the hunter has worked up a frenzy far greater than any adult gobbler ever can, GB adds one last note to close the deal. Maybe even enough that the hunter will buy an extra call for a close friend. “Run (play or operate) the wildwood ash striker anywhere on the Full Tilt surface and an authentic wild turkey tone will result,” we’re told. Not just any species of wood striker, mind you, and not just any ash wood but wildwood ash. Hunters, just picture that wily, twisted ash tree growing where only wild turkeys have stepped. This tree is likely felled in the dark of night, and turned on a lathe at just the right speed to produce what we’re told is a wildwood ash striker. Y’all come and get one now; y’hear!

BIRD TIP:

Extreme cold will really increase bird activity at your backyard feeders. Birds need the extra calories to stay warm, so don't let feeders become too low. Offering quality seed, nuts, and suet can supply birds with an excellent source of calories they need for cold weather. If you have a problem with starlings and crows decimating suet in wire feeders, you might want to try an upside down suet feeder. These types of feeders make it awkward for large birds. Clinging birds, such as woodpeckers and chickadees, have no problem feeding upside down.
