Try feed storage tips KENTUCKY Beef Expo for better beef quality

UST as our grandmothers told us “you are what you eat,” our cattle are what we feed them. The quality of that feed, in part, is determined by how it’s stored. Frank Owsley, Auburn University Extension animal scientist, offers six tips for proper feed storage. 1. Check feedstuffs for color, temperature, odor, moisture and foreign matter. 2. Maintain quality by proper storage techniques to keep moisture, rodents and birds away from feed supply. 3. Be especially careful to use clean, residue-free containers to store feed. 4. Apply all pesticides carefully and judiciously to any feed produced to avoid possible pesticide contamination. 5. Use medicated feeds with care, because most have withdrawal times that must be followed before slaughter of the animal is allowed. 6. Always consult a qualified nutritionist if you have questions about the use of various feed ingredients or compounds.
