THE FALL OF MAN & THE CONSEQUENCES OF SIN GENESIS CHAPTER THREE Key Verse

I.

“Wherefore, as by one man sin entered into the world, and death by sin; and so death passed upon all men, for that all have sinned:” Romans 5:12

A Satanic Attack (vs. 1-5) A. This was not just a serpent, but was Satanic Revelation 12:9; 20:2; II Corinthians 11:3; John 8:44 B. Satan’s tactics in the temptation of Eve, gives us a glimpse of his attack strategy today. 1. Satan causes doubts about God’s Word (v. 1) “Yea, hath God said” Satan puts a question mark where God puts a period. (Genesis 2:17) He caused her to doubt God’s Word. 2. Satan majors on what a child of God cannot do or have, while ignoring what the child of God can do and have. Compare Genesis 2:16 to Genesis 3:1 Genesis 2:16, 17

Genesis 3:1

“Of every tree…thou mayest freely eat”

“Ye shall not eat of every tree of the garden?”

3. Satan denies God’s Word. (v. 4) “Ye shall not surely die” 4. Satan tries to get man to distrust God motives. (v. 5) C. Eve makes Mistakes or Misquotes God’s Word 1. She adds to God’s Word (v. 3) “neither shall ye touch it”

1

Notes

Notes 2. She subtracts from God’s Word (v. 2) “we may eat” with the word “freely” left out. 3. She dilutes God’s Word (v. 3) “lest ye die” instead of “surely” die. NOTE: Read God’s warning for those that add to or take away from his Word. (Revelation 22:18, 19)

II. A Sinful Action (v. 6) A. There is revealed a threefold temptation. NOTE: This threefold temptation is named in I John 2:16 1. Lust of the Eyes-(v. 6) “saw” “pleasant to the eyes” 2. Lust of the Flesh (v. 6) “Good for food” 3. Pride of Life (v. 6) “ desired to make one wise” Same old story (See Joshua 7:21-Achan; II Sam. 11:24David) B. Eve was deceived by the devil and ate the fruit, and then gave it to Adam who partook of the fruit willingly. 2Co 11:3, “But I fear, lest by any means, as the serpent beguiled Eve through his subtilty, so your minds should be corrupted from the simplicity that is in Christ.” 1Ti 2:14, “And Adam was not deceived, but the woman being deceived was in the transgression.” III. A Shameful Attempt (vs. 7-19) A. To Cover up their Sin (v. 7) 1. They tried to cover up their nakedness which was gave them the realization of their sinfulness, because before sin entered 2

Notes both Adam and Eve were naked and were not ashamed. Genesis 2:25) 2. This was an attempt to sooth their conscience with self righteousness, but the fig leaves were insufficient. 3. So it is with man and religion today! Man tries to sooth his conscience by being religious, but all too well do they know that this is insufficient.

B. To Hid from their God (v. 8-10)

Even after Adam and Eve tried to cover their nakedness with fig leaves, they still considered themselves naked (vs. 7, 10). What does God consider nakedness? The answer is found in Exodus 28:42. God considers someone naked who reveal any part of their thigh. This is the area above the knee.

C. To Excuse their Actions (vs. 11-19) 1. The old blame game and the passing of the buck originated with Adam and Eve. a. Adam blamed God and Eve (v. 12) “the woman thou gavest” b. Eve blamed the Serpent (v. 13) “The serpent beguiled me” 2. Even though they tried to pass the blame and even use the old adage “the devil made me do it”, God still judged them for their sin. (vs. 14-19) a. Judgment upon the Serpent (vs. 14, 15) 3

Notes 1) The serpent was once called a beast of the field and cattle. (Genesis 3:1; 14) 2) Now the serpent was cursed above all the beasts of the field. It seems that the serpent in only now able to go upon its belly. 3) After the serpent was cursed, both prophesy was given and judgment was passed upon the true serpent (Satan) who is believed to have possessed the serpent. His head will be crushed by the seed of a woman. b. Judgment upon the Woman (v. 16) 1) She will suffer in Childbirth NOTE: Pain and sorrow are the result of the curse. It seems that before the fall, bearing children would have been easy and pleasant. 2) Her desire will be to her husband 3) She will be in subjection to her husband. c. Judgment upon the Man (labor, sweat, death) (vs. 17-19) 1) The ground is cursed because of Adams sin. It brings forth thorns and thistles. Ro 8:22 “For we know that the whole creation groaneth and travaileth in pain together until now.” 2) Man will now have to provide for his family. No longer will God provide the garden. 3) Man will have to work hard by the sweat of his brow to provide for his family. 4) He will die physically and return to dust.

Notes IV. A Substitute Acquired (vs. 20, 21) A. Before God pronounced judgment upon Adam, He promised redemption. (Genesis 3:15) B. The result of the bruising of the heel of the seed of the woman will result in the bruising of the serpents head. C. This is a promise which tells us that even though sin and Satan will cause Jesus to be crucified, His death will deliver a fatal blow to Satan. The bruising of the seed of the woman will defeat Satan and sin. A bruised heel is not a fatal wound. The Saviour really died, but rose again after thee days and three nights. D. Now the Lord was giving them a picture of that promise. 1. God alone provides the covering for man’s sin. 2. For man’s sin to be forgiven the innocent was to die for the guilty. Ro 5:6 For when we were yet without strength, in due time Christ died for the ungodly. Ro 5:8 But God commendeth his love toward us, in that, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us. 1Co 15:3 For I delivered unto you first of all that which I also received, how that Christ died for our sins according to the scriptures; 3. Man was to receive this covering not meriting it. It was totally of God’s grace. Eph 2:8 For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God:

V. A Shocking Altercation (vs. 22-24)

5

Notes A. Man was sent forth first, but it seems that man was reluctant to leave the garden, so the Lord had to “drive” them out. (v.23, 24) B. Then the Lord place Cherubim at the entrance of the garden to restrain man from entering into it again. NOTE: Ever since the garden of Eden, man has tried to re-enter paradise, but to no avail. The only way to enter into paradise and partake of the tree is through Christ. Re 2:7 He that hath an ear, let him hear what the Spirit saith unto the churches; To him that overcometh will I give to eat of the tree of life, which is in the midst of the paradise of God. 1Jo 5:4, 5, “For whatsoever is born of God overcometh the world: and this is the victory that overcometh the world, even our faith. Who is he that overcometh the world, but he that believeth that Jesus is the Son of God?”
