Forensic science is typically referred to as forensics and is the practical application of numerous sciences to solve legal system-related questions, which can include either a civil or criminal action or suit. The word forensic comes from Latin forensis meaning “before the forum” and refers to something used in a court of law. Currently, forensics refers to a method of obtaining physical evidence to use in a court of law. The forensic science technician is responsible for processing evidence at crime scenes and for using the proper techniques to identify, collect and preserve physical evidence to support law enforcement activities. A full-time student may complete this 60-61 credit-hour program in two years. Part-time options for completion are offered, as well. Classes are offered during the fall, spring and summer semesters.

Did You Know? Each person has a unique DNA fingerprint. Unlike a conventional fingerprint that occurs only on the fingertips and can be altered by surgery, a DNA fingerprint is the same for every cell, tissue and organ of a person. It cannot be altered by any known treatment. Consequently, DNA fingerprinting is rapidly becoming the primary method for identifying and distinguishing individual human beings.
