CORNER

To My Fellow Students Time is flying fast, and by now, we have passed all the major conferences of the Society for 2010. Thank you for taking part in these, and hope to see you around in 2011 as well. We are looking forward to an exciting new year. In addition to the various activities running, we are opening toward new challenges, such as the Student Reviewing Program. Our aim is to provide for students the services that make a difference, so if you have an idea of how we can do better, please let us know. To support our mentoring program, the Fostering Interaction Between Robotists and Students (FIBRS), we are publishing some guidelines for session chair aspirants; hope you will take your chance to get involved. There is always place for new enthusiastic people, and the board of the Student Activities Committee (SAC) is renewing every year, so you have the possibility to build your career within the IEEE Robotics and Automation Society (RAS) as well. We are looking forward to more activity in the continuously renewing programs, such as the student photo contest, the student reporting program, the FIRBS, code head, and logo design competition (learn more about these in the March 2011 issues). We try to extend the scope of the activities, please consider getting involved. For the latest news on the RAS SAC, follow our monthly newsletter (hands up those who have not noticed yet they receive a RAS SAC newsletter regularly!) or login to the SAC Web site (http:// wiki.ieee-ras.org/mab/sac). In this issue, SAC Cochair Alejandro Perez, IEEE International Conference on Robotics and Automation (ICRA) 2010 Program Chair Professor Vijay Kumar, and I present guidelines for chairing a conference session. Hope to hear from you soon. Tamas Haidegger [email protected]

Fostering Interaction Between Robotists and Students (FIBRS) Student/Chair Mentorship Program At ICRA 2011, students can get involved in a fun way again. Get the behind the scenes experience of a conference. This program will give you a chance to interact with key researchers in your field. Students will be paired with a session chair, where you will learn how to run a session. Students who are interested should first find out who they would like to work with, by reading the session guide and selecting a chair that they would like to be their mentor. Please e-mail the name of the session, the date, and your relevant contact information to [email protected]. Keep in mind that people are occasionally very busy, so you may also wish to provide an alternative mentor’s name. Student Photo Contest You are welcome to submit your photographs taken during any professional events. This is a seasonal amateur photography competition, which is open to undergraduate and graduate Student Members. The judging of the submitted photographs will be made by the IEEE RAS SAC, involving independent judges. Three winners will be announced and awarded after the conference. The submitted photos will be used for archival purposes.

DECEMBER 2010

Student Reporters Program The chance is given to you to become famous with your writing skills: we are calling for entertaining, yet professionally relevant reports on different workshops and conferences. You can register yourself to a session via the SAC Web site (http:// wiki.ieee-ras.org/mab/sac). The best reports will be awarded and published in IEEE Robotics and Automation Magazine’s upcoming issue. Write out your impressions. RAS SAC and Technical Committee Logo Design Competition We are looking for talented RAS students to help designing a logo for the Student Activity Committee to extend visual presence. The logo should harmonize with the current RAS 2-D logo (http://www.ieee-ras.org/images/ logo.jpg), as it is supposed to be used together. Submissions are accepted via e-mail [email protected]. All lossless image formats are accepted (e.g., png), with a minimal resolution of 300 dpi. Vector format is encouraged. Best submissions will be circulated for voting, and the top three will be awarded. In addition, we are also looking for logos for all the Technical Committees (TCs) (http://tab.ieee-ras.org/). Send a simplified B&W logo design for each of the 26 TCs. They should fit into a squared grid. Submission details are the same as above. IEEE Robotics & Automation Magazine 105
