Message from the Chair Health services in Victoria continue to face significant challenges, providing health care to increasing numbers of people within very tight operational budgets. This is particularly true at Northern Health where the surge in demand for health services is driven by our rapidly expanding local population - which estimates predict will continue to grow. During the 2011-12 financial year, increased demand was evident in many areas of our service, including Maternity where an extra 342 babies were born, bringing the total for the year to 2,352; and also our Emergency Department which remains one of the busiest in the state, treating 66,228 patients. The Northern Health Foundation plays an important role supporting the work of our Health Service, by raising vital funds for the purchase of medical equipment, education, capital works, training and research. Without the support of our donors, the work of the Foundation would simply not be possible, and I’d like to acknowledge the generous gifts made in the 2011-12 financial year which enabled us to make the following acquisitions: $220,000 OCT Imaging System $50,8782 2 x Triad Diathermy Machines $46,500 Ultrasound Biometer Package $35,448 Abdominal Retractor $52,500 Research Catheters $9,174 Patient Lifter and Day Chairs for the Ian Brand Nursing Home $23,000 Special Care Nursery Incubator $9,421 Miele Thermal Disinfectant Washer

In line with the increased demand for our health services, the Foundation’s fundraising target is also higher for 2012-13, as we aim to raise more than $1.7 million for Northern Health. We hope that you will again show your support as we continue our work of building a healthier northern community.

The Les & Muriel Batten Foundation helping to protect tiny lives The Northern Hospital’s newly expanded Special Care Nursery received a very welcome boost recently from one of Northern Health’s longest and most committed supporters, The Les & Muriel Batten Foundation. The Batten family, who once owned the land where the Northern Hospital is now located, continue to maintain very strong ties to the northern community and have been extremely generous supporters, funding several projects over the past 10 years. The Batten Society, a special group of long-term supporters whose members have chosen to leave a bequest to Northern Health, is also named in their honour. Les and Muriel were long time residents of Epping and lived on High Street for more than 50 years. Bruce Batten, the nephew of Les and Muriel said the family used to graze cattle on the land where Epping Plaza and The Northern Hospital now stand. ‘The whole area was covered in artichokes and we used to flush out the calves by riding our horses through the thistles where they were hiding,’ Bruce says. ‘Uncle Les had a very strong affection for children and was very clear in his instructions that the money from his estate should go towards helping and supporting young children in the community.’

The Les & Muriel Batten Foundation’s most recent gift of $124,050 will help us purchase five Infant Isolette 8000 Incubators for the Special Care Nursery that will protect and potentially save the lives of newborns requiring additional assistance after birth.

Degani Bakery Café The state of the art café, located at both The Northern Hospital and Broadmeadows Health Service, offers many delicious and healthy options for staff and patients, along with a wide array of snacks and refreshments to appeal to even the fussiest of eaters. Not only have they been filling our tummies with delicious fare and steaming cups of coffee to get us through those early morning meetings, but they have also been donating generous funds to assist The Northern Health Foundation in providing equipment and services to a Northern Health patients. Over the past twelve months, Degani have donated an astonishing $15,000 to the Foundation to help purchase life saving medical equipment across Northern Health campuses.

We thank Degani for their generous contribution and assistance in helping us to create a healthier northern community.

Building a better tomorrow The Northern Health Foundation and Places Victoria have proudly launched the 2013 House and Land Charity Campaign which aims to raise $400,000 for Northern Health’s Teaching, Training and Research Precinct through the construction and auction of a new family home on the corner of Harvest Home Road and Efficient Street, Epping.

Places Victoria and Northern Health have successfully auctioned four house and land packages since 2001, raising an exceptional $1.5 million which has been used to purchase life saving medical equipment. The launch of the campaign on July 26 at the Places Victoria office was designed to raise awareness of the campaign and attract the support of a community-minded builder who will partner with us for the construction. The event included appearances by Melbourne Victory footballers and featured Tim Campbell as MC.

Annual dinner Held at the Plenty Ranges Arts and Convention Centre on July 21, this year’s Annual Fundraising Dinner and Auction was a big success, raising $130,000 to purchase equipment for Northern Health’s expanding Cardiology Department.

VISUALISATION - ENTRY The 400 guests enjoyed a three course dinner and drinks, entertainment and live music, while helping to raise funds with an auction, silent auction and raffle which included MCG Football tickets, artwork and homeware prizes.

Supporting the expansion of our Emergency Department An important role of the Northern Health Foundation is fostering strategic partnerships with new supporters, organisations and groups. Over the past twelve months the Foundation has worked closely with Freemasons Victoria to establish a strategic partnership, which has involved presentations by Northern Health CEO, Greg Pullen and a tour of The Northern Hospital’s facilities. The Freemasons Charitable Foundation has now generously contributed $12,000 towards the purchase of medical equipment that has the potential to save lives in our Emergency Department, which is currently undergoing vital expansions that will see it View of front grow from 38 to 60 cubicles to meet demand.

NORTHERN ACADEMIC & RESEARCH PRECINCT

The increased demand for Northern Health’s services spans the age spectrum of newborn babies right through to older residents who need day-to-day care. The Foundation has been grateful to receive strong support from a range of new donors this year, including the Lord Mayor’s Charitable Foundation which has granted $10,000 towards the purchase of lifesaving medical equipment at The Northern Hospital’s recently expanded Special Care Nursery. The Foundation also successfully applied for and received a $15,000 grant towards the installation of a ceiling hoist at

the Ian Brand Nursing Home from the Ian Rollo Currie Estate. The lifting device will assist patients with a number of complex medical conditions and limited mobility, enabling them to be transferred safely; and will lower the risk of staff injuries due to lifting. Both of these grants were helped by personal introductions by our existing supporters, Mr Paul Wheelton, OAM and Northern Health Foundation Board member, Mr Trevor Gorman to whom we are extremely grateful.

Making it personal Jason Brook

Our remarkable staff at Northern Health regularly go above and beyond the call of duty to help our patients – none more so than Jason Brook who has worked as a Patient Services Attendant in the Children and Adolescent Health Unit (CAHU) for the past 14 years.

Determined to make a difference in some small way, Jason decided to hold a fundraiser for the children’s families, inviting people to sponsor him to shave his head and chop off his long locks which hadn’t been cut for more than three years.

Jason has seen hundreds of children enter the ward during that time, but his heart was particularly touched recently by a very sick three year old boy, and 10 year old girl, who were both receiving palliative care. During the time that these little children were in the hospital, Jason became close with their families, “I have a little girl myself, and I can’t imagine what these families are going through,” he says. “I developed a great rapport and bond with these kids and their families and I wanted to do something for them in this difficult time.”

Jason raised $7,100 which has been distributed to the two families. “I’m hoping these families can use this money to take a trip, or buy something that they want or need,” Jason says. To support Northern Health’s important work please donate today by using the donation slip on the back of this newsletter. All donations over $2 are tax deductible.

Driving forward with Honda The Northern Health Foundation was thrilled to secure a new partnership with the Honda Foundation who will generously donate a Honda Odyssey people mover that will help us comfortably transport patients who need assistance when attending appointments. The brand new vehicle will be available for a three year period and will be fully maintained and serviced, courtesy of the North Way Honda dealership in Plenty Road, Bundoora. The loan vehicle will be an enormous help in our day-to-day

work, assisting with our volunteer transport program and the transportation of Indigenous patients, many of whom require transport assistance in order to attend appointments and receive treatment at our health service centres for conditions such as diabetes, renal disease, cardiac disease, cancer and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease – all of which require considerable health care. Thank you Honda for helping us improve the health of the members of our community.
