FRAMING AN INTRODUCTORY COURSE ON TRADITIONAL/INDIGENOUS KNOWLEDGE, IIT DELHI Workshop sponsored by CDC, IIT Delhi Convenor : Dr Amrit Srinivasan, Department of Humanities & Social Sciences, IITD Date : Friday, May 12, 2006 Venue : IRD Conference Room (VIIIth Floor, Main Academic Building) IIT Delhi, Hauz Khas, New Delhi - 16

The Workshop seeks to redress the relative neglect faced by Traditional Knowledge (TK) on the cognitive plane, by urging its examination in universities, corporations and government research labs. TK, also known as Indigenous or Local Knowledge, has already been recognized for its unique contribution to our scientific, technical ‘heritage’. Under pressure of sustainability and equity demands worldwide, development and knowledge interests are beginning to coincide. But without a reciprocal dialogue between the two, TK’s formal, cultural identity is losing out to standard IPR protocols. This is not to India’s advantage in the long run. In the new knowledge environment we need to analyze and disseminate TK, keeping pace with the latest developments in cutting-edge S&T itself. The Workshop will take a step down this road by brain storming about an Introductory Course at IIT Delhi, examining TK’s:1.

structure, content and resource materials.

2.

pedagogy, based on its distinctive grammar and epistemology

3.

social context or "applications" - preferably water, agriculture, health and artisan practices

4.

data-bases and cross-referencing aids - maps, indices, visuals - reflecting the people’s knowledge universe

5.

social vision for a largely S&T student audience

The programme for a 1-day Workshop is given overleaf.
